Nexus 4 |OT| Quality for everyone

I know this has been touched on before, but I need a little help with the $30/month T-Mo plan. So in order to get the plan, do I HAVE to buy a prepaid phone? Because on the website it says I have to pick a phone before picking a plan. I can buy a sim card and activation kit separately >>here<< But If I do that, how do I load the plan onto it without having to buy a prepaid phone? I don't see a link on the site where I can just buy the plan.

no, you can just buy the SIM card

after you receive the SIM card kit in the mail, have your phone ready and you can activate online. you'll choose your plan during the online registration process.

Where are these comparisons? Everything I've read and seen suggests that the camera is worlds better than the Galaxy Nexus -- but still in the "good not amazing" category.

There was a video comparison posted earlier that directly compared the N4 and iPhone 5, and the N4 actually came out ahead in some aspects. So, I'm puzzled by all the doom and gloom talk.

Here is a video comparing the Lumia 920, Nexus 4 and Xperia T.

IMO the Nexus is a little worse than both in certain areas, but overall it's pretty decent.

So, micro sim cutters off ebay.... Anybody bought them and found them ok/safe to use?

Time to start prepping for my new Nexus :)
Why not just cut it yourself? I've done it and its incredibly simple. Takes a minute. There are templates online even which make fucking up almost impossible.

If you go to a T-mo store and purchase a plan there, they might give you the card for free. Pretty sure the guy at my local store gave me my last SIM for free.

But maybe that's because I was bringing in my G2x, which comes with a free SIM anyway (though, I'm not sure why he gave me a new SIM instead of just using my the one that came with the phone...)

Yep...I'm getting the Nexus 4 exactly because I care about software more than hardware.

This is why I'll never go with a non-Nexus phone again after having the Galaxy Nexus. Not having to deal with the crap and bloat from carriers is awesome, but the best aspect is that you are first in line for updates. My GNexus is actually an even better phone from the day I bought it because it has been updated to be smoother and more functional.

I'll be giggling with delight when my Nexus 4 gets Android 5.0 next year.

I went into a T-Mobile store and they said they could just activate the SIM in store or I could call to get it activated.

Not sure how accurate that will turn out to be. Otherwise I'll just pick up a microSIM from the store - they also said it would be free.

Activate...? Sorry if I'm being ignorant here, but I've just never heard of "activating" a GSM phone. Over here you just pop your SIM in (which has to be activated on the network, of course), and you're good to go.

I think he's talking about new accounts.

You guys have better T-Mobile stores than here in Los Angeles. When I switched no retail store would give me the $30 plan, They all said it was a Walmart exclusive or web exclusive. I finally got it at the 5th store i visited in Inglewood along with handset protection.

Sorry, meant activate the SIM, or at least update it with the current account information.

What's with all this GREATEST ANDROID PHONE EVER nonsense. The s3 and note 2 blow this thing out of the water. Even the s2 hd lte does as well. Don't get me wrong, the price is great, but I'd rather get an htc one s/x than this phone when it comes to specs and quality of the build...

But this will have the best software in the long run, and the best version of Android. Which is all that matters to some.

Coming off three years of iPhone 3GS for me and I've narrowed it down to the Nexus 4 and Lumia 920. I just need a change in general but that $349 off contract pricing is very tempting.

Just placed my order for the micro sim. Plan to put my Gnex up for sale soon. Have a backup phone to use in the meantime. Also moving my pics, vids and music to the cloud. I have unlimited Tmo so no worries for me.

With the extremely uncertain future for Windows Phone and Nokia, if you're just looking for a nice phone and don't want to make any gambles, I would go with the N4.

That's my thinking. I can enjoy the Android OS and see how the Win 8 situation plays out. Great thing with the Nexus 4 pricing is I can do as I please. I can enjoy the phone for 1-2 years and then maybe even stay with Android through another phone.

