Next Gen Consoles Expected for 2027 by Supermassive Games / Nordisk

According to a report from Insider Gaming, Blade Runner: Time to Live entered pre-production in September 2024 and was shelved sometime before March 2025. The game, budgeted at $45 million (including a juicy $9 million set aside for top-tier mocap and acting talent), was aiming for a September 2027 release. That's a perfectly reasonable window for a single-player, 10–12 hour prestige adventure… and then comes the kicker.

The planned platforms? PC. PS5. Xbox Series X/S. But also—wait for it—"Gen 10 Xbox and PlayStation systems."

No one throws "Gen 10" around lightly. Studios don't just slap imaginary consoles onto a production document unless they've got at least some confidence in the roadmap. So how would Supermassive know what Sony and Microsoft are doing three years down the line?

One possible answer: because someone told them.

Supermassive's parent company, Nordisk, has a longstanding and very cozy relationship with Sony. On its own website, Nordisk proudly refers to itself as the Nordic home of PlayStation, handling everything from sales to marketing to logistics. They've been in the trenches with Sony through five console launches—and odds are they're already prepping for number six.

That tracks with recent reports that Sony's collaboration with AMD on the PS6 chip is already deep into development. According to reputable leaker KeplerL2, the SoC design is complete, and the project is nearing its tapeout phase—a key milestone that usually occurs about two years before retail release. Translation? 2027 is right on schedule.

They did barely anything with ps5 or series x. A handful of "next gen" games. And what about ps5 pro?

The new switch is just about to release but it won't push a new generation of console gaming either (of course, as a hybrid it breaks all records).

So why do we need a new generation? The only next gen feature I can imagine at this point is AI and that's sure to be a mixed bag.

I think we should skip next gen tbh.

new consoles have been coming out like clockwork every 6 or so years.. so 2027 is right on the money for PS5. New Xbox will likely drop sooner in 2026 tbh.

But I feel like this gen is only 45% done in terms of the quantity and quality of games we've seen. So many studios have yet to even release their first game this gen. Looking at you ND, R*...

So why do we need a new generation?

Imagine selling (or trying to) you a console for $999. Games for Nintendo-approved $80-90. Extra tier of your favorite subscription services with extra "next gen" charge applies.

Maybe I'm just getting old or something, but I'd like to see next-gen consoles focus more on lower power consumption and efficiency vs raw performance. Do we really need graphics to be better than PS5 Pro? I would argue we've reached a point where it's become difficult to see a clear difference in graphics across console generations in general. Can they make something that's more performant than a PS5 Pro but far more energy efficient and runs cooler and quieter? I would love to see that. I think advances in AI up-scaling and even faster storage than we have in consoles now can also continue to impress, as well. Innovate on the controller. Double down on 3D audio.

But make a tiny, quiet console that doesn't draw that much power, and is more performant than a PS5 Pro. That would be my ultimate console. Peak.

I can definitely see what you're saying, and I agree that a smaller, more efficient console would be great, especially for people who care about thermals, noise, and energy use.

But realistically, I think that kind of product would be really hard to sell to the broader market. Most people just don't pay much attention to power consumption or efficiency, they're more focused on flashy performance gains, resolution numbers, or frame rates. It's a niche concern, even if it should matter more

Honestly, I just don't see it. You can look at a 5090 and see that it isn't going to deliver any new gameplay that a 3090 isn't.

When new consoles come, they'll need to be more than just increases in silicon or they're going to struggle with the price out of the gates.

This generation has lead to a lot of negativity because it didn't really bring anything new.

PS1/Saturn/N64 brought 3d gaming
PS2/Xbox brought online gaming
PS3/X360 brought digital libraries and HD gaming

We haven't really seen much chance since. What do we have 4K gaming? Okay...

Sony and Microsoft need to look for a better hook than just a meager improvement in graphics.

Yes

I would argue we've reached a point where it's become difficult to see a clear difference in graphics across console generations in general.

That's because they have been limiting power, and the move to push for 60 fps. The current gen consoles simply aren't powerful enough to do 60 fps and get that next gen fidelity.

But with GAAS taking over, it almost doesn't matter.

If PC Gamers are going to buy so many 5090s at $2-3K such that the inventory is hard to find then console makers might as well get in on that gravy train and sell exponentially more than that at $799 a pop. All of the games will run on PS5 until 2030 anyway to make sure they don't lose any software sales.

I think 4K/120fps performance modes will be the next thing, with AI upscaling and frame generation making it possible.

I still thinking Next Box is coming in 2026
Absolutely not. I do think Microsoft is cooking something this time that will make it a more interesting proposition than a new PS.

What's even the point of PS when all their games are on PC anyway?

Microsoft has great value with GP and day 1 releases and will probably do something with cloud making gaming cheaper and more easily accessible for the masses.

They haven't done anything next-gen this generation except for Silent Hill 2 Remake. I bet not even 50 percent of the PS5's power has been used.

There's no point in releasing a next-gen console until 2029.

I don't think we'll see a new home console before 2028 from playstation. A handheld is possible sooner.

MS will definitely launch 2027 or earlier, if they don't outright cancel it.

Throw tomatoes and eggs my way( well maybe not eggs, too expensive) but this gen has inspired ZERO motivation for me to give a single fuck about the next generation of consoles. ZERO.

