Ha the black and white fern is color swapped. I can see this is going to go well already.

The Dreamcast one seems quite cool there.

I think a case can be made for and against all of them but I'd be happy with any of those picks. The blue in 4 doesn't look very pleasing though.

Edit: Change my mind, looks fine in the 3d rendering.

The Maori spiral symbol (Koru) looks very distinctive though but perhaps a little plain.

Well I mean I want a flag change so we actually have a different flag from australia and the current one doesn't really represent the country at all

The swirl looks so unofficial. It's an interesting concept, but it looks so cheap like an awkward close-up of a vector image.

I do like the first one. But why not another color + white? Blue & white for example?

The others with the stars are just a detail too much. Outlines? Plz.

#1 is best either way.

Edit: I looked again and why aren't the leaves similar in shape on both sides in #1? Needs some cleaning up.

4 is beautiful, 1 is ok, 2 imo looks like some US presidential election campaign and 3 is just horrible.

This impression is consistent with the 3D renders.

just by looking over all the people reacting in my facebook feed I don't think any of these have much of a chance against our current flag

which is a shame because I wanted it changed but none of these choices are that great. So instead we'll probably just waste a stupid amount of money on two pointless referendums...

Yeah but I mean, it's a pretty arbitrary thing to be occurring right now. A flag change should be significant, like when Prince Zuko cuts his hair in Avatar. It should stand for something. Imagine if John Key said
"AYO! We're gonna make state highway 1 a solar roadway and fuck the TPPA, you guys were right! Let's be clean and green like we pretend we are!" and then changed the flag. It'd be like the maddest mic drop and everyone would feel a sense of national relevance at least and potentially a sense of identity for real. Instead it's like
"Yo! Vote on the flag hahaha you guys like this shit right?" [ASIDE] "Fools... while you squabble over this inconsequential riff-raff my boner grows larger by the day.... Soon I will have all the riches in the World, this sinking ship be damned... ahehe...AHAHAHA.... AAAAHHHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Black is the sporting colour, used in just about every national sport team.

The fern is a NZ symbol going way back, used from sports to military symbols in WW1 and WW2.

The frond is cool but man nobody's ever going to get the number / orientation of the blades right. Even the curve is tough, people don't know about points of inflection. Not very iconic.

Well 2 looks way too political with the red, white, and blue. 4 is alright but I don't really like the black on it

disagree. 1 is the boldest choice, and good flag craft, if we're going by the old method of recognizing it at a distance on a ship.

Canadian flag has a lot of points too but it's not really an issue.

The koru (Māori for "loop") is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond and symbolizing new life, growth, strength and peace. It is an integral symbol in Māori art, carving and tattoos.

I quite like the koru symbolism but fuck having a black and white flag

Of those only Silver Fern (red white and blue) made the cut (#2 in the OP)... but I'm starting to come around to the Black and White Fern (#1 above), simple and unique.

I thought it's less about that colonial heritage than not wanting to be confused/associated with Australia.
