From newest EW, the cast talks about the show:

On why New Girl works

DESCHANEL: The entertainment business gets into pandering a lot. There’s a lot of groups who study the public to see what they want. But the weird thing is, this was just all of us being like, “Well, we think this is funny,” so we’re putting out what we think is funny and not thinking about it in that way… People want to think that you can guess what people want and then give it to them, but we’re not guessing what people want. We’re just doing stuff we think is funny and putting it out there and hoping that other people think it’s funny too.

On the show becoming a true ensemble

JOHNSON: They launched it on Zooey, and she did an amazing job. And then they pushed Schmidt out to see if somebody else could break through. And he did, and then they said “Well, hell, let’s see if we can get everybody though.” [It’s like in] basketball, you can’t score if they don’t call your number. Now everybody is getting their number called. And everyone is hitting their shots.

GREENFIELD: I think why certain shows are not successful is because all of a sudden, like a basketball team, they get exposed early on and they realize, “Well, we can’t run this play because this one can’t run.” And it was a real blessing [for us to find out] as we’ve continued to go that when you have people who can play the big comedic foil of a scene in one episode and then the next episode play the straight man, you can very likely last for a very long time.

DESCHANEL: A couple people said to me, “I feel that all of a sudden it’s an ensemble and this was supposed to be your show.” And I’m like, “It was never supposed to be my show!” You can’t have a television show that can run for a long time based on one person. You don’t have Mary Tyler Moore without Rhoda. And we have all these amazing characters. What, everyone’s just supposed to be in the background all the time, and then one person is getting every joke? That’s impossible. That’s a myth that a show is all about one person. It’s called Seinfeld, but all those people made storylines work. I always knew this was an ensemble.”

On the romantic tension between Nick and Jess

DESCHANEL: From what I gather this is a very slow burn…They sometimes tell us not to hug because they’re so afraid. “You guys have too much chemistry! Don’t hug!” Jake and I started being like, “This is ridiculous!” They said, “Okay, fine, you can hug, but don’t hug too long.”… Schmidt & Cece (Hannah Simone) is obviously more on the surface, which makes Nick & Jess exciting but also sort of a nail biter, because it’s so under the surface. But I do think we’ll make some progress.

JOHNSON: For a long time, I wanted them to get together. Because I was watching Max and Hannah having all this fun where they’re together and not together. And our whole storyline would be like, “We looked at each other weird.” And we’re hearing a lot online, and on Twitter, and from our fans saying, “Give us more”… But as it’s progressed, I’ve realized that in fact the writers are smarter than I am. I’m happy with what they’re doing. If they abandoned the Nick-Jess story entirely, I would lose a lot of interest in playing the part. As of now I really love it, because our show can go to absolute crazy town. But while we’re in crazy town, there’s always a grounding reality: This character feels, deep down, something different for that girl. As an actor, that’s a nice thing to always have. If and when they decide to finally play that card, I’m very excited to go down that road.

On the Nick-Schmidt friendship

GREENFIELD: We had begged the writers, and we still do, to give us more stuff where we’re on the same page, and we’ve been pitching an episode they’ll never do: The two of us become detectives. Something happens with Jess at work and she’s suspicious of something and Nick and Schmidt are like, “Oh that’s too bad, maybe we’ll look into it.” And she’s like, “No, please, don’t look into it.” And we’re like, “No, no, no, we’re just going to take a look at what’s going on.” And the two of them make one dumb move after the next… But it’s been really nice, and they have no choice but to put Nick and Schmidt in more situations. Because ultimately you want to see why these guys are friends. They can’t always be fighting, so those moments where we get to have fun and laugh and be in a similar storyline where our goals are [similar], that’s the best. The two of us have a really good time together and we both are so very clear on who our characters are and how they play off of one another. We just beg for those situations.

JOHNSON: Winston (Lamorne Morris) and Nick have always had something there, because they have an old friendship. At first, the writers had Nick kind of hating Schmidt and thinking he was just a douchebag, so Schmidt would do something funny and Nick would be really annoyed. Now when Nick and Schmidt are together, they team up. And they’re genuine friends and they’re idiots. Those two guys together can get into a lot of f—ing trouble. It’s like two takes on the same dumb theme. I view Nick and Schmidt as The Odd Couple. When one of those characters is running wild and the other one is trying to put him in his place, you can’t run as far. But when they’re both gunning together, it’s really fun.

On the Schmidt-Cece relationship

GREENFIELD: I like that he’s in pursuit again. It’s fun. I’m competitive so I want to win, personally… There’s a small part of me that would like for them to get back together and seal it up and get married — not save it for the end of the series. Let’s get married real early, move next door or somehow stay in the loft in some weird arranged thing, and see Schmidt in a full-on marriage. There’s a well of comedy in that storyline.

I would LOVE to see a Schmidt/Nick detective show.

I'm bummed about Schmidt and Cece though. :-(

Yeah. :( Because of the way that story ended, I was actually expecting Nick to interrupt Schmidt during the tag and give him the hug he was craving. Didn't happen, alas. ;)

I'm not an Olivia Munn hater but I didn't find her (or the character) all that compelling. The Nick story was easily the least interesting for me as a result. We'll see what happens in the next ep (which is the last until January).