Holiday 2027 is definitely possible for PS6. That's on the verge of 2028 when you think about it. We're not even halfway into 2025 yet, so it will feel about right once we get into that year.

GPUs are coming out annually, but most of the time no one has an issue with those...but a new Console coming around every 6-7 years is an issue for many which I find funny at times, regardless if the current hardware isn't reaching full potential yet.

I despised how long the PS3/360 cycle lasted. So much changed in consumer electronics and social media during that cycle that the consoles were painful to use years before PS4/Xbox One launched. I don't mind shorter cycles.

PS5 Pro being out there feels weird now, but I see it for the Series X. The gap between PS5 and PS5 Pro doesn't feel that big, but the PS5 Pro makes the Series X look aged.

Microsoft can't lock down it's next console by limiting basic expected utility. If it won't allow users to install off the shelf internal NVMe SSDs, it's got to go the USB Gen 3.2 2x2 route. Next console also needs UAC2 support, Wifi 6e, (Wifi 7 standard still hasn't been finalized), and Bluetooth 5.x.

And Sony needs to figure out the whole USB situation they got going on. Some ports work better than others for certain things on PS5/PS5 Pro. It's weird and confusing.

I'd love to see multigigabit Ethernet for all new consoles too, but that might still be a reach in terms of component expense.

Edit: I don't expect a bump to PCIe 5.0. Component expense will be too high. PCIe 4.0 will be fine at launch with Pro versions maybe seeing the upgrade.

It doesn't mean anything, they were planning a multiplatform release. They were building the game in a way that allowed them to release a next Gen update whenever that was ready, shooting for a much higher ceiling of visuals.
There are many games in development right now targeting the generation beyond PS5. That doesn't mean they have a secret release date.

Unless they have some killer software to go with it, I don't see the point. I don't think the current Gen has delivered much more than faster loading.

People need to get over this PC load of tosh.... I never remember in the PD1 era people saying you don't need a PS1 its best games on the PC anyway and look better when you had the likes of FF7, Tomb Raider, RE, Metal Gear Soild on the PC and back in those days you also had SONY Europe bringing its games out on the PC. Sony bringing games out on the PC isn't going to hurt their console side at all

PC and consoles are not the same, and neither are their gamers. You have people like me who will only game on consoles, and you'll have people on the PC side who wouldn't lower themself's to game on a console.
No different from the old 16-bit micro days of the Amiga, ST and the 16-bit consoles

The point is that Sony isn't even bringing games to PS. Instead of rehashing old games.

It's sad. Whether your on PC or PS.

If it was about "greed" they would milk this gen as long as possible. These companies lose money on consoles, usually until the end of the generation when they implement die shrinks and can cut back on costs and shipping. Plus, new generations, for Sony and Nintendo, are risky. So you're dead wrong.

As for OP, just because they are planning on releasing a current gen title in 2027 and planning for next gen port, doesn't mean 2028 for next gen consoles. Everything indicates 2027 for XBOX and 2028 for PlayStation. I would love for it to be 2026/2027, but that seems unlikely.

I wouldn't class the likes of R&C, Returnal, God of War, Sackboy 4 as just old rehashes TBH.

People need to get a little grip sometimes. It be like PC gamers back in the 90's saying they don't need PC anymore because all their good games are coming out on the consoles

Still beating the usual war drum i see 😁

Shit man, I must have played Stellar blade, BM Wukong, FF rebirth, FF 16, Silent hill 2RE and Astrobot amongst others on my imaginary PS5 - but i forget, only Xbox has games am I right ?

Again, you can't make this shit up, it's always the usual song and dance with the likes of you.

4 RPG, 1 remake and a platform game. Only 1 of them is 1st party.

I upgraded to PS5 Pro w/ disc drive because I feel like it'll be my last console so I want to get the best performance.

If I were to go in for PS6, I would be waiting for the mid gen refresh.

Those games are years old man.
And the likes of Doom, Duke Nukem 3D were over a year old when they came to consoles, did it really matter?

I loved the fact that PC games were coming out on the consoles way back in the Mega Drive days with the likes Rise Of the Dragon, Snacther, Star Flight Ect,ect

So, I suppose MS has 0 since they've basically brought every company up ? Is that what you're saying ?
Let me guess, Ninja Gaiden 4 is also going to be "MS 1st party", correct ?

Told another guy the other day, you people just can't seem to be able to take the L, it's always this or that 😉

Also : you said the other day that you're not "warring" and yet, almost every post of yours is warring, how does that work ?

Honestly, I just don't see it. You can look at a 5090 and see that it isn't going to deliver any new gameplay that a 3090 isn't.

You already forgot about the amazing features the DualSense controller has!?!?!?
People take everything for granted these days.

I am not talking about Microsoft or doing ANY comparisons. That's on you. I own all consoles and Sony just has NO new games. I don't give a flying F about games released 5 years ago or rehashed remasters. Where are the games?

And when we do do comparisons, Microsoft actually has games. Lots of them. And good ones. And on GP. Day 1.

I always get supermassive and supergiant games confused.

Got excited for a minute. Didn't all the dark anthology games besides until dawn flop? But they also have the until dawn movie with Sony so they are tight together.

Don't really feel the need for a new Playstation though.

So PS5 Slim Pro?

LOL, lmao even

You just can't be helped at this point man, the lack of self awareness is just too strong - just like the literal biblepass shilling (bolded for effect).
