That's pretty crappy imo...
Some of the textures on the trees are just brutal (however the extent of the world around them might be huge so I dunno).

The animation of the leaves, branches, etc. could also change my opinion.

Underwhelming, I have to say, compared to previous shots from less organic environments. I'm sure better artists will impress when they get their hands on these tools.

Thumbs up.

I think it's pretty impressive overall. Does anyone have any pics of that Rebirth thing to compare? I would think that these would definitely have to be better, considering how old the Rebirth video is now. :)

EDIT: Well.. now there's one posted.. :D

I don't think those trees look good at all.
They look plastic.
I Agree, there's not enough detail on the tree to make it look "real" but it is coming alone very well.

Rebirth is still lots better. it was prerendered CG afterall. doesnt matter that its older-5 years old just about.

Looks like a really good engine with some slightly mediocre art. Some of those shots look amazing.

And yeah.. it is somewhat hard to compare FMV to in-game stuff.. but ah well..

You can download the "Trees of Pangea" demo from their website and try it out yourself. Looks pretty good running @ 1280x960 w/6xAA and 16xAF. Runs like crap with those settings, but at 1024x768 w/ all that turned off it runs 30+fps.

Not only that, but what's with the luminescent bark? Trees glow now? I want something that looks more organic.

The problem with comparing real-time shots to FMV is the resolution and the level of detail. They are just too different to make a proper fair comparison. The level of discernible detail in those screens differ far too much.

I have to agree, these look a bit dissapointing compared to what I remember Elder Scrolls Oblivion looking like. Admittably thats not perfect either, what is?, but this looks very barren and unnatural.

Uhhh... how you like my plastic garden?

All being said the should strictly stick to the sci-fi stuff. No "organic" as in "made of plastic" trees please!

My God, what the fuck is it with you people?

This shit is happening in real-time, not some lame ass tech demo. Besides, these trees are better looking than that Rebirth demo. You wanna talk about "rendered" looking... lolomgshit

Point me to one game, let alone one engine, that could produce vegetation with this much variety and detail, and run it at a decent framerate.

Nice... what's that?

The more realistic graphics look, the more obvious the flaws. While the screenshots are certainly impressive for their technical merits, they're also so advanced that you're going to immediately compare it to a true-world equivalent, and suddenly it's not looking quite so hot. The bark doesn't look like real wood, the leaves looks like jarring paper cut-outs, etc.

This engine is going to do some great things in the hands of imaginative more surreal artists.

As usual,GAF members astound me with their responses :lol

Seriously, this destroys anything else that we've seen in this type of enviornment,I mean c'mon.

You're not supposed to just look at the rock!

My God, look at the scope of whats being done, and all you dopes can do is nitpick.

I think these pics prove how important good art is going to be next gen, which means games will be more expensive because you need to hire better artists, which means the xbox 2 is ruining videogames.

Carmack I am sure is hard at work on something just as amazing :D

Speaking of which, is the Doom 3 engine presently being used for anything other than its expansion pack and Quake 4?

As far as I know, no.

But who knows what secret dealings could be going on.

I remember some people taking "offense" to my comments about Epic's art sucking...I hope this opens their eyes, at least a little bit!

Looks good. A little 'off', but it's probably just a matter of tweaking the lighting conditions.

Oblivion uses the same technology, btw.

Yeah, games are always using still, static shots that give you enough time to take in all the flaws like these shots doOHWAITNOTHEYDON'T.

This'll look... ahem... unreal in the context of a game in motion.

Yeah, they're using it for "Darky McDark's Adventures in Darkland". ;) :P

Seriously, Doom 3 looks awesome in many respects, but the perpetual shroud of darkness quickly irritated me. Conversely, I played Halo 2 for the first time this past weekend on an HDTV and it absolutely floored me with its visuals. Beautiful game with lush, expansive environments.
