Hahaha. Smooth filter uglyness is better looking than pixels? Nicely done! :lol

Oh what a trainwreck this thread is.

Evidently an ugly filter applied to older sprite which get blown up to TV resolutions is better (or possibly equal to) than new, higher colour sprites that are made to look fantastic at their native resolutions since the screen is fixed. Let's not even touch frames of animation or background colour depth.

Oh what a trainwreck this thread is.

Princess Peach is still going to rock though.

I dunno, I haven't been paying much attention to portables (I do plan to get a PSP eventually, though). I was under the impression that the DS was roughly N64 level in power, so why would this even be an issue? Lack of CD storage and screen resolution still make it inferior to consoles from that era, though. But but but...TWO screens.
DS outclasses all of the 32bit machines in terms of 3D performance, and everything but possibly Saturn in terms of 2D performance. It's also got more RAM than any of those machines and 3DM media alleviates most of the trditionally inherent problems with cartridges. We're already seeing 64MB DS games sold for $19.99 new (GuruGuru Naget) and the capacities are basically doubling every 6-8 months. By 2008 we'll probably see 1GB+ DS cards as the norm, this media is poised to exceed CD-ROM's capacity ceiling sooner or later.

WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN

I never heard of this Peach game until right now. WHERE DID THE ROCK I WAS LIVING IN GO.

No, seriously. When was this announced?

Maybe in specs, but we haven't really seen real games proving this (okay maybe Mario 64 DS and...?).
Show a launch period PS1/N64/Saturn game that looks better than Mario 64 DS or Feel the Magic.

I can't believe how incredibly fun this game looks. If it's a good length I'll be forced to buy a DS for it and Kirby.

WHEN DOES IT COME OUT?

I rather play all 2D games on a console as those games were designed to be displayed on a TV set and not on PC monitors (nor 40-50'' HDTV's... I fear about NES games on such a panel :(), but I like the option of having such filters in the case the image gets pixellated. In a PC emulator, say ZSNES, without any filter, the quality of the image is not the quality you get while playing the game on TV as it looks quite more pixellated.

For SNES and NES games or Genesis/MegaDrive/etc..., even ported to newer consoles, I would reccomend keeping a 14-20'' TV in the house to play them as they were intended to and at the same time BITCHING at Capcom to finally draw sprite's with 640x480 resolution in mind... at least ;).

Well as far as 3D is concerned. Only Nintendo has really been creating games that look N64/Above N64 quality 3D. Super Mario 64DS, Mario Kart DS, New Super Mario Bros DS, Metroid Prime Hunters and Animal Crossing. As for the other DS games, I mean it is probably a mix of low-budget stuff and GBA engines being reused. Why is this happening? Well the developers making PSP games were for the most part making PS2 games, while most of the DS developers were previously making GBA games.

Quite a difference in the team sizes, experience, and engines being used.

I think the game looks fantastic. I just hope it ain't overly easy (and hope it doesn't have an overly girly box :lol ). There is one pretty good reason why games like this should be made for DS instead of GBA. The GBA has absolutly shit sound! The GBA was ruined because of the lack of decent sound IMO.

I think nintendo should use artwork like this for this game, and every other mario game from now on

Golden Sun 1 & 2 would like to say "hi"

So Mario is in jail, and Peach has to save him? Ok.

And is that one layer of parallax? Let's hope not.

Ugly filter? :lol :lol Whatever. And with a resolution as low as what we're talking about here, color depth is hardly a huge deal.

Oh really? What's the biggest cart out now?

yes, those layers ruin the look of the game, as someone already said, pixel sprites for the win

3DM actually has 256 Megabyte carts at this time. The largest DS game through about June was 64MB. No word on how big any of the releases in the last 5 months or so have been.

But the N64 maximum was 64MB, and there's a lot of 1st generation DS games that are that size.

No. When you can count the number of pixels on screen (or at least Rain Man can), you know there's a problem.

According to that poster, DS has been around long enough for the capacity to double at least once, even twice. So has it?

What about Viewtiful Joe, ASH, Mario Basketball, and Final Fantasy III?
Maybe even Spyro and Super Monkey Ball could hit early N64-level quality since they're still being worked on.

Yes. Some of last year's releases:
Zoo Keeper (Ignition Entertainment/Success) = 8MB 3DM + 8KB EEPROM
Spider-Man 2 (Activision/Vicarious Visions) = 16MB 3DM + 0.5KB EEPROM
Super Mario 64 DS (Nintendo) = 16MB 3DM + 8KB EEPROM
Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits (Namco) = 16MB 3DM + 8KB EEPROM

Some more recent releases:
64MB 3DM + 8KB EEPROM
-Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (Konami)
-Jump Super Stars (Nintendo/Ganbarion)
-Kirby: Canvas Curse (Nintendo/HAL Laboratory)
-Meteos (Nintendo/Bandai/Q Entertainment)
-Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan (Nintendo/iNiS)
-Tennis no Ouji-Sama 2005: Crystal Drive (Konami)
-Yu-Gi-OH! Nightmare Troubadour (Konami)

64MB 3DM + 250KB EEPROM
-Guru Guru Nagetto (Success/BeeWorks)
-Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (Ubisoft/Gameloft)

From 8 and 16mb to 64mb now. (so four to eight times) Of course there are still games with small cart sizes, but that's the choice of the developers.
Edit: Thanks to jarrod for the numbers.

I'd say Square Enix, Sonic Team and Clover Studio are all making great looking 3D titles also. Just as good as the best from EAD and NST actually.

The technology doubles, though at launch the largest DS card was 32MB. If a tiny, budget publisher like Ignition can afford to release a 64MB game with a 250KB EEPROM for just $19.99 though, I'd suspect larger card sizes are probably available right now.

Are...you guys arguing in a PRINCESS PEACH thread? WTF is wrong with you people?? Do you have souls?
