New PS4 Media Player launches today - DLNA, MKV support and more

Is there anyway i can fast forward videos ?
I'm using UMS for now, but i've no problem switching to any other server that supports fast forwarding if anyone can suggest me something
If you think about how it works, any file format that requires transcoding can't do so at 120X FF or even 30X FF on a PC or less powerful DLNA server. So this means that you can only FF with h.264, the agreed upon standard that every STB supports. (Includes M4A, MP4 and other containers that contain h.264 video)

It may be possible on other STBs that natively supports a fast codec for some other format.

I might be misunderstanding you here, but I use Serviio and pressing/holding down R2 fast forwards videos. But I think UMS does too?

have not the latest ums and it does that too exactly.
Most probably he tries to encode every file type, and that can be the problem
i only let it encode filetyps the ps4 cant encode (which are not so much btw)

Probably a noob question, or one that has already been answered somewhere, but I have noticed that when playing a movie in PS4 media player, encoded with AAC sound, my surround system plays audio in 5.1 but the audio sounds weird. I cant describe it perfectly, its some kind of subtle chirping, especially when actors pronounce "s" a lot.

Dunno if you guys know what I am talking about, but it really becomes distracting after a while. Can I get rid of this and have normal audio?

Since this is a PS4 thread I suppose I can post my wish. Am I the only one that found it strange to not be able to reach the last tile to the right by moving left on the first tab?

They did not say no DLNA support. They mentioned it being on the firmware team's list just after at launch.
At launch they said no MP3 and DLNA. The Codec for MP3 is in the software list for the PS4 (from the PS4 menu) and part of a Audio standard for HTML5. DLNA is required for Vidipath as a W3C extension to HTML5.

PS4 will not support media servers, DLNA functionality October 2013 but by November 2013 Sony looking at DLNA and MP3 support for PS4 after 'passionate' response

Okay guys, why can't I get even one MKV file to play?

Or they are not found by the PS4 (while the file is in the library on my PC) or they do not play, and I have tried at least 10 different ones.

Do I need to search for specific ones or so? (codecs..)

the files need to be a folder named videos. if they still don't work theres not much you can do other than changing the video container. the ps4 media player is terrible and very picky about what files it wants to play.

Do you have subtitles with them? I also believe that yes certain mkv's can be packaged in a way that the media player doesn't like.

I dont know what that is though, as the media player on PS4 is terrible and almost worse than nothing at all. I dont think I got anything but music playing on it, and even that was buggy.

According to Jeff Rigby, it's just a placeholder for the real player coming in the future. I believe him on this.

After going through the motions of setting up a media server on my PC when the PS4 media player was released - I was plenty pissed until I realised my Sony Bravia TV which the PS4 is on is a great media player and have had the pleasure of using that instead.

My Samsung Blu-ray and My 2013 70 inch Sony Smart TV (not bragging just showing it's an expensive TV and should do better) can't play some of the video files I have from a Twonky media server version 5.x. I understand this is an issue between Twonky and Samsung and is fixed in Twonky versions higher than 6.2 I think. BUT both my PS3 and PS4 play those files flawlessly including Fast Forward and scene select.

Yes, the current DLNA player is running on the APU and using GDDR5 memory. When it moves to the Southbridge it will be running on Xtensa processors and ARM...much less powerful hardware...will it be as snappy then?

My mum has a WDTV live and that has issues playing mkv's in which I've edited the header info. I simply remux the file using mkvtoolnix and it starts working for her. I think it has something to do with mkv header compression.

I just use mediasharing in WMP. (W10)

They are in a subfolder of ''videos'', there's also some mp4's there and they work just fine.

I'll try some more tonight, change some of the containers too and see if I can make them work.

Otherwise I'll just have to buy me a proper mediaplayer I guess.

Not familiar with W10 but if you tried a recent build of UMS or some other software capable of transcoding it should play with no problems.

Thanks I will definitely try this!

edit: whoo hoo!
Works like a charm, even the subs do, thanks a lot!

Is anyone else having a lot of trouble with "audio format not supported" errors? It's not on all files, but the majority of them.

I'm running files through Plex (not the app, just through PS media player).

