I'm a little scared to click on that... is it gonna hide them forever?
Yes, but it brings up a dialog that makes it easy to turn people on and off.

Also, you're right that they want you to use friend groups. I really don't know why anyone would want the old way where you just saw random crap and potentially didn't see meaningful updates. With the new way, you see everything, and you can just put people that obnoxiously update all the time in another list so you'll only see that crap when you want to.

I wouldn't mind that so much if it weren't such a pain to organize your groups. There's no quick way to see which group a person does or doesn't belong to.

I agree with this. I'm also not a fan of the "More" and "See More" expanders on the left and right side not remembering whether you like things open or closed.

They should be bookmarkable like applications. There's so few things on the left hand side, there's no reason to have those list collapse like that.

The Highlights section also pushes the People You May Know section down too far.

Oh well, I only add people if they add me anyway :lol

Yup getting the complainers now. My one friend said it's too confusing to use. It's not even that different, everything just moved around a little, not as much clutter.

No, this was a separate problem called Facebook Beacon which they've pretty much neutered into no longer really existing.

The News Feed thing was a huge blowup, and it was hilarious because nothing had changed. They made the site easier to use and had everything show up in one place, and people shit bricks.

Then last year when they added tabs for the four sections of any typical profile, people shit bricks again even though you still only really had to use the News Feed or Wall to see what was going on. I still remember the epic arguments on GAF over that and people leaving the service, or even better, threatening to leave Facebook by posting it on GAF, like anyone here gives a shit or Facebook people read GAF.

Hilariously stupid isn't it? People complaining about privacy, when they are the ones posting all this personal stuff for everyone to see in the first place. I've seen people say " I don't want everyone up in my business," with the obvious being to not fucking post your business on the internet. The irrational reactions many had can probably be attributed to people wanting to be attention whores to a level that they find personally acceptable, while simultaneously retaining a false sense of privacy in their own "corners" of the website, assuming that hardly-known "Friends" won't regularly look into what they've been up to. What the News Feed really did was show just how much stupid shit some of us put out there for anyone to see.

The anger over FB layout redesigns are just more stupidity. Similar to the idiots personally upset over redesigned Tropicana and Pepsi packaging.

pretty much my stance on anything people post themselves on the internet. I mean, what did you think was gonna happen? :lol

Mine's been updated today, and so far I think it's quite nice. Much cleaner than it used to be.

I only have two complaints so far:
1)It seems like friends' new friends don't appear in any of the news feeds anymore. (Unless I simply haven't found them?) I'm disappointed because I frequently found people I know through these notices.

2) This one's minor, but still nagging me: on the home page, they removed the bluish background on the sidebars (People you may know, highlights, etc.) but they failed to update the profiles to reflect this style change. It makes the site look inconsistent and I think the home page's style is better than the profile's.

Mine got updated today. Don't care for it at the moment but I'm sure I'll get used to it after a little bit. I'm never one of those people who join/create groups all about going back to the old Facebook. I still remember the massive uproar about the Feed. :lol

This totally isn't real-time at all.
I think that real-time isn't active unless those people are in the active group with the new homepage. Just a guess, though.

And I'm still waiting.......

I had my friend update his status and nothing happened on my homepage. He has the update. I had to refresh to see it. So it seems like this "real time streaming" is just BS

Or isn't ready because it JUST launched for only SOME of the service's users? Seriously, this is like jumping all over an alpha version or a demo for missing features. Til it's in everyone's hands, we can't judge for sure how it's gonna work.

Yeah, maybe by "real time," they just mean "it won't wait 3 days to tell you stuff."

Yeah, it doesn't mean you can sit there and watch your homepage auto-update whenever a friend does something. You still have to refresh.

No auto-update is complete failure. I'm glad I still have Digsby...

Whao, why is this the first im hearing of digsby, does it work well?

And I dont really care for this update, why cant I 'one line' stuff on my wall now? it seems they took the big, regular, and small options out for stuff that comes up on your feed.

I like it a lot. You get more info than you would looking off the normal feed (even before the update).

My only gripe is it doesn't seem to run as well on XP as on Vista. Then again, my XP laptop is a few years older...

I really hate that. I used it a lot for notes that were getting imported from LJ cause the default display eliminates all kinds of formatting (even line breaks).

Another thing I noticed was the font style hasn't been updated for all sections yet. Inconsistencies like that really drive me crazy.

Apart from my posts on secret event walls appearing on my wall too I'm not too fussed by this update. Probably a bug through the update. I just hid them again.

Yeah I don't like this shit.

The whole right side of my page is "ads" for Mafia Wars and all this other stupid crap my "friends" use but I don't.

Good idea on the grouping thing though. I'm going to go make my "Takes 20 flixster quizzes a day and other annoying asshats" group.

I would just unfriend these people, but then you'll end up popping up on their "people you know" list and 1) they'll know you ditched them and 2) they'll just request you again.

I definitely agree that the right section seems way too cluttered. I don't know how to filter the content there or just turn it off completely either.... anyone know how?

So they basically made is simpler... why? There was no need to change it, was fine... oh well... Like I miss the photos tab where you could see new albums, mobile uploads, and tagged photos. And on the main feed there was those tabs where you could choose status etc..

See there's really no such thing as "status" anymore though, its all one element now. Wall posts (as they were) and status are now the same thing, like twitter.

I actually liked how statuses worked before, where they were larger than the rest of your wall and stood out. Ah well

Yeah same here. Now my whole news feed is just the same two people bitching about the chages.

I don't need a twitter clone as I have no use for the real twitter. I used the status update for dumb/witty shit I'd change once a week, not everytime I fart.

There used to be a "Live Feed" that auto-updated anyway. The benefit of the old feeds was the one-line updates...these are gone from this update and it makes it harder to skim over what is in the feed.

Don't seem to get any updates about friends becoming friends with other people.

The rounded profile pictures is a pointless addition.

I'm not entirely sure what "hide" does or who it hides from whom. Haven't tried it because not sure how to reverse it.

The right column is packed full of ads and crap from people I speak to the least. No ability to "hide" the shit in that column.

In summary, the homepage still needs further tweaking because there are usability issues with it. In contrast, I think the profile page is a bit improved and I like the larger text but they definitely need to bring back the larger and bold status to differentiate between the various types of content on your wall.

-------------

It's nothing like twitter either.

Look at your options on the left side.

Finally got it. I find it neat that I can see how other people see my posts, like on other people's walls or Google Reader shared stuff. Much easier to filter out people completely. It's about as real time as Twitter, w/e. It's nice.

i actually am not hating it. i'm sure after time ill really grow to love it better than the old one. it took me a while to "get" the last update. i like the live feed.

Are you kidding? At its basic functionality it is now exactly like Twitter. Status posts, wall posts, wall comments, etc are now all merged into one element with no differentiation. Each person's profile is now the same as someones Twitter profile, where everything said by/about them is visible. Your profile is now essentially a glorified "filter".

The only difference is they replaced "@so and so" (in Twitter) with "sender > receiver". Cosmetically, yes its different and allows for much more than does Twitter. Functionally, however, it is nearly identical.

Because they were never different things.

Was it not before?

friends list creation really oughta be on the front page.
Definitely. This is the big one they're missing. I think adding this would make the filtering options on the front page more obvious to everyone and the more reasonable of the crybabies out there would actually understand what Facebook is trying to do and why it makes more sense.
