Remember how there was all that controversy in the fall of '06, back when Facebook first implemented the news feed? Now I can barely imagine having to actually manually go to a friend's profile to see what he's been up to.

Wasn't the outrage more about the News feed telling people what you've been doing off of Facebook?

I wouldn't want "James has bought Japanese Schoolgirls Get Raped at Amazon.com" to show up on my friends' feeds.

No, this was a separate problem called Facebook Beacon which they've pretty much neutered into no longer really existing.

The News Feed thing was a huge blowup, and it was hilarious because nothing had changed. They made the site easier to use and had everything show up in one place, and people shit bricks.

Then last year when they added tabs for the four sections of any typical profile, people shit bricks again even though you still only really had to use the News Feed or Wall to see what was going on. I still remember the epic arguments on GAF over that and people leaving the service, or even better, threatening to leave Facebook by posting it on GAF, like anyone here gives a shit or Facebook people read GAF.

fresh from techcrunch:

Facebook’s blog post on the update notes that the new homepage will be deployed over the coming days, so it may still be awhile before you can try it out for yourself.

Yeah, that was great. I believe the argument amounted to people complaining that it catered too much to Facebook stalkers. "I just posted this freely available information, but I don't want it being advertised that I did it! I want people to have to look for it, otherwise it's just too easy for other people to do exactly what this site was set up to do! They should have to work for it!"

Mine just updated :D

Yeah, mine neither. I'm on the east coast.

Interesting they've changed "What are you doing at the moment?" to "What's on your mind?" however this does mean that the news feed will be full of "Mark is thinking bout tits"

Facebook rolls their updates out across their networks over time. Mine's changed over, but I'm on a University network. Those are the oldest ones so they probably switch first.

Is the new feed totally live, as in auto-refreshing? Maybe it's just because it's still early in the day, but I don't see new posts popping up on mine.

Also, they dropped your name from the start of all status updates. The publisher now just reads "What's on your mind?" and has a blank text box. You're not forced to write in the 3rd person anymore, hurray! The posts still show up with your name in front of them, but it's a different size, font, and color so it doesn't really look like part of the sentence. I guess Zuckerberg is trying to out-Twitter Twitter.

I'm on a university network (work). It didn't update this morning and the site has been inaccessible for the past couple hours.

Mine's still the old version damnit. I actually really like the new layout design-wise, and am looking forward to it. Plus they have been totally cock-teasing this thing for like 2 weeks now!

but that already happened without the update!

I got the update. It's really not a whole lot different — people complaining about it are just ridiculous. It'll take a short while to get used to it, but it'll definitely be an improvement in the long run, like most of the other changes they've made to the site.

I annoyed a bunch of people on my Facebook friends list by changing my status to "Jeff can't wait for people to start bitching about a slight change to the homepage, even if it's better, because they are big fucking idiots." One person deleted me. :lol

Mine isn't yet. :( What's taking so long? This isn't software, it's files on a server. They don't just replace all the files at once and it affects everyone? Or are they selectively activating it for certain people? What's the point? I actually WANT it and I don't even have it yet. :/

The posted a video yesterday explaining the philosophy behind the new changes:

Not everyone's is being updated at the same time. My friend had it like 15 minutes before I got it. It's doesn't seem too different, just more organized and everything seems bigger. Once I use it more I'll probably see the more subtle differences.

mine still hasn't changed. i'm sad. i want this. i need this. i feel like my whole life has been leading up to this point.

It's like the same thing as before except the News Feed doesn't bug out and show shit from weeks ago anymore, and the right side actually has stuff in it now.

I'm not surprised at all to see teenage girls crying about it in the Facebook blog comments.

Its not a huge change. I don't really like it, but whatever. What really annoys me is how the wall posts are like now. There isn't a big enough space between the person's name and what they say.

I don't like this too much. It's really busy looking and even for friends I care about, seeing everything they just did back to back isn't too cool. I'd rather see what a bunch of people are doing when I logged on then see two people's history of a bunch of shit.

That's pretty fucking stupid of you to say imo.

I don't like it. The text + profile pics are too large, and there's no way to control the length of your things on your Wall anymore.

No no, it's correct. Because it's not a big change at all in the first place and people just freak out over change.

I don't like the feed being in real time instead of being random. I feel now my feed will be dominated by people who update their profiles constantly. Before, it was more even. Unless there is a way to control that?

Seems like they're encouraging people to make friend groups :\

There is an X on the right side of their posts.
