Yes, yes, and yes. Now I just need a goddamn media remote, and I can finally put my PS3 out to pasture.

I'm not having any luck with this stuff. I've used Plex to stream content to my tablet for a while now, but when I try to get the PS4 Media Player to play something via the same Plex media server it either A) stutters to an unwatchable degree or B) claims the file is unplayable.

I've just tried Universal Media Server on my PC, and once again it works immediately and perfectly on my tablet, but stutters or fails to play on the PS4.

Don't suppose anyone has any ideas?

It's a bit iffy to be honest.

mp4s didn't work, in the top level usb drive directory. they magically appeared and worked after i stuck them inside a mp4s folder.

i still can't get it to ''see'' the mp3s i have on it, despite me moving them around folders.

I'm excited for this. I wonder how thorough the codecs are?
My 2014 Bravia TV has pretty great media support, but it still falls over on a few codecs.

Strangely, my PS3 is still my player of choice when it comes to DVDs and Blu Rays. This is compounded by the fact that PS4 can sometimes be tied up by having a game in rest mode, and the drive slot is hogged by Bloodborne.

Did you enable the 'Enable HDMI Device Link'? Most TV remotes work pretty great with the PS4 (and PS3). My PS3 remote lives in a drawer, because I just use the remote from my TV to control it.

Did you put your audio in a folder named music?

Well, its about time Sony. Good job finally getting this done. .mkv + AC3 is very nice. Implement subtitle support & DTS & the PS4 will be the perfect media center. Depending on how smooth this is & how wide the .mkv support is I might start using my PS4s as my media centers instead of my Xbones. This can only help future PS4 sales as well. I know quite a few people who went Xbone in the last few months bc up to this point its been the superior media center. This will equalize things in that area. I'm expecting issues that'll need to be smoothed over via updates...but gotta hand it to Sony...better late than never!

MKV is, or will be, a standard container used by HTML5 and the 4K digital bridge. One of the options for the digital bridge is a 100% copy of the 1080P blu-ray disk into a MKV container which will be playable on platforms that comply with DRM standards and have Java....which is what is planned for ATSC 2.0 and HbbTV platforms which support XTV.

This has been discussed on NeoGAF before but NeoGAF is so large with so many threads that this kind of information gets lost. 4K blu-ray player support by the current versions of the XB1 and PS4 was all but proved on NeoGAF nearly 6 months before the Forbes article claimed Netflix was saying only the 2015 version would support it.

Last week a slide appeared with proof the XB1 has HEVC support for both decoding and encoding. Previous hardware breakdowns of the XB1 have it using Cadense IP for the HDMI port with the same hardware able to support Display port which proves the clock can support HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 using IP similar to Xtensa processors. All blu-ray drives after 2012 can support three layers and the Panasonic tweak which ups a layer from 25 to 33 GB each.

NeoGAF is not presenting it'self to easily allow Google searches by writers of articles or the writers are extremely lazy and ignorant.

What I find more interesting is that the Plex DLNA client app using WebMAF (APIs supported by the PS4 webkit native libraries) is about 40 MB and this DLNA/Player is 500 MB.

works really well with Plex

But raspberry pi2 is still better :p

DTS is not likely since it would require license fees

Excellent information. Thanks for the knowledge.

Ok true dream has come true, I can now SCRUB through a streaming 1080p .mkv file on my quiet PS4 without problems and audio stays in sync !

That is it PS3 you have serviced me very well EVERY SINGLE DAY (seriously use it every day to stream stuff off my home server).

Since June 12, 2008 (Day MGS4 came out).

But now its time for your current gen to take over!