It's quite frustrating. Any tips?

I haven't had any problems playing most media types off a usb disk.

However I wish FF and RW were not so blisteringly fast! I'm hard of hearing so when I try to rewind a few seconds to hear a piece of dialogue it always rewinds by at least a minute or two. Would be great if they had a feature similar to Netflix where flicking the thumbstick left or right advanced or reversed playback 15 seconds.

Hey there,

I have a dilemna with streaming mkvs maybe someone can help me out please.

I have three devices that I can stream to: an Xbox One, a Playstation 4, and a Sony Smart TV. Originally I have been using mainly Universal Media Server to stream MKVs to my Xbox One (our Sony TV isn't in my bedroom, and the PS4 didn't originally have DLNA support but even though now it does I still use my XB1 because my univeral remote doesn't work with my PS4).

Everything has been working without issue, until a few months ago I noticed that on my XB1 when I streamed through UMS I wasn't able to fast forward or rewind. After some trial and error I found that disabling subtitles allowed me to fast forward and rewind again, but I need the subtitles on, so you see the dilemna. With UMS, subtitles work, but fast forward and rewind don't. I used Serviio in the past as well and it worked without issue too, so I downloaded it again and now I couldn't get the subtitles to display, but I am able to fast forward and rewind, the complete opposite of UMS. I also tried Windows 10 streaming, and still no subtitles were displayed. The strange part is, I don't have this issue on my Sony TV, it only started to affect my Xbox One a few months ago and now my PS4 too (today is the first time I tried it on my PS4 though). Meaning I can watch mkvs with subtitles on my Sony TV while being able to fast forward and rewind. That, plus the fact that my settings are the same as they always have been, lead me to believe it isn't the fault of UMS or Serviio. But the issue affects both consoles, and I know for a fact it used to work on the XB1.

I'm stumped, I've tried a lot of things on my own but nothing worked. Anyone know why this is happening or if there is a way to fix? Someone explained to me that if it's transcoding the video you won't be able to fast forward/rewind if subtitles are displayed, but then how was I able to stream mkvs with embedded subtitles in the past and fast forward/rewind?

Thank you very much!

For the life of me I cannot figure out how to get UMS to find my PS4 (or vice versa). I am on W10 and UMS 5.2.2. I honestly don't even know where to start. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not really sure what's causing your specific issues, but if they ultimately stem from transcoding, you can actually skip that step. The media player on the PS4 has native MKV support.

Also, since your TV is a Sony, you should be able to use Bravia Sync to control your PS4. Enable "Control for HDMI" or whatever it's called on both the PS4 and the TV. Then you use the Sync Menu button on your remote to select the PS4 from the TV, and all commands set to the TV will get forwarded to the PS4. Press Play on your TV remote, and the TV will transmit the same command to the PS4 via HDMI. For your universal remote, just tell it to send commands to your TV. Your TV will handle the rest, and your remote will be none the wiser.

I dunno much about Windows, but maybe it's a firewall issue or something like that? Typically, in the media player on the PS4, you'd navigate to where it shows the media servers, wait a second or twelve, and the media server should appear. I take it that never happens? Do you have other clients you can stream to, or other servers you can stream from? That'd help narrow down the cause.

Thanks for the reply. Plex works (but does not play certain files with certain audio formats). Buy yeah, UMS never shows up on the PS4. Where would I go in Windows firewall to see if UMS or my PS4 is blocked?

Mine showed up when I started the media player on the PS4.

And did you add the folders with videos yet to UMS?

It has native MKV support but I'm pretty sure it doesn't support bitmap subtitles, which is what you'd get from almost any DVD or Blu-ray rip. Or if it does, there's no apparent way to switch language and subtitle options so a multi-lingual rip still has a chance of needing a transcode.

As to where to find the settings on W10, I guess I'd start with Control Panels? Do y'all still have those?

Yeah, Firewall is in control panel, I just don't know what to look for once I am in the firewall application.

I'll try the port stuff tomorrow and report back.

Mine showed up when I started the media player on the PS4.

That silly, I am not.

