The home page is the Live Feed now, except it doesn't update in real time as you stay on the page which is no big loss.

Seriously, the filters are so awesome for this.

The problem is not so much that the live feed is the home page, but that the organization of it is totally different. Right now, everything is fragmented to the point that I can't easily see -- in chronological order -- of what is going on.

That and the real time issue. But FB hasn't been real time for the longest while with frequent cluster desyncs. I blame the heavy use of JS/AJAX/FB platform.

I don't like it too much, everything is so large that you barely see any updates. And how is "Live Feed" any different if it doesn't update without refreshing the page? Isn't that exactly how it worked before?

i think the size is the only thing that kind of bothers me

also you can no longer choose 'no picture' when you post a link, and that sort of annoys me, but i don't think i really care

I like it, aside from the right side of the screen. I don't care how many of my retard friends are playing Gang Wars or joined so and so shit group. Give me an "ignore this group" or thumbs down option in each of those boxes, plz.
Yeah, "highlights" is bugging me. Other than that I like it

I dig it. The only thing I hate is the ad-space on the right, it's ugly.
I wish I could hide certain objects forever. I don't care if my friends use Peeps. I don't care if they send them to another person. Especially when it tells me 5 times. It's an advertisement for an application I BLOCKED. I shouldn't even SEE it.

As for actual ads. FireFox + Stylish =
Code:
@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);

@-moz-document domain("facebook.com") {
  .emu_ad, .UIStandardFrame_SidebarAds, #home_sponsor {
    display: none !important;
  }
}

It worked before and works now. It hides actual ads by making them "disappear". Better than ad blockers that just don't load the ad, but keep a big hole in the page. For me, on the front page, it removes that top advertisement on the right side that usually gives you ads for importing from Gmail or that damn FreeCreditReport ad.

Ad-free FaceBook is great. Now, if only I could get rid of ads for applications I HAVE NO GODDAMNED INTEREST IN USING. *cough* Sorry, frog in my throat.

Someone's got to get through to the creators that some people don't want anything to do with all those stupid goofy apps that teenage girls and middle-aged housewives get all tingly for. Peeps? Furniture for my house? A new tree for my garden? Tattoos? Pieces of Flair? Fuck all that shit! Let me remove their existence from MY FaceBook if I want. Just let me hide them from ever EVER showing up on the feed or sidebar again. Unfortunately, apps like that don't seem to have their own ID's so when code is generated I can't get their class as unique to hide. Would be nice if a Peep story container had a class of "appID_100402" that I could just hide. Or maybe they do... I have to do some more... looking into it.

Oh lord, people are spamming the Facebook blog like spoiled children instead of using the feedback options on their Help page.
Seems like the biggest whiners are total fucking retards, if the current state of the blog is any indication.

I'm fine with most of the changes. I don't need to see who my friends make friends with on my home page, their need to extend their e-penis by befriending every person they've ever met is of no interest to me, and the rest is just new formatting. There's only two problems:

1) The formatting is not consistent. If you navigate off a profile, a public profile or the home page, "old" Facebook rears its head, and totally breaks visual consistency.

2) They took away options for how you want information displayed on your own profiles (which we were never informed of!) If I had an update that I felt was more important than the rest of the minutia on my profile, it gave me the option to alter it so it was in BIG BOLD LETTERS. But now everything has the exact same visual catch, which I don't really like. My current status says it best:

Another question:

I have it set up so that only a certain "Friend List" I've created can see "photos tagged of me", yet people who aren't on this list can still go through albums that I've put up. I can't seem to find a separate category to block them from looking through these as well. Am I missing something?

Yep: the point of Facebook. But rather than just be rude and glib, you'll want to set your album's privacy settings on a case-by-case basis, as they don't give an option to block ALL your albums for certain people. Photo albums are intended to be viewed by anyone you make friends with unless you specify otherwise album-by-album.

Not everyone wants all of their albums available to all of their friends, but thanks for answering my question.

Well they have the highlights off to the side. Though I don't think they said how they're picked. I'm assuming by some mixture of 'likes' and clicks.

Also, did they change the order of the 'like' and 'comment' links? I keep accidentally liking things since the update and I don't know why.

I'm not talking about the Home page. I mean MY PROFILE. The page I'm supposed to have control over. Nothing was ever mentioned that there would be changes to that, as well.

Yeah, I don't like how our own status updates on our profiles look exactly the same as everyone else's wall posts now. Terrible.

