The Media Player works with both your home server and when plugging a USB stick with media into one of the available ports on the PS4. Your home server will appear as a media option in the player automatically and finding your media is simple and quick. You may also simply enjoy music as background music on your PS4!

I believe its lossless, and its a great container. Its popular because its open source, can have subtitles as part of the container, and can support all kind of audio formats including FLAC. It even support menus, chapters and more.

A lot of people associate it with pirated stuff, but it's pretty much the format of choice for anyone who rips their blu ray collections and essentially wants nothing but the raw file. It's a great container.

It is the best container out there, AFAIK. Flexible and easy to fiddle with.

It's not always convenient, especially if your desktop only and don't own a laptop.

I have my PC connected to a TV in my bedroom but for the TV in my living room, I'm still reliant on PS3 Media Server.

Still pissed there's no FLAC support though. Looks like I'll be using my PS3 for some time yet.

No? Well, at least, I don't have a PC.. . Anything I'd really use a PC for, besides gaming of course, I use my mobile for. The ability to watch things from it on my TV is massive, and now that I don't have to switch back to the PS3 or turn to the Chromecast, it's really convenient. Baffling that the 4 didn't have it from the get-go.

I'm trying right now and it's not afaik. The same file that runs on PS3 cannot be played on my PS4.
