Idk, all this feels like a completely manufactured concern. Like i wrote in another thread;
You will probably encounter other hardware issues long before this. In PS4s case it will be thermal paste drying up or HDD crashing. The PS5 will probably have a way longer lifespan when it comes to that though so it may become an issue in a decade or more. All this is such hyperbole.
Also, isnt this issue solved by simply replacing the battery and boot up with an internet connection? Thats my interpretation at least

Right now there is no native PS5 game limited to 30fps;
was the last, but got patched. On Series X/S there is still The Medium.

It affects you in the way that you have to take off the warranty seals and strip the console down to replace the battery. I had some problems finding the right sized security Torx screwdriver, but in the end I am convinced that the hardware will fail earlier than the CMOS battery runs out unless you do exactly that; strip the console down for cleaning and replace thermal compound.
Edit: Its not very hard either if you take some care. The security torx are only on the back, from there on its regular phillips screws. The hardest part was pulling off the bottom case of the console but if one simply follows model corresponding ifixit guides I think anyone with some common sense can do it in an hour or so.

How does Xbox One / Series handle these issues? Do they have a time bomb, too?
AFAIK if you stay offline on a Xbox, you wont get any achievements. (one of the reasons we need that battery for the PS console, if I understood it correctly)
Disc games should run as long it is a full game on disc where we dont need to download a Day One patch to make it work.
And what about Nintendo with Wii U and Switch (can the Switch even be used without any kind of batteries, just play on TV with the Dock?)

Xbox Series games discs have a one-time online activation.
To be clear, it just enables access to the game with a disc for that account. It is not DRM for discs. Discs are not uniquely assigned.

On the One, it was planned to be actual DRM, on the Series, it is part of Smart Delivery.
The Series X requires a stable internet connection for its first boot.

The issue is that if the servers for activations are taken offline then you are fucked. The concern has come about cause Sony are killing the old stores, if this includes the servers for activation then there is nothing that you can do.

On a positive note since the PS5 is BC with the PS4 it's less likely that Sony will shut down the PS4 store anytime soon.
That's my hope as well. I think Sony should bit the bullet and make sure that they don't kill the activation servers ever. It's not going to be a huge cost.

Xbox does not have any CMOS, it just gets discharged upon power-less "operation", you plug it in and bam, it works. Same shit since X360. Not sure why suddenly some people jumping out of woodwork and stirring drama. If you have how to connect PS4 to the internet, it's non-issue.
It's cause of the ps3, vita store stuff has gotten people testing it onto the newer consoles. It's very much a problem for people really interested in game preservation.

The real issue is what happens when Sony shuts down the activation servers. What about 10 years from now? 20 years from now?
The fact that you cannot play even disc games is completely insane.
This is nothing like Dreamcast's battery dying and all you have to worry about is resetting the clock on bootup.
I just watched the tests of taking the battery out and no internet connection - disc games do not work on PS4 and I would assume this applies to Ps5 as well.
Hopefully hell is raised and they make a major firmware update - otherwise, never buying another Playstation console after this news.

again it's not about downloading and activating the games that you have. it's about activating the ps3 you have if you have to replace the cmos (and again there is an unknown about the activation servers, there is a possibility that they will keep it up for ps now)

The unfortunate reality however, is that unless you buy all your games from GOG, you may as well never bother buying games at all.
Gamers were too eager to accept the advent of live services, microtransactions, DLC, buying half-baked software at full price with the promise that it will be fixed at a later stage - or better yet buying the fixes at exorbitant prices. And now we have GamePass and digital subscription evangelists, who are happy to trade actual ownership of games they enjoy for convenience and value for money (for now).

Game preservation is and forever will be assured thanks to digital. Rom dumps are there way past any console's expiry date. I have terabytes of games readily playable any time I want without having to manufacture a crt and 30 year old systems.
Let's not confuse it with the other risks of stuff like game pass (aka games as a service being the only viable method to make money from subscriptions)

CMOS battery in my PS4 died because I always disconnect electronic devices from power when not in use. Not a big deal it syncs time over the internet.
