Next-Gen Sonic Imminent

I hope it has the same impact the Sonic Adventure unveiling did, those were great days!!

DCX

A Sonic Adventure 3 would be cool, but I hope they make it mainly Sonic/Shadow-like levels. Get rid of the treasure hunt levels unless they can make them FUN. No crap like Big's fishing or Amy's levels. The shooting levels were fun, but Tails should not be one of them. :P

EDIT: But I really just want a fucking huge Sonic the Hedgehog 4. ):

I've said it before but I really wish they would do it in 2.5 D. Put the game on a 2D plane but have these absolutely gorgeous 3D backgrounds and characters. Alas, this is only a dream.

The Sonic footage shown in the Sega Theater at E3 looked damn good....but I think that's the problem. 3-D Sonic games always tend to look good, but the controol scheme never ever works like it should. It makes for great trailers, but poor gameplay.

Maybe the impending success of Sonic DS will convince Sonic Team that 3-D sonic just doesn't work.

Please... Please let this game be good.

if it's anything like the e3 trailer... the graphics are going to be sick!

Fuck even that. Just Sonic. Just fucking Sonic.
Awww, but I want Tails, too! =(

(And by Tails I mean have him following Sonic, not bouncing around in a mecha)

Amen. Tails' levels in Sonic Adventure 1 were the best... I love how his flying ability allowed you to take all kinds of shortcuts. My favorite aspect of the Sonic games is when you have to race Sonic and best him to the finish.

They should turn to 2D gameplay. Something ala Jungle Beat would be killer. We need frantic arcade platformers, not boring fetch-quest adventures.

I always wanted a 2d Sonic game with neo-geo quality sprites, that would be awesome. Also an arcade style hybrid game (like levels that constantly scroll, filled with a nonstop barrage of enemies and obstacles, like Sonic-Contra....minus the guns of course).

But really, i'll take anything other than another SA/Shadow clone, the idea of a huge Sonic 4 seems epecially enticing, something I've been waiting for for the better of 10 years:-(.

Or just turn the collect-a-thons into a full-blown cel-shaded/beautifully hand painted 2d RPG in the vein of the Sonic comics (just hopefully with a better story).

"It should be 2D" "It should be 2D" "It should be 2D"

Seriously, if you want that, DS has you sorted.

Now for consoles, do you guys really think a 2D game is realistic? it needs to appeal to the mass market, it needs to go up against Mario, it needs to have wide appeal, and it damn well needs to look new to the average joe. 3D is the only way to go for consoles now, Sonic Team just have to figure out a way of making this game work in 3D (which they have so far failed to do but have tried several methods).

Even the first game wasn't just running to the right constantly. How many of you have actually played a Sonic game?

It can still be 3D, and 'feel' 2D. That's the most important thing.

For a next gen Sonic, I'd imagine something like they've done with Sonic Rush for the DS. Only done on a much larger scale. The graphics can still be "ooh, ahh!" polygonal, but they should leave the gameplay alone. Joe Shmo(Or, your average Satrday Morning-watching, Power Rangers lovin' kid) will still buy the game if the game is good.

I still think there's still potential for a 3D Sonic done right, they just need a cleverer camera system. Mario style controls and camera just doesn't suit Sonic.

They could still use that viewpoint for exploring the world and certain set-pieces, but if the camera would then zoom out and go to a side-on viewpoint for the main levels I think that would make all the difference. Throw in dramatic camera changes during the auto-pilot bits like going round loops, and close-ups when finishing levels and I think that would capture the spirit of the old Sonics a lot more.

How about having multiple characters, one at a time, but using their different abilities to get through the same levels in different ways?

You know, like Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic Chaos, Sonic Triple Trouble, and the Sonic Advance series. Why is this so hard for Sonic Team and Sega Studios USA to understand? Make one good game, not several mediocre ones.

It is a bit ridiculous that Sega can put $20million into a new IP like that Yakuza game, but won't put some proper resources into making a new, highly polished Sonic game, that's got more than a good chance to hit 2 millions in sales, and who knows, maybe more if it's actually a good game.

All I want:

An entire Sonic game in the style of Sonic Adventure 2's Sonic/Shadow stages through a variety of lush environmental levels (no suburbans or cities and stuff like that).

Sonic Heroes almost got it, but the team idea was executed poorly and really slowed it down. Glitchy with cheap deaths abound as well.

In Shadow the Hedgehog, it doesn't seem like you can play as Sonic, and the gun idea looks like it'll slow down the gameplay.

And no glitches or gimmicks plz.

This is really old. Sega already showed a Sonic Next-Gen video in their E3 theatre and confirmed in May that they're working on a new Sonic for the next generation.

As far as I know Naka-san confirmed a new Sonic in this british Nintendo mag (Nintendo Power?) in February or March too.

Yes solar, but a. the vid at E3 wasn't confirmed to actually be a Sonic game, it's quite possible (unlikely though) that it was just a tech demo, and b. it isn't "old news" that the game will be revealed on the fucking 9th of September. ffs.

No. Fuck dramatic camera angles. I really enjoyed Sonic Adventure, but goddammit, I wanted the camera to stay where it was when going around loops. The camera remained behind Sonic only once when he went upside down in Sonic Adventure, and that was the corkscrew in Speed Highway, which was AWESOME.

Next generation? They've yet to make one that takes advantage of current generation systems. Each iteration looks like a Dreamcast game.

A 2.5D Sonic would be ideal for me... But if it really has to be 3D, just make it like the Sonic stages in SA2, albeit with a better camera.

I loved the first Sonic Adventure despite it's BAD camera and being unpolished.

I believe Naka was only involved in the first SA this/last gen, right ?
Maybe there's hope they don't f*** this up.

I don't like how sonic games these days are too focused on being fast. The original genesis sonic games were really fun and they didn't have to have sonic going blazing fast for 90% percent of the level with the player simply holding right on the D-pad or up on the analog stick. Yeah, they had cool moments where sonic would go so fast that he'd reach all the way to the right side of the screen, but they rationed out moments like that and the game was better for it.

... have you? A great majority of the 2D games were more or less designed to be whizzed through. If you include the "running left constantly" with "running right constantly" and add in sporadic jumping to avoid enemies, you could beat just about any level that didn't have lava in it.

I say they bring back that Tales Adventures Action/RPG game from Game Gear.

But in all reality, I think something like just the Sonic levels from SA/SA2, but with polish and none of the other bullshit characters. That'd be ideal.

Listening to the Sonic Adventure 2 OST right now and holy shit it's awesome. Best part of the game.

Jun Senoue should do the entire soundtrack for the next game and have all the music sound like Sonic/Shadow stage themes and the boss themes (ghost boss = fucking great). So good.

Even the Knuckles stage themes are awesome, except the rap ruins it. The instrumentals are great.

The best hope for Next Gen Sonic is if Sega takes the series out of Sonic Team's hands. They've been total crap since PSO v1, and the quality of Sonic games has been sliding downhill all generation. Sega should be looking at Eidos and how Tomb Raider is finally back on track now that Core is out of the loop.

Yeah, I was playing the first Sonic yesterday... there was a LOT more waiting around than I remember - the game is rather slow paced compared to many Sonics which just simply have you run right (like Sonic Advance 2 for instance). But in the first Sonic, you need to watch out you don't get crushed by all those blocks moving, ugh it's actually a little annoying =P