Didn't notice there was a New Girl OT... Last episode was great.

"They took my doctor's appointment suit! They took El Capitan!"

Pretty good episode. Jess and Winston together were great especially the parts with the maintanance guy. I cracked up when they finally said "I feel like were forgetting a very obvious solution" and it cuts to them tied up with the Duechebag jar empty. :lol

Nick's story was ok, only because of the 'never leave the bar' parts. Schmidt and Cece :(

Was Winston and Jess' storyline supposed to be Breaking Bad? With the tub leaking through the roof, Winston in his underwear, and the meth references.

Holy crap at the bathroom scene with Nick and Schmidt. "You're my boo..." :lol :lol :lol

edit: Oh fuck, Munn? Ehhhhhh, we'll see how this goes.

I'm okay with Munn coming on the show, she's hot. Too bad Cece and Schmidt didn't work out. I guess they keep that for the end of the season, they are meant for each other.

And Remy is awesome :lol

The Schmidt/Cece stuff didn't really work for me. One of those "mix-up that a 10-minute adult conversation when sober could solve" situations that sitcoms use to delay the inevitable. Too transparent.

Nick's crossing-the-bar flashbacks were the funniest part of the episode. We didn't really get a lot of Munn though, just looking at her. So who knows if that relationship will be any good.

Jess and Winston were kinda just messing around, and once again a fairly winston-centric episode fails to make him a more interesting character, but there were funny moments.

damn whats with all the munn hate

She's not funny and she had that whole brett ratner thing, where she got mad at him for not giving her a part because she thought she could sleep her way to the top.

She's just really an all around bad actress.

Loved Schmidt though in the mirror

You my boo

Casting news from EW:

Brenda Song, who starred on The Suite Life with Zack and Cody and its spinoff The Suite Life on Deck, has been cast in a recurring role this season on the comedy hit.
The actress will play Daisy, an intense and hugely competitive young woman who dislikes “quitters” and becomes interested in Winston (Lamorne Morris) after seeing him strike out with Holly (fellow newcomer on the show Brooklyn Decker) at the bar. Song most recently had an arc on ABC’s Scandal and had a big screen turn in The Social Network.
In other New Girl casting news, the series recently signed Nate Corddry (The Daily Show) for a guest-star role, playing a guy who creeps out Jess (Zooey Deschanel) later this season.

hm. Well the Nate Corddry news is good for sure. Song I'm less sure about, never liked her character on Suite Life (checks wiki to make sure I'm not too old to admit having seen that show...nah I'm good) but who knows. Decker's also guesting on the league soon and was supposedly pretty good (according the cast, so grain of salt attached), maybe she'll surprise on both.

This one only worked for me in parts. I loved the Cece/Schmidt material and most of the Jess/Sam stuff (David Walton is hot, okay?) but hated Winston as a plot device and continue to find Nick/Olivia Munn to be a very boring couple. The ending also felt like an uncomfortable schmaltzy retread of the show when it was still finding itself.

Is this a guys show or a girls show. I enjoy parts of it, but all the lovey dovey stuff puts me off.

I'd say its pretty evenly split to appeal to both sexes. When it first premiered I would have said its more appealing to women due to focusing more on Jess but that's much more an ensemble show it's good for either gender.

Loser slave of the system :(
Okay episode. Olivia Munn as hot as ever. Loved this part:

That was the best X-mas themed episode of all the sitcoms this year.

I'd give it to Parks. That episode was sublime.

IMO it's more oriented towards guys than girls but it works for both.

Guys can appreciate a relationship story too, and Schmidt's is told mostly from the guy's perspective.

The 'lovey dovey' stuff feels too forced, like generic romcom stuff. It makes me cringe, and really pulls me out of the show. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying romance is for women only, but the way the show flip flops has me confused about its target market.

30 Rock, Parks and Rec I would say is target to men and women. New Girl? I'm not sure.

Amazing episode, one of my favorites of the season! I liked the return of Sam and I think Olivia Munn is pretty good in her role.

Just finished the Christmas episode. Really cute. Funniest scene had to be Angie's flash at the nurse- super cliched in itself, but Schmidt rolling backwards to take a butchers was hilarious, and then to have Winston pop his head round too. :lol

I still think this show has a problem with its supporting cast being waaaaaay more interesting than Jess, with episodes like this that build up to "Jess's moment" getting all their best material out of the way early on, but the carol scene (and Jess's ridiculous arm waving in the hospital) was worth not really giving a fuck about her relationship problems.

Oh, and the Nick lapdance was so cringeworthy but so funny.

I just discovered the show last week and caught up to it. Where have I been from this magnificence?

Winston is climbing up the numbers to be one of my favorite characters in any sitcom.

Just caught the episode now, and the Black Santa cop bit really got me. Some other good moments in this one too. I think I missed a week or two though. And I'll definitely need to watch at least parts of the Christmas one online as the DVR cut off the very start and end (new DVR.)

Winston has been amazing this season. It's like they realized he was barely there in S1 so they made sure to bring him on the level of the other characters. At this point I think the cast is perfect.
