The Pixel was a run of the mill phone sold on brand alone. I don't know why anyone paid premium prices for it when the past Nexus line was the same thing but cheaper. I'm going to be irritated if the same strategy works again. Hopefully they throw us a bone and put some Tango AR processing in it.

Didn't iPhone also remove the headphone jack? How is that and lack of waterproofing that is also something the iPhone doesn't have as a reason to go sprinting to Apple? What am I missing?

Never had interest in Pixel, but I can't imagine buying anything, ANYTHING, without a headphone jack. Phones, game devices, etc.

If I can't connect a $5 pair of headphones, and am forced to spend god knows fucking what on bluetooth headphones or whatever these devices need, that's absolute nonsense.

My Nexus 4 touchscreen became unresponsive after being out in heavy rain so waterproofing is definitely a feature I look for. Generally, though, it depends on the price of the device. However, they can't compete with others in the premium price point without waterproofing. In the past year and a half, reviewers have been pretty harsh on flagships that aren't waterproof.

Actual in-app performance on the Galaxy S8 is not great. The Google Pixel raised the bar for what smooth Android performance looks like, and the Galaxy S8 just can't keep up. In the above picture you see Android's built-in GPU profiler mode. Each vertical line is the time it takes to draw a single frame, with the horizontal green bar representing 60FPS. Bars under the green line rendered in time, resulting in smooth 60FPS scrolling. Bars that overshoot the line took too long to render, resulting in a stutter in the UI animation.

Even in the lowest resolution possible—1480×720—the Galaxy S8 still drops a ton of frames when scrolling complicated apps like the Play Store. The highly optimized Google Pixel—at its full 2560×1440 resolution—is easily getting frames in on time. And even if things do slow down, there's a sizable amount of render time still.

No matter what resolution you pick on the Galaxy S8, scrolling (especially scrolling slowly) has this weird stutter to it and a slight ghosting effect. Not everyone is sensitive to small performance issue like this, but if you are, you'll find the S8 a little unpleasant to use. I wish Samsung focused more on optimizing the whole display and GPU stack to hit 60FPS and run more smoothly, rather than adopting the raw benchmark focus the company seems to have now.

That's BS, The 3.5mm jack is so damn tiny that if it didn't hinder the design of this:

Then it's not going to hinder the design of an almost 6 inch god damn phone.

The only reason companies are doing this is so they can force you to buy more accessories just so you can regain basic functions like charging and listening to music at the same time.

Guess I'll stick with my Pixel for a while. Maybe they'll realize they screwed up by the time the third iteration comes around. I'm not gonna buy a phone that trades a headphone jack for some trash speakers.

Headphone jack or waterproofing. I'm ok with a phone having either, but missing both? No thanks. I use my headphone jack too much to give it up without some other benefit.

What do you define as premium? Jaybirds, the recommended set from Wirecutter, don't support them and they're $100+.

Back to the point, NFC pairing is good. But that's just one part of the transition. I've had many BT buds and none have supported auto on/off connections. The usual BT headphone requires you to manually turn on and off the earphones, and also don't support features like auto playing/pausing when inserted in your ear.

not worrying about having your phone near pools, splashpads, etc. (or even taking a photo underwater in the pool if you want to 'risk' it) is a big plus for a lot of people, especially families with young kids.

iOS 11 is opening NFC up.

as someone who went wireless, I'm never going back. I honestly cannot remember the last time I used the headphone jack, both on my laptop and my phone. Even before I got my 7 Plus I was wireless on my 6 and it was wonderful.

Before people jump to conclusions...

Just because the leak didn't mention water resistance, doesn't mean it won't have it.

Also, remember the Galaxy S8 rumors? Stating it would ditch the headphone jack for a proprietary port? It didn't happen.

What I'm saying is, don't believe everything. Could be all true, or only parts of it.

All we can do is wait!

I really hope the XL 2 is water resistant. It's even becoming a feature in budget phones.

You'd be surprised at the number of people that consume media strictly from their phone.

While I have a TV, my girlfriend typically watches her shows from her phone instead. I always ask her why she does that instead of using the TV, but she just says she "doesn't know it's just natural to her"

The Pixel XL is the best phone I've ever had, but I won't buy any phone that doesn't have a headphone jack. I use my headphone jack all day.

Now, I'm fine without the waterproofing. I'm out on the water 2-3 days a week fly fishing, and I've yet to lose a phone to water damage. I've dropped "non-waterproofed" phones into rivers, including my Pixel XL, and it's never caused any problems. I would really like full waterproofing, but it's not a must have for me.

Missing a headphone jack though? That's a deal breaker.

If there's any truth to this, then I might just pick up the old Pixel this year. I was planning to get the new one when it comes out, but I might not be doing that. I have a Nexus 5X right now.

OnePlus is not an option for me, I use Project Fi.

If it has the same bezels as the previous Pixel or Nexus then it's DoA.

How the fuck can Google think it can get away with bezels that large in 2017?

Yeah but stereo separation doesn't make sense on such a small device. Mixing both channels to a single speaker gives you the same sound quality.

No headphone jack = 100% dead to me. Hate this trend, and will combat it as long as any other phone makers still have phones with jacks on them by getting their products.

Don't forget: Rumors = facts!

The only thing I miss on my Pixel are the dual front facing speakers. One speaker was such a big downgrade. I have no problem if they scrap the headphone jack for it.
I would never use my phone for music again after my 3GS *smilesatmyFiiOX3*

Just a reminder to people:

Water resistance != Waterproofing

Don't submerge your phone in water, it voids the warranty on many water resistant phones. It's a last ditch defense to save your phone from water damage, but the first line is not to expose it in the first place.

I will admit that I'm amused by all the people in the Android camp who vocally derided Apple for cutting the headphone jack last year now having to face that issue on their own side.

(I still think it was a bad idea.)

My work phone is a Pixel and I do really like it, but man if the camera wasn't underwhelming. I don't know if it's me or my unit, but I'm convinced that my S6 Edge takes better photos because I prefer the sharper tones. The Pixel's photos just look "OK" and a bit washed out to me.

Definitely won't be getting a Pixel 2.

As an iPhone 7 owner, I regret getting this phone because of the lack of headphone jack. I knew it was missing and talked myself into believing it wouldn't be a big deal. That was a mistake. I CONSTANTLY have to think about how I'm going to listen to podcasts and audio and when I travel it's a hassle. It's just dumb. I love the phone otherwise. I'm probably leaving Apple after I pay this phone off.

Uh...either fix your phone or your eyes. I have both phones and the cameras aren't even close. The Pixel camera runs circles around the S6. Make sure you have your Pixel's camera settings set to the highest resolution (it isn't set that way by default).

Long time iPhone user that will be buying a Android device in the next month or so over this whole headphone jack/price thing. Been using a 6+ since launch. Stereo speakers are nice but I wouldn't sacrifice a headphone jack for them. Waterproofing I don't so much care about because my phones have never been waterproof and I don't plan on changing my usage habits if I got one that was.

No waterproofing sucks. The phone sounds almost identical to last year's Pixel but with slightly smaller bezels. If they take out the headphone jack on the higher end model then I won't consider getting one at all. The Note 8 is looking more like my next phone...

Thanks for your concern, but my eyes are fine thanks. And obviously I have it running at the highest resolution because why the hell wouldn't I.

I dunno man, I just prefer the way my S6 takes snaps. It's just an opinion, no need to get personal.

He's sort of right. In most objective measures of camera quality the Pixel beats out the S6. You can think otherwise, but then it really is purely subjective and just your "eyes"
