New Trailer for FFXVI is up

dude. this looks damn good, i'm definitely excited for this. with more i see, the better it gets. i know a different director and team, but this definitely looking like a new, inspired way for the franchise.

Theme and its style is pretty much classic Final Fantasy before FFVII.

Dan out here saving me all dat time with a post lol

I don't even see how anyone would say this doesn't fit FF, this is pretty fucking standard FF in regards to art direction, the iconography of that art direction from even the color themes. This literally is by the book FF in regards to art and those that say otherwise are not even artist that can even support said view with any real proof actually using art itself to point out some shit.

From the chocobos, to the crystals shit...this is deep FF art standard stuff. Even the dark tone, fuck they going to tell me? Dark colors never existed in FF before? Series never had night time? lol

the actual fuck? lol

Graphics seem decent but the art directions is God awful. It looks like a ps3 game art direction wise
I'd say it simply looks too clean, perfect skin boy band characters everywhere, not enough crap in the world. Comes with the JRPG genre I guess but some FROM grittiness would do wonders for the whole game I think.

Honestly I'm just glad they made a combat system that isn't turn based this time.
Wanted to get into this series coz of the world building, aesthetics and even the story, but the combat systems usually were a turn off.
Also doesn't appear to have any forced diversity so I'm game.

The more technology has advanced to let Square realize the artistic vision, the less interested I get I've become in their games.

how can its art style look like a PS3 game? that makes zero sense. when people talk about a game's art style they talking about its art, not its tech.
Like lokk at the characters .look at the designs .it looks like ps3 level .we are ow in phot scan tech and their games look like ps3 with better lighting

You are joking right? I actually like the fact this game doesn't use scan face, like in Forspoken which to me huge turn off.

It looks ugly like ps3 level bad maybe even ps2

You just wanted more "realistic" looking character models but majority of Final Fantasy games always had more stylize models.

If thats to you makes it look like "PS2" game then I take that over scan face any day.

I already made peace with the fact SE will no longer makes turn based for mainline FF, thats fine SE still makes other games that are turn based combat but If mainline FF going towards action combat then I want proper one.

And so far FFXVI's combat is looking good.

True, but I think Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler to a lessor extent will be that for them going forward.

Bravely Default literally started development as the sequel to the DS game FF The Four Heros Of Light, merely changing the name very much means their intention is to have Bravely Default and Octopath likely just be the turned based titles they put out, so I think its sorta moot as the main goal should be for a turned based title by Square, none of those series continue off of each other, thus naming thing is kinda moot tbh.

As said I think it's the genre. What JRPG goes past this clean style?
But whatever they lost me anyway when they started competing with realtime action games, haven't finished a FF since 13 🤐

I'm not a FF guy, but the trailer was pretty great. Hope it turns out to be a good game for those interested.

Ah yes, they are all perfectly clean until when they clearly and obviously aren't in the trailer. Do you really expect nobles to be covered in dirt and grime 24/7?

This looks like its right up my alley. The overall design of this game looks good, not that Nomura shit. XIV was my fave in a long ass time, since XII to be precise.

The combat being real time, FF has been like that for a while now. If its good, its good. No matter what kind of battle system they throw at you.

Not a fan of the return to pure fantasy.

I hope FF17 has a better mix of scifi and Fantasy.

SFO and FFXIV are the two most recent entire that have that mix of scifi and fantasy. Given we have had almost nothing *but* sci-fi and fantasy, it is nice to have a pure fantasy for once - but who knows what the final product will give us.

It obviously looks generationaloy better but it reminds me of soul caliber graphics when I saw them for the first time. Super clean character models....

The soul still burns!...I think it actually looks good and I welcome that nostalgic feeling.

I've got to say, I'm not a fan of all these exaggerated whirls and particle effects every time the character swings his sword. That's one of these things I never liked in japanese games in general; even fighting games like SF do it, with sparks and splashes of color smeared over the screen during every hit. Really annoying and distracting imo. But it's especially over the top here; even FF15 didn't have that much shit going on.

for the complaint about how 'dull' the game looks like due to the barren land and other stuff, perhaps this is due to storyline reason?

in the trailer it is told that the aether is running out and the world is dying and other stuff. this lead to land become 'lifeless' and because of that kingdoms around the world end up fighting over crystal possession. perhaps this is the 'blight' that mentioned in the game?

this concept also existed in FFXIV. in Shadowbringers the land is drying out of aether and characters in the story quest attempted to 'revived' back the land by trying to bring back various element of aether into the land by summoning primals.

..looking back here, there is various different element of Eikon in XVI :goog_unsure:

I'd like to play it, unless they decide to bring it to Steam 2 years too late, in which case my interest will have waned and I'll ignore it, just like I did with FF7R.

This 100%. They should add a slider in the options.

I don't expect anything, it's just my reaction to the trailer, and as said it probably goes for the whole genre. Are there gritty JRPGs?
I don't think it looks like a PS3 game but for me there is a lack of grittiness here, on everything, it's the style, the skin, beard, hair, clothes and armour, ground, castles, ruins, everything just looks too tidy.

I'm personally of the opinion that we've had a lot of FF games that are top tier graphically but lacking in so many other areas

FFXVI is flipping the script, graphics addressed after the fundamentals

Who looks like someone from a boy band in this game aside from young Clive? Almost every guy in this game seems to have facial hair and is ripped.

Also I'm not sure why "perfect skin" is a complaint. The characters have visible pores up close for sure. Do you want the characters to have eczema? Acne scars? A lazy eye?

Trailer looks fucking incredible! And i'm very happy with the return to medieval fantasy, the best FF's used that setting.

As for gameplay, it looks really sick but i'm a bit worried about it's depth. I know DMC5 combat director is doing this but FF is supposed to have much more broad appeal than DMC, wonder if they're gonna "dumb things down" a bit because of it.

I wish turn-based fanatics could realize how absolutely silly they sound saying stuff like this. And also this post is confusing to me. You could pose some (bad) arguments for XII and XV but XIII blatantly has an ATB battle system with no movement in combat just like older FF titles. But XII and XV are absolutely JRPG's too.

XII maybe yes, but XV is absolutely not a JRPG - it's an open world 3rd person character action game, which couldn't be more different to a JRPG.
And what do you mean by "turn-based fanantics"? If the Doom franchise turned into a Strategy RPG all of a sudden and people complained about it, would you call these people "first-person-shooter fanatics" also?

is that Leviathan?

both Pheonix and Ifrit is not there which is probably for a reason? but for Ifrit it makesense that the second Eikon of fire is something that should not appear at first place.

You should never give modern Squeenix the benefit of the doubt, but after watching that trailer there's at least a possibility for this to be good.

Likely to be a soulless hack writing experience under a polished exterior though

Not sure why square likes making so many of their male characters look like women
Have you seen how men in Asia look like?

I agree for how much the Japanese developers seem to ponder to Western markets they as sure not listening when it comes to character design and story tropes.

Written by a Veteran who's been with SQ since 1995 and worked with Yasumi Matsuno on basically all his Square Enix games and then went on to write the XIV expansions A realm reborn and Heavensward. Which depending on who you ask are the best written stories SQE has pumped out in the last 10+ years.

I mean as far as that goes its the best shot you gonna get, especially for this type of setting.