Thanks for your replies. Both consoles have native MKV support. But I think I do have transcoding disabled in both UMS and Serviio, and both still don't work right as I mentioned previously. See here and here. Also, these are my subtitle settings for each program, here and here. As you can see, I think everything is set to their default which worked in the past, but for some reason now they do not. I have tried messing around with the subtitle settings in multiple ways (checking/unchecking boxes, leaving the language fields blank, ect) but no luck. From what I can see with UMS, anytime I stream a video the memory buffer goes up which may indicate that it's still transcoding, but I am actually able to go into the transcode folder and play the video without encoding. I can fast forward and rewind, but no subtitles are displayed. With Serviio, I have no way of seeing if it is actually transcoding (though I do have it disabled), but I assume it isn't because like selecting the version of the video with encoding in UMS, I can fast forward and rewind, but no subtitles are displayed.

Also, unfortunately I'm not able to use the TV since it is in someone else's room. I only mentioned it because everything still works as intended on it as opposed to my consoles, so I thought it would be some kind of clue to figure out what the problem is.

I had a USB in my PS4 but the PS4 didn't see any of my .mp4 or .mkv files. According to their support notes, maybe the USB wasn't able to fit into the recessed slot all the way. The orange light was glowing but it still didn't see any of my data. There are only two USB inputs and they are both deep in the front so any thumb drive that would fit would have to be really thin and small.

Really terrible design flaw that is probably going to keep me on PS3 for media viewing for the indefinite future. Plus, PS3 has dat first party bluetooth remote.

With how i currently have things set up, my PS3 will fill the rear speakers even for media with 2 channel audio. But when i tried playing it on the PS4 a while back the audio only came from the front speakers. Is there anyway to get it to have the same affect or is this not an issue anymore?

So why hasn't Sony done this? Any ideas? Is it for security?
Yup. There is no DTCP DRM or embedded DRM that Netflix can use, no filter that checks every file and encrypts all commercial media. No automatic encryption APIs that ooVoo can use. The PS4 DLNA player has no DRM!

Because the PS4 and PS3 for that matter, have hard disks and USB and LAN ports which could be used to copy media...it will be fairly locked down until Playready is implemented. After that, movies input via LAN from a network tuner or USB tuner will be encrypted (OTT from Netflix etc. is already encrypted) and playable only on the domain authorized. You will be able to move and store the encrypted movies anywhere you want but they will only play on authorized platforms in your home and in some cases outside the home on the same authorized platform(s).

Until DRM is in the PS3 and PS4 we also won't get Vidipath, Miracast, Network and USB Tuner, ooVoo (because two features require DRM and there is a possibility that someone could video chat while the 720P camera is pointing at a TV playing a commercial movie), 4K blu-ray and digital bridge and a ton of media sharing features including second screen features.

For example, Netflix movies could be downloaded Non-Real-Time and played back later on any DRM certified device in the home.

Timing: It doesn't look like DRM is coming with Firmware 3.0 mid to late September....possibly October 27 or later with Firmware 4.0?.

So why was I able to download videos to my PS3? And why can't I watch some videos on my PS4 on the internet, yet I can on my PS3?

Is there no Flash application in the PS4 at all?

The PS3 had Flash, Marlin DRM and DTCP-IP DRM for DLNA streaming and supported RVU; I.E. it had some DRM but an application like Netflix embedded their DRM in the APP it'self just as Netflix does on the PS4. The PS4 DRM will be Playready 3.0 level and after it's implemented, Sony can support what Playready supports for DRM rules. You can store movies on USB external and Network drives. Then it's about keeping the PS4 proof against idiots deleting or changing OS files.

Hmm, something interesting I just found out, I guess it's a partial solution. Some mkv files seem to work fine (both subtitles and the ability to fast forward/rewind), others don't. I just tested it, played a different mkv with subs and was able to fast forward and rewind on my XB1. Lately, all the mkv videos I have been streaming have been unable to do both, so I assumed that I was having a technical issue.

But there's still something not right. Even with those problem mkvs that don't work on my consoles (btw, if I play them on my computer they work fine) they work as intended on my Sony TV. They look more like close captioning (white litters in a black box) opposed to the more detailed subs that the video normally plays on my PC and console though.