New review by Golem.de (German website):http://www.golem.de/news/nexus-4-im-test-schickes-smartphone-schwacher-akku-1211-95613.html

They praise the overall performance of the CPU and GPU. In the the benchmark they did the N4 outperformed the iPhone 5 by quite a bit (N4 scored 2009, iPhone 5 scored 1551, Geekbench, bigger is better). Navigating the OS is, according to them, very fast as is (3D) gaming.
However, they do complain about the quality of the screen (washed out colors), its brightness (they say "even the Galaxy Nexus' screen is brighter") and the battery life. They tested the battery using an app called Antutu-Tester. Pushing all 4 cores to their limits, the N4's battery lasted for 1.5h. Using the same app, Golem.de claims the HTC One X Plus lasted 2.5h. They went on testing the batteries and tried to simulate heavy usage. WLAN and UMTS were switched on, the screen's brightness was maxed out, Facebook, E-Mail and Twitter accounts were active and according to the website the N4's battery dropped by a third in 1 1/2h. They failed to mention whether the phone was actively used in these 1.5h or whether it was just in standby.

Golem.de also claims that, in contrast to the hardware specs Google provided, the N4 does support WLAN-a.

I don't know what that would do for his decision; it's not as though the phone is going to stop working in 3 years.

I always get a good chuckle when tech sites test battery life with stress tests. It's like testing a car for mileage by chaining the car to the ground and burning rubber until the tank is empty. That being said battery life on current devices is pathetic. Just image if your phone was 5mm thicker but lasted twice as long.

That doesn't mesh at all with the benchmarks Anandtech did: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6425/google-nexus-4-and-nexus-10-review

Isn't the screen the screen the same as the Optimus G?

Meant to be. Anyway, Anandtech's testing found the Nexus 4 screen to be brighter than the Galaxy Nexus by a pretty huge margin.

There is some major thermal throttling happening that is slowing down the performance of this phone. Anandtech repeated their benchmarks with their phone in the freezer and the performance was much, much better. I imagine that the sites reporting high benchmark scores are testing the device in lower ambient temps.

No one is buying my 4S on Craigslist. Buying this phone is dependant on me selling my 4S. I asked for $500 initially (maybe too high?) and lowered it to $450. It's factory unlocked bought from apple. I can still sell it for $450 and buy a nexus and have $100 profit.

Try Kijiji, it seems to be a lot more reputable up here in Canada vs Craigslist.

Also, I wish Google would let me preorder instead of waiting til the 13th. What sort of weirdass release date nonsense is that? I guess since they got burned on the N7 launch stupidity, they don't want to promise anyone a release date anymore.

This is exactly right. When they re-ran the tests with the Nexus 4 in a chilled environment, it outperformed the iPhone 5 in many areas.

In the podcast they said that thermal throttling was kicking in at lower temperatures than expected. Who knows how will phone work with updated software [new firmware is coming before release day].

Ill try kijiji as well. Forgot about them. Thanks. Hope I get a few bites and get rid of it this weekend.

Lost all credibility.
I wonder if the throttling is something you can turn on and off as easily as overclocking. Someone will probably make an app that lets you configure how it works.

Why throttle the phone to this extent though...seems strange.

Some reviewers have said that the phone gets incredibly hot during benchmarks, so the trottling is most likely in place to stop the soc from being fried due to excess heat.

I dont think its going to be a problem unless you play games, though. Ars technica said that the phone had great benchmarking performance the first time a benchmark was run but it was poor the second time it was run due to the thermal throttling.

I imagine a lot of gamers are going to be disappointed. The iphone 5 is a much better phone for games, imo.

I wonder if Google/LG cheaped out on the heat spreader on the Nexus 4? It seems like the Optimus G is getting better benches, which to me would mean that either the thermal throttling kicks in at a lower temperature, or that the Optimus handles the heat better than the Nexus 4.

Hopefully it's more of the former than the latter.

The biggest things that turn me off about this phone:

1. Battery - but it's apparently still better than my current phone. Still, an awesome battery would make me pretty happy.

2. LCD - I read a lot on my phone, I do that more than anything else I think, and I've gotten accustomed to reading e-books in 'night mode' ie, black background with white font. Doing that on a lCD is a much different experience than with OLED... so if it's not up to snuff, I might hold out for something else more OLEDy and cheap.
