Analysts expected Switch 2 to sell between 6-8 million units at launch (More than PS4, PS5, or Switch launches)

How does that make any sense when we didn't have the current economic situation then or complete saturation of Switch 1 in homes?

Hell, or the increase in Console prices? Increase in accessory prices? Increase in game prices? Increase across the fucking board all while staring down a recession? But sure, it's the same situation.

You know...a PS5/Pro and an Xbox Series X would be the first ones on the proverbial chopping block if a recession hits, right?

That's a humongous number for a summer launch. Just as 3 million or whatever it was for Switch in March 2017 was a humongous number for a March release for a platform. These are typically quiet/slow periods for console gaming sales.

As a comparison, the PS4 sold 4.5 million units in its first two months, the PS5 sold 4.5 million units in its first two months, and the Switch sold 2.8 million in its first month. 6-8 million in one month would be ~> half of Wii U's total sales, and more than Steam Deck's lifetime sales.

So I guess that boycott over pricing was successful.

There was no boycott. It was somewhat justified whining (albeit whining nonetheless) due to the fact that there was never a realistic possibility Switch 2 would ever launch at $399 with the current market economics of gaming consoles being what they are. And some entitled people simply couldn't (can't?) get past it.

I fully expected the Switch 2 to sell like crazy but honestly, the buzz surrounding the release is pretty tame. Not even that much chatter around here about the upcoming Nintendo.

This system launch is giving me WiiU vibes all over again. No confirmation on fixed joycons, key cards, specific SD requirement, confusing box releases......I'm just going to wait. For the average parent, this thing is going to be a mess

Such keen market analysis. You're one step ahead of all of us. After that initial 6-8 million, it's straight to the gutter. Nintendo's going to slash $200 off the base price, and release all their Switch 1st party titles as free ambassador titles. Pre-order CANCELED.

Fun fact, you can say all that without being a fucking asshole

I mean he still far from the biggest in the category, Michael Pachter

The Switch lite being the worst selling model of all 3
Pachter, now there's a name I've not heard in a long time...

You could argue that the higher game prices might hurt sales, but to think the console itself would fail? That's just ridiculous. It's an improved Switch, and the core concept has already proven mega successful.

I know how much MK sells, but that's not what I'm saying. Post the playtime chart!

Also, the lineup is not super hot imo. Following your list:
  • Mario Kart World | 2025-06-05 → Looks great but you can't play just that
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour | 2025-06-05 [eShop] → ultra low value, overpriced, overall unappealing in its current state
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | 2025-06-05 → old game
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | 2025-06-05 → old game
  • Donkey Kong Bananza | 2025-07-17 → looks cool but not everyone is fully on board with it, as I said many people have some reservations about this
  • Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV | 2025-07-24 → not a new game, requires 60€ camera to work + 20€ content addon.
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World | 2025-08-28 → old game for the most part
  • Drag x Drive | Summer 2025 → if this was a Steam release by an unknown studio instead of an NS2 exclusive it wouln't break 500 wishlists
  • Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | 2025 → Will be great, but it's a NS1 game. Metroid is sadly (inexplicably) a niche series
  • Kirby Air Riders | 2025 → cool, but it's the second cute mascot arcadey racing game from Nintendo in less than 6 months
  • Pokemon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Late 2025 → looks fun despite graphics, but it's a NS1 game design wise.
  • Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment | Winter 2025 → We know exactly what to expect from this one and it's nice that the story is canon this time but it's preaching to the choir. Hardcore Zelda fans that appreciate this kind of game already got the system preordered.
I don't think this lineup is going to drive too many sales. That's why I think they need a follow up direct.
I'd say it's decent for the first 7 months. Exclusive MK is the strongest launch title they could have possibly had, and Pokémon is a multi million seller even as cross gen. DK is a bit of a wild card for me.

You are right that they need to announce more third party games for 2025 and first party ones for 2026.

lol WiiU again. Sure bro, keep telling yourself that once the floodgates of Nintendo games open.

Nintendo knows they'll sell everything they can make, they don't need to do much at the start. After launch we'll get another direct, more announcements leading to Xmas season and early next year bangers to keep the sales coming in.

Also Takashi is an idiot fanboy.

I've followed Nintendo products most of my life, and they are not making Switch 2 consumer friendly at all, despite being marketed towards families. If you seriously think that won't affect sales, I don't know what to tell you. And what console didn't sell out at the start in the last decade? Because seems to me it happens every time, but overall sales end up completely different. Even if they release some decent games, they're taking a sales hit there on the price point too. I'll be damned if I pay $80 for mario kart of all things, and I don't know who would.

My last experience with Switch was horrendous, and I'm not the only one this has happened to. No parent wants to pay on another console where the controllers don't last and they're expensive as hell. Not to mention all the other manufacturing issues they've been having. For me a lot of concerns are unanswered, and they keep making the situation worse
These initial sales numbers are limited by availability in every case listed (even the xbone was sold out on release night).
Exactly

Exactly
When new Xenoblade, Pokémon, Mario, Zelda, exclusive FROM Miyazaki and Animal Crossing start dropping, Switch 2 will keep selling.

If you have followed Nintendo products most of your life, you might be able to answer this: when was the last time a system with mainline Pokemon games flopped?

And there's gonna be Pokémon for Christmas. I won't be one of the buyers, but Nintendo and TPC will not need my meager $$$, either.