I really have no idea what's going on here. Can anyone explain? Thanks!

Not all MKVs are created equal, it is just a container. When a device says it "supports MKV" that means it supports the container itself, not every possibility of video/audio/subtitle contained within.

I would suggest taking a video that works and one that doesn't, running both through Media Info, and look at the embedded video/audio/subtitle formats to see what the difference is.

Here is the problem mkv and here is the mkv that works fine. Seems as if the problem mkv uses a ttf file, whereas the working mkv doesn't give me any information on subs (is it becauase they are hardcoded?). Also format version seems to differ, if it matters. Can you spot the reason from looking at this? Thanks a lot!

Edit: Also looked in MKVExtractGUI, problem mkv and working mkv.

Edit 2: Noticed some differences with the subtitles themselves on the Sony TV. For the problem mkv, it looks like your typical close captioning on tv (as I mentioned earlier, white letters in a black but transparent box), which I can turn on and off by pressing the CC/Subtitles button on my remote. On the working mkv, it looks like it was using SSA/ASS subtitles because no black box behind the letters, it was formatted better, and the font was bigger and easier to read. I was not able to turn these subtitles on and off with the button on my remote, it said it wasn't available so that means it's probably hardcoded.

Knowing all this, I think I have an idea, but I just want to make sure. Do consoles only support mkvs with subtitles hardcoded into the video? The only thing I don't understand is why UMS acted the way it did, showing subtitles but not letting me fast forward/rewind. (Also it showed the time for the video as x/0.00)

Thanks a lot for the help!

It might be a problem with ASS/SSA subtitles. You can try opening the subtitles with Aegisub and exporting it to SRT then try using that.

Is the reason I'm unable to play .mkv files cause I'm still trying to use PS3 Media Server? Or is it the actual file I'm trying to use?

put a mkv file in my video folder on my pc.
ps4 says there are no videos.

any one an idea?

Try running Universial Media Server in the background on your pc. Add your video folders directory and the Media Player app will recognize it as a source after a few seconds when it loads.

PS3 Media Server is too old and not supported anymore.

Apologies about the necro bump, but i wasn't sure whether my issue warrants opening a new thread, so i'll just use this one for the time being.

I'm having massive problems using DLNA on my PS4. Since the media player app got added DLNA has been working on and off for long periods of time. I'm mostly using Universal Media Server to stream content from my Windows 10 PC to my consoles (PS3 & PS4) and streaming to my PS3 has worked like a charm for as long as i remember. Just recently i somehow managed to get it working again on PS4 by fiddling around in my firewall settings (tbh i'm not quite sure what i did though). It was fine for a month or so, when it stopped working again overnight. The only thing i did was disconnect my PS4 to take it to a friend for a gaming session, which i do on a weekly basis and it never caused any problems before. The next day i noticed that the PS4 media player app wouldn't recognize the media server software running on my PC anymore. I looked into the network & internet settings on my PC to see if file sharing is enabled for all devices and it was. I also checked my PS4's MAC adress to confirm that it was still part of the homegroup, which it was. I tried turning my firewall off, which proved fruitless. I thought maybe it's the fault of the server software, so i installed a new one (Media Go), which instantly worked with my PS3, but was a no show on PS4 once again. Having exhausted my limited knowledge, i figured that maybe removing the PS4 from the homegroup and readding it might help, but after i did that it never reappeared at all. It's been a week since then and the PS4 still doesn't show up as an "unknown device" in my local network. Leaving the homegroup with my PC and setting up a new one didn't do anything either. I should add that the internet connectivity of my PS4 is otherwise completely fine.

tl, dr:

- DLNA streaming on PS4 worked on and off since the media player got added
- meanwhile never had any problemđs using DLNA on PS3 with a number of server software (Universal media server, PS3 Media Server, Media Go)
- file sharing for all devices on local network is enabled, turning firewall off didn't do anything
- removed PS4 from homegroup in W10 in the hope that re-adding it will solve the issue, but after a week it still doesn't get recognized at all
- left the homegroup and created a new one, still no recognized PS4

I know some of you might recommend Plex, but i just want to get DLNA working again. Any tips about how to get the PS4 recognized by the local network again?
