Next gen: What's it going to mean for 2D?

So now that all the machines will be super uber... does that mean Sony and MS will obligate developers to try to exploit the machine? What about puzzle games? Or just quirky 2D games? Will they all be relegated to budget? Maybe that could be a good thing; with 2D titles available for download for a fee on the network services?

What about the technology handling the 2D? Does it mean they'll be able to move all the 2D stuff to vector based technology? Or will they stick to drawing really hi-res sprites this time around?

Seems like it would be obvious to draw the stuff out then use a vectorizer to turn all the assets into points.

But would that cause chintzy animation? It's not like they can't redraw every frame by hand while still using the vector based stuff tho.

But then what about all the sprite assets? Does that mean they'll be discarded entirely, and we'll not see a next gen 2D game from the likes of Capcom, SNK and etc ever again?

I don't know, but if Capcom got off of their lazy asses and produced some seriously badass 2D shit (HIGH REZ), it would looks super-clean on next-gen shit. Hopefully, Arc Systems is up to the task.

I plan on getting myself in the business for a living. One of my long-term goals is to bring 2D games back into some form of popularity.

I'd guess more 2d games.

If you go 3d you need $$$$ + manpower so that it at least looks within the generation. But if you're a little team you can do quirky 2d stuff for cheap with small teams.

Basically Nippon-ichi games will look the same :P

Also none of these games will be let into the US :P

If the rumors and vague statements about Revolution can be put together and turn out to be the truth...Nintendo may have something for you.

preach on

Microsoft and Sony will allow 2D games on their platforms I'm sure, but they won't encourage them, and there won't be many developers who put their 2D games on X-Box 360 or PS3.

I expect most 2D games will appear on Revolution in the form of online downloads to flash memory.

Yea, I made a comment in a thread about Revolution saying I'd love if they'd do something like release the SDK. Problem is, I doubt they'd do anything like that.

I'm currently working with an XDK and making a pretty simple 2D shooter for Xbox. I'm moving onto a 2D level-based zombie game after I'm finished with that.

Nintendo, MS, and i think Sony as well. i'd like to see just what actually comes from this indie dev support.

It would be kind of cool if Nintendo had something like the PlayStation Linux kit for Revolution. Anybody could make a little game and submit it to Nintendo. Most of the stuff would be rejected, but the best 1% or so would be QA tested, then offered as downloads, with the person who submitted getting a share of the profits.

I'd do it without the prospect of profits. I'd just love to have the oppertunity to do something like that for game consoles without having to feel shady like I do now.

i was thinking the same thing actually, but considering the Net Yaroze and PS2 Linux Kit, i think Sony will beat them to it.

What? How is it any different? If anything, I'd imagine it would take longer having to do the artwork for systems like SNES. You'd have to scan the picture in or whatever, then tweak with the scaled-down version for a long time until you got it to not look like shit at such a tiny resolution.

You wouldn't have as many problems with a larger resolution.

That's why you take original assets made on paper. Then scan, format, and clean up with PS or other proggies. It'd be easier because you woulldn't have to spend so much time on clean-up/retouch work and could actually get what you originally want on paper on-screen very cleanly without having to create a huge bulk of the art with programs. Tranferring cel-work would be awesome in high res games...definitely would create all of my assets for 1080 res and create native res scans for the rest of the work on each resolution so that you could match the aspect with max detail and clean lines while ensuring that your original work is as close to the screen's rez as possible. It'd be far and away the easiest and most true to form method. At that rez, you wouldn't even have to rely on separate front end guys to do your UI assets. You create all of the on-screen shit yourself with some tweeners and BAM! you're set for art work. You just script and program accordingly and its done. Waaaaaay easier.
