The 3DS has healthy support at the moment from Nintendo and 3rd parties. If there's any console they'll want to keep around for a bit after the launch of the NX, it'll be the 3DS instead of the WiiU.

Sega/Atlus have been a bit different lately. If niche stuff like Miku (as per usual) and 7th Dragon III: VFD does okay, then they might as their final 3DS title.

Seriously, and think about it: Nintendo's remasters have sold well. Wind Waker HD, Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora's Mask 3D, etc. It isn't out of the question that they'd have commissioned another remaster for this holiday season. Mario Galaxy would be a great game to choose.

The thing is, Mario Galaxy had that mostly ignored feature known as pointer. And while remotely collecting Star Bits and shooting them at anything but hungry Lumas could be ignored for the most part, grabbing the blue star widgets could not. So it would end up with a semi-automatic control system and reworking of few problematic levels, or with reworking of half the levels, or with some turbo weird control system that would put Kid Icarus Uprising complaints to shame.

Of course not, 60fps graphics at that level are difficult for 3DS, plus the small screen could cause problems, if they want their portable HD ports to work (REsi4) they would have to wait for NX

I don't think it's anything unusual. 3DS owners aren't going to drop dead when the NX lands; they're still a market Nintendo can sell to. The last few 3DS games could be built simultaneously with NX up-ports, there might be a few 3DS games remaining after the NX launches if they were in development for a while earlier, so on. I doubt they'll really coexist; Nintendo will nigh abandon the 3DS as soon as the NX launches.

A simple button press could suffice for the blue star widgets. It wouldn't be that bad.

From Nintendo, the Wii U only has Sticker Star 2 and Zelda left, the latter of which is huge but will be on NX day 1 as well. Nintendo has basically abandoned the Wii U, that's why they'd focus on their cash cow.

3DS isn't dead. Wii U is. They have to sell Pokemon and others this holiday.

Also, you'd rather have some momentum going into a new system of the same type than none, as the Wii > Wii U and PSP > Vita taught us.
