Viewtiful Joe Double Trouble was amazing. The game plays and looks just like the GameCube version. I played through the first level and was impressed with the level of graphics and how true to the original the DS version managed to stay. That being said, the plot is completely different.
In the short time I played the game the top screen seemed to only be used to display what was going on in the bottom screen, but zoomed in. While it looked kind of cool, it seemed like a sort of useless function.
Many of the power attacks in the DS version remain the same as the one found in the original, though I saw one of what I would suspect are several touch-screen enabled FX abilities. I wasn’t too impressed with the one I saw, which required you to hold in a trigger and scratch the screen over bad guys. Doing it correctly is supposed to drop rocks on the bad guys’ heads, which in itself is pretty non-sensical. To top it off, I had a lot of trouble getting it to work.
Despite the wanky use of the top screen and the ultra-silly touch-screen-enabled power-ups, it looks like anyone who’s a fan of action games and cel-shading is gonna love this game. The controls were tight, the graphics near identical to the cube version and game play fast and fun.
