Calling all you New Yorkers...

Right, there's a bloody good chance that I'll be visiting the capital of the world in a couple of weeks. Oh yes. So, I ask you, where are the gooood places to go? Cheap record/clothes shops... unknown museums, little cafes - the good stuff! Oh God I can't wait :D

If you want cheap, used CDs, go down to St. Marks Pl. However, do NOT go into the video game store, as it's so overpriced that it makes eBay blush.

As far as museums go, there aren't too many "unknown" ones, but plenty of offbeat, "not art" museums.

There's the MTA's Transit Museum:

Also, the Museum of Sex:

Then you have the American Museum of the Moving Image:

...Which is not to be confused with the Museum of Television and Radio:
http://www.mtr.org/

The New(ish) Rose Center at the American Museum of Natural History is fucking amazing:

And Ellis Island. It's a bit cliche to go there, but it's still a humbling experience:

Not that I have... and I'm a New Yorker... BUT...

Why not just do the typical shit? You know all of yer friends are gonna ask you about them. (I'm in Scotland now and I get asked about them all the time myself)

However... I praise you for being different.

How long is your stay?

Make sure you visit Chinatown at least once.

Chinatown isn't what it used to be and you know it (shame, Little Italy is the same). I can find good (even great) dim-sum in better, cleaner places.

...but if you want CHINATOWN... I can't blame you. Fuck, I do it still too ;)

Well I'm going to check out the usual places too, but I want to taste some real NYC too. I'm going for... don't know yet. Around 8 days hopefully.

Because we demand nice weather - because NYCer's are arrogant bastards who won't accept anything but. ;) You will feel the same once you settle down.

Ice has formed on the windows in my bathroom. I can see my breath in there. Unless I put a towel under my feet, they go completely numb because the floor is frozen. I have to drag a portable heater into my tiny ass bathroom and leave it on for at least half an hour before I dare take a shower. I go to a hotel once a week just so that I can spend more than 3 minutes under warm water.
I have every right to bitch.

Oh dear, I'm off to NYC in just (looks at watch) 10 hours. Better buy a scarf and wooly hat at the airport. :lol

We might be getting a foot or more of snow this weekend, so if you had any plans of leaving on Saturday or Sunday, you should pack a few extra things.

man. yesterday was COOOOOOOOLD. dont forget to check out strands near 14th st and broadway, i believe its the biggest bookstore in the world. they just have piles and piles of books.
as for cafes and restaurants just walk around the west village and soho area, you'll find cafes to your liking. and always check out which restaurants are the busiest, those are usually the best ones. its tough to recommend as there are too many of them.
check out little italy, take pictures of the pretty lights, there are some nice cafes and bakeries there as well.
as for museums, you gotta check out the metropolitan museum of art. its not unknown, in fact world famous, but theres just too much to see in there so you must, and definitely walk around the park right next to it. its pretty big! ;)

I hate the strand. People there are such pretentious asses.
NO YOU ARE A PRETENTIOUS ASS!!!!!!

kidding. but the store is good for pretty much any book, and the books are cheap. too bad its so disorganized. whenever you go, make sure you look as intellectual as possible, unshaven face, messy hair, thin rimmed black glasses, messy clothing, preferrably an overcoat/trenchcoat and a vacant look on your face. they'll leave you alone.
if anyone asks if you need help, mutter "i need a good textbook on fermi-dirac charge carrier statistics....never mind, i'll find it myself, thanx." bump into him on your way in the aisle and keep walking w/o saying sorry.

Go to cha-cha's in little italy. I forget the actual name of the cafe but if you look it up you'll find it. that is, if you like espresso/coffee/etc.

Spent a lot of time in the Met (High School projects). Just an awesome museum with an amazing Egyptian section. I'm a lush for Egyptian shit.

(Side note: We put bubble bath in one of the fountains a few years ago [God, has it been 4 years??!!].... they had to shut it off. Funny shit.)

Yeah... sure kid, grow up.