I also agree that removing our ability to customize the size/appearance of every post/item on our wall is annoying. Now, if someone tags me in a photo or mentions me in a note, I have to either delete it entirely or have it clutter up my wall. Boo.

I dont really like the update. I never complained about the other update, I thought it was quite good.

The new wall is a mess. Status updates look exactly like posts. You cant see the photos you've made comments on.

Same here, I really don't like it.

Well, let's be a little more constructive about it than just bitching on forums or the Facebook blog. Let's tell them what we like and what we don't, so they can actually work with that to make it better... or something.

http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=uex_feedback_home

Saying something to them about it using the form they set up specifically for this purpose makes more sense to me, and I get the feeling that this is a "work in progress" and they'll be willing to tweak based on user requests, so.... have at 'er.

My brother showed me last night how to get FaceBook to automatically update your profile when you perform actions on other sites like Flickr, Last.fm, YouTube, even your own Blog if it has an RSS feed. They hid the option in a special place on your Wall rather than putting an OBVIOUS LINK to it in, oh, I dunno, maybe the fucking SETTINGS menu? But I found it, and turned it on for all my feeds. Within an hour FaceBook had updated my status with the last songs I loved on Last.fm, the movies I uploaded to YouTube (Why spend time uploading to both YouTube and FaceBook when you can do one site?!), my photos on Flickr, as well as my latest Blog updates. Funny it also showed videos I mark as Favorite on YouTube, which I guess is okay. Kind of like advertising for them without doing anything like posting a link.

It's ok. I was looking forward to this update but there's a few no brainers that they really seemed to eff up. Please let me know if there's some hidden customization feature that I'm not seeing to fix these things:

-You can't see your own status from the main page, I don't always remember what my last status was and it's annoying to have to go back to your profile.
Yeah, this bugs me too. Why not put the status next to your name at the top, and put those "You have a friend waiting, you have a group invitation, etc" stuff on the sidebar above the other stuff. At least so I can tell what I set last.

-The application feed is a good idea but why the fuck do I have feeds of apps that I'm not using? Peices of flair? Superpoke? Digsby? wtf is Digsby? Why would I want a feed of these? If I block that specific application it just replaces it with a more irrelavent one, how about the ones I actually friggen use.
I HEAR YOU!

I really hope they add more customization options here or I'm going to just delete a lot of friends till I have a more managable feed or something.
The first thing I did was add them all into categories. Then on the home page I discovered if you drag all the items in the "More" section above the thick line, they stay appeared and the More section disappears. (It reappears if you start dragging again)
2ykclep.jpg

Then just get into the habit of clicking between them for your most important friends. I just wish it would remember your selection instead of always defaulting to the "live feed" on reload.

I also did that because my OCD doesn't allow that out of place "More" button to be there. I can't STAND knowing there's stuff hidden from me I might be missing. Especially in the second list where stuff gets added every time people use it. I don't want to keep clicking that More link to see if something new is in there.

Yeah, I don't get why it didn't compress all those into one update like it does for other things, like your Last.fm, Flickr and YouTube updates, which BTW, awesome idea!

Yeah, I was under the impression "Live" meant it used AJAX to refresh every minute or 10. It should. On both the middle and right side boxes. I mean seriously! Why make us manually reload. Or click the button. Do it for us! This is Web 2.0 in 2009, Chris!

I KNOW! I mean every fucking story FaceBook posts is full of whiners who refuse to just go right to the goddamned source. "Mr. President, I want you to stop the war, but instead of coming to Washington DC and protesting outside the White House, I think I'll stay here in my hometown and stand outside the Starbucks." You ain't gonna get anything changed by sitting in your comfort zone!

Is it me or the news feed is not showing a lot of things it is supposed to show? especially photos, it doesn't matter if a click one of the filter, and i can see the photos in my friends profiles or in the photo app.

It's possible that individual User's privacy settings are set to not send out updates about these things. I don't know if those settings carried over to the new live feed.

Yeah I just started using that sometime last month, I stumbled upon that option by accident. It's pretty sweet connecting it to my google reader account so instead of going through the motions to share something on facebook I just click share in my google reader and it shows up.

Anyone know if the new comments option that they just added to GR carries over to FB through this? I haven't checked yet.

EDIT:

Ok it's a ridiculously huge oversight that you can't choose which apps you have a feed to on your home page. Or at least instead of choosing seemingly random ones to put up there, at least put ones that I actually have or ones that, say, the majority of my friends use so it's actually useful.
Also, thanks Jasaco for showing me how those filter options are meant to work, it's making this FB update go from... ehhh... to slightly 'fuck yeh'. Oh and instead of refreshing the page, you can just click on the feed you already have selected and it refreshes it.

