I thought I'd make a new thread for this, since I'm still on the lookout for a monitor that does everything I want, and there are always quite a few of them announced at CES.

=========================
NEW NEWS!

ASUS PG27UQ

3840 x 2160 on 27"
144 Hz G-sync
HDR with 1,000cd/m² maximum brightness and 384 zone local dimming backlight
Quantum dot IPS panel with DCI-P3 color space

Holy crap!

I want this so bad...but I also want ultrawide monitor.

If they make an ultrawide equivalant to this, I would buy it in a heartbeat, it pretty much has everything checkmarked.

If someone buys two, don't forget about me!

If that thing was an ultrawide it would be the dream but it would be sooooooo expensive.

Damn, the PG27UQ is pretty much what I've been waiting for and more.

I just feel like waiting a bit for the new HDMI specifications so that G-Sync might become obsolete and Nvidia won't charge premiums for it anymore.

But it's not like that benefits me much in terms of technology advancement.

I feel like people have been waiting for / asking for OLED for a really, really, really long time now.

Is there even any indication that OLEDs are going to be more affordable / widespread any time soon?

HDR 4k Monitor not going to be £300, is it?

FUCK it's EVERYTHING we all asked for together!

What's the catch?!

So with the HDMI 2.1 announcement is G Sync actually worthwhile still? Will HDMI 2.1 do everything G Sync does or is it only similar in supporting VRR?

HDMI is just the interface standard, you still need a GPU on the source system that specifically supports the feature. It's another way to support variable refresh but we don't know the important details about how it performs yet. Knowing TV manufacturers, when equipment does begin to support it, we'll get a variety of TVs with different variable refresh ranges and varying quality of implementation.

There's no way for it to actually replace G-Sync, not least because HDMI is not a computer interface and is designed to serve the needs of consumer entertainment equipment. They will co-exist.

I would assume it's more like Free-sync, without the hardware compensation for low frame rates that g-sync has (although this can be done in software as well). Going to be a while before we get anything that is up to this standard though. Standard is not even officially released until Q2 2017.

I'd have to wait until Spring 2018 (saving) before I could do that. Hmm... By then it might drop in price to like £800

At least my daydreams just got a whole lot more exciting.

Maybe a refurbished one...

Ah thanks for the help there guys. For a moment I became hopeful the price of my dream monitor may be dropping drastically. I'll probably still keep saving and waiting for G Sync in the right monitor then.

That ASUS PG27UQ is now the end-game monitor!
I guess they didn't say anything about a release date or price? Whatever they do, I just hope they step up their quality control. Now the waiting begins...

Does anyone know if quantum dot ips displays still have that ips glow and poor contrast?

Only info I can find on quantum dot ips is the display used on LG G4 and I've never actually seen one in person.

In regard to contrast, it's not so much about the quantum dots (those are, IIRC, primarily to reach the color space), it's about the local dimming.

If that is implemented well (and fast) -- and it should be, this is probably the first local dimming implementation targeted entirely at gaming -- it should result in a massively higher contrast picture for most content than any LCD monitor before it.

Sounds great! Hopefully local dimming doesn't raise the price too much. I'd pay up to $1500 for a monitor like this since it looks to be quite future proof too.

Maybe I'll finally get to play dark games with the lights off as they were meant to be played!

How is 1080p content on a 4K display? I'd love that monitor, but 4k @ 144Hz is a pipedream at this point. I would assume that perfect 2:1 scaling should mean 1080p content looks good, but you never know in practice.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
I need a 4K 32"+ monitor. I am willing to pay 1.2k for it, but nothing good will pop up.

That ASUS PG27UQ looks insane. But I can never go back to 27" after having experienced this ultrawide monitor I have now. I love it so much. Maybe next year!

It seems they are branding it "G-Sync HDR". And yeah, it's clearly a new module.

G-Sync HDR? Que announcement at NVIDIA CES conference.

Monitor of my dreams requires some shady, dark reality in return through the use of empty pockets.

No, the Omen X35 is the first high-refresh VA monitor with more than 1080 vertical pixels.

For me at least, that's an important milestone.

The question is whether or not the panel can respond quick enough to keep up with the refresh rate. If it doesn't, it'll be a blurry mess like the Predator Z35. VA, 144-200Hz, 2560x1080, and worthless at high refresh rates.

I don't really understand. TVs evolve comparably quickly if you want to keep up with the very best thing, and they are even more expensive per unit.

And if you don't need to keep up with the very best thing then you can easily pay 300€ for a monitor once every 5 years and be content with it. (I bought my current monitor for ~350€ ~5 year ago)

The main difference is TV's are much easier to retask, especially for families wanting to use it as their main viewing screen. TV's Just provide so much more value respectively. I mean don't get me wrong. I absolutely love my Asus MG279Q. IPS 144hz, freesync etc. It was $440 on sale. My TV is 55" KS8000 4K HDR, VA panel, not OLED, but stunning compared to my monitor and still suits a lot of my needs, would be perfect if it had slightly lower input lag (20ms is generally still pretty great though) and could take advantage of its native 120hz panel, would love freesync as well. Still even with its restrictions, for $729 that's hard to beat. I can't imagine getting a monitor anywhere near that good for the price, not to mention the size. Seems to me we are at a point where PC gamers need to start embracing TV's and TV's manufscturers need to start embracing gamers, including PC.

This is where I'm at. Glad to see that the omnimonitor finally exists, but I can't go back to 16:9.

We're so close though. Next year, hopefully.

That PG27UQ sounds pretty much perfect... hope it's as good as it sounds. Can't wait for tftcentral to get their hands on it.

Added the price for the PG27UQ to the OP. Really nice price too, I wonder about the EU pricing.

Let's see if CES brings any other surprises in the monitor space, I never expected local dimming.

The PG27UQ looks dope but way too expensive for me. I envy the person with a PC powerfull enough to spit out high framerates at 3840×2160.
Was contemplating on buying the PG248Q soon but that XB252Q looks quite promising(hate the design though). Time to wait for some reviews.

$1199 is not bad at all.
Yeah, I'd have expected them to go even higher for the first local dimming / HDR monitor (especially when it also has 144 Hz and G-sync!)

Perhaps they know more about the state of the market 9 months from now than we do, which prevents them from charging more.
