But yeah I don't think people actually use usenet anymore for anything other than those things. If there are still active discussion groups though, list 'em up because it'd be kinda interesting to check them out.

I will try to actually be helpful and say it used to be great, but now days there really is no need to get into it if you aren't already.

I mean, the only reason I haven't used Usenets already is because you usually have to get a subscription service. Torrents are just easier.

Usenet still works for me. Particularly Bintube. $11 a month for unlimited data @ great speeds (pushed 100mbit myself) and very high retention (646 days currently). Also SSL.

With this and the Limewire thread, I'm beginning to worry that the mods stopped caring about piracy.
Unless you have a really, really fast connection (30Mbps+) try Astraweb, as it is a lot cheaper.
You need a client (alt.binz is a nice free one, though if you pay you get a updated versions which fix bugs and are generally better or just pay for a good one). If you have a mac, sadly I can't recommend one as I don't use usenet on my mac. Than, instead of going to groups, you go to an indexing website (some cost money, some are free) or a post search site and search for what you want. No need to actually bother with downloading group headlines to see what each has as that can take weeks with the amount of groups.
Also, you will need software like HJsplit as some things, for good knows what reason, aren't encoded into rar files.
In case you are actually thinking about not getting the index site way, prepare to get frustrated when you inevitably download a password protected file with no way to guess the password. There is really no reason to not use an indexing site.
And always, always, use SSL. Don't forget to change the ports as the default ones aren't the SSL ones.
