New model GBA SP?

I read that there's a new model of the GBA SP out that has a back-lit screen instead of front-lit. Is it true?

That's a joke thread right? Gameboy Micro. (just in case you're serious...and ignorant)

That's it then, I'm trading in my DS for one of those. The only reason I even got a DS was because the screen was so much better looking. I was thinking of getting a Micro, but now that the SP is back-lit, I can get the larger screen and good lighting. How much is a DS worth trading at Gamestop or EB? I hope it's worth at least $50.

This really pisses me off, because IMO, a backlit GBA SP is pretty much the perfect Game Boy. I love the Micro, but it only plays GBA games, and it's more style over function. I want a backlit SP!!

Except for the fact that of course the DS has way more games coming out and way better games coming out and online play coming to boot. The GBA SP from a library stand point doesn't have much in the way of new software coming.

DS > GBA SP backlit > Micro > GBA SP

Is there any way to distinguish from the older versions? I'm planning to by an SP and would like to get the best :D Micro is MUCH too small for my hands.

Why the hell would you trade in a DS for a GBA when the DS plays all the GBA games on a great screen? (Not to mention DS has the best game lineup this fall.)

The only DS game I'm remotely interested in is Xenosaga I&II and Final Fantasy III and those are a long way off. I'm not really a fan of online games either. I like the design of the SP more than the DS too.

so this explains the multiple SKUs that i saw today at Gamestop. i was wondering why there were two SKU #'s for some of the colored GBA SPs

As John R. has said, this is the PERFECT GBA SP...

It's great in size, screen, portability, and flip-flop design...

sure no headphones and such, but the SP was awesome as it is and the reason why I didn't play some games on it was because I figured the graphics lost something on it due to the washed-out background...

Here's an awful picture:

Model AGS-101. They're only in the new colors (Graphite / Pearl Blue) now. Who knows if they'll extend to the rest of the line.

Yup.

For university, I actually prefer the micro since I have a bazillion other things to carry. For home, the SP backlit would be perfect...

Thanks guess I'm dropping by my local game shop to pick up one of these.

Hmm... I just had my NES SP serviced for a bad screen -- I bet I'm not lucky enough to have a backlit screen in there now, eh?

This is new news though... I don't remember hearing about this anywhere -- is Nintendo trying to softly leak it onto the market?

I played the Micro for 10-12 minutes this evening and my hands were hurting, and I've never had a problem with playing any handheld for a long period of time. Wasn't even a thumb-intensive game -- Ultimate Brain Games. I don't get who could possibly blow $100 on this. This SP sounds like a much better option.

Whoa, hold the phone - just so I'm clear on this, this is a GBA SP with a screen backlit, like the top screen of the DS or the GB Micro?

Why didn't anyone know about this?
I'm disappointed in you, GAF!

That's exactly correct. And the reason nobody knew about it was because NOA doesn't want to take attention away from the Micro.

Jooey, do you have any pics of your unit? I'd love to see a side-by-side comparo of the old and new SPs.

do you REALLY want pictures from my 1.2 megapixel PDA camera?

Not a big deal IMO.

They probably switched LCD providers, phasing out the older styled GBA LCDs they were getting for these newer backlit ones which are probably more akin to the ones they're ordering for the DS.

They're probably getting a break on cost since they might be ordering them for the regular GBA SP and DS together from the same manufacturer.

Yeah, I can see why they'd want to keep it a secret. I guess I'm just surprised that they were able to *keep* it a secret until the new SPs went to retail.