All of those settings got reset to default.

Huh? It is in the settings menu.

And to the other guy: you can control what apps can post stories to your wall.

Anyone else getting a buggy feed? Some things aren't showing up when they should be, other things are showing up in random order... what's the deal?

Same. If I filter by Links, for example, some stuff might be missing — if I refresh, it'll come back. I notice this for the Events filter, too. It's only been showing one event, while if I go to the actual Events page, I can see tons more that my friends are attending. It's been like that for days, though... I wonder if I'm just misunderstanding how it's supposed to function.

I'm really surprised that the "x and y and now friends" messages are gone from the news feed, as well photo comments. I don't care about the former, but the latter I kind of miss.

Yes, shit randomly disappears for me too. If I hit the filter link again, it shows it all.

Jasoco said:

Not sure if anyone above me responded about this, but I figured out how to fix it. Just drag whichever Friend List that you want as a default above "News Feed" and when you load Facebook that one on top will be the default.

Not only do I despise the new look, but everything is running slowly, not showing up, messages get stuck in "now sending," etc. Pure shit. I like Facebook but I kind of hope this update destroys the site and turns it into the next Friendster/ Myspace/ etc. Maybe I'll have the stones to resist signing up for yet another goddamn social networking site if that happens :P

After a few days, I like the new things, especially that 'Public Pages' are added to the updates. But there are a lot of things that have disappeared for no apparent reason, I've had 2 friends change their status to engaged and I had no idea because it's no longer on the feed, etc.

yeah I was fine with the last version. My feed doesn't even usually show when people write on my wall and it is harder (if even still possible) to find status updates.

I hate that they took away the "John is" part from your status update. Now it's just a sterile box which I'm not sure what I'm supposed to type in anymore. I used to get inspiration to post from that, like:

John is... running from the police.
John is... dizzy...spilling drink.
John is... not the least bit sorry for breaking wind at Taco Bell.

Now, I'm like, "Meh."
(my name's not really John, btw)

Not our fault you try to be a comedian in every little status update.

Facebook's new twitter-like front page just makes me realize how boring most of the people on my friends list are. It'd be nice to be able to hide status updates altogether while showing other updates.

What? I'm not talking about jokes. How are any of those updates jokes? And what does fault have to do with anything? Was I blaming someone here for something? What the hell are you even talking about?

You can still put "is" yourself, you're a big boy. Personally, I like not being constrained by the being verb.

My home page just gets clogged with 15 different photos that some friend has posted. Or a bunch of notes and tests they've taken.

Should be able to collapse them or something because the ability to skim over the latest updates for anything vaguely worth your time is gone. I'm sure the amount of time people spend on the site has dramatically fallen as a result of the increased barrier to intra-friend communication

Yeah, this "live feed" method is really shitty. Now my home page is nothing but people's status updates and one friend sending "gifts" to 10 people in a row. I don't give a shit about any of that, and it's made worse by the fact that it seems they got rid of the filter to decide what shows up more/less often.

Is there a way to shut off the annoying gift-giving updates (gave a cigar, gave an Easter bunny etc.) without disabling updates from that friend in general? It sucks.

Also, has anyone else noticed that items on your wall are no longer listed in chronological order? So if someone posts on your wall, and you write on their, and they reply on yours, the line item that says "you wrote on so-and-so's wall" is no longer wedged between their two posts on your wall. Absurd, and it extends to all sorts of posts/items. Hate it. This, coupled with the fact that there are no more timestamps on wall entries, and that you can't change the appearance of wall items/entries except for deleting them outright, is very annoying.

Lastly, have you noticed that the font that's used for wall posts (on a friend's wall or your own status updates) is different if you do it through your home page versus going to your/their profile page wall and entering it? Odd.

What is bizarre is how they focus on certain things each update.

When they added status, it was big. Then 2-3 updates ago status became a minor thing, you had to make extra clicks to see what people wrote, and very few people used it. Now suddenly status is the MAIN thing.

Remember pokes? Now its been pushed all the way down the homepage to a tiny thing. That was a big part of facebook 1.

Where are the birthdays listed? Now theres a bunch of crap on the right of my homepage, but I cant find upcoming birthdays.

Im sure next time birthdays will be front and center and the wall will be moved to page 2 or something.
