2014 is bringing me incredible battery life. I haven't been home yet and been on battery for 28 hours 26 minutes with screen on time of 3 hours 6 minutes and still have 41% battery left. Everything is stock but using ART.

For the ones that got a white Nexus 5:

How is it so far? Any staining/discolouring from putting it in your pocket?

Have had it since launch. Keep in in pocket at all times. Naked. It's perfect.

Storm Trooper model is best model.

Any of you guys have any experience with custom roms for N5? I checked XDA and there's like a gazillion different roms ... it would take me a day just to get through all the topics and try to sort interesting ones out.

I'd just like something stable, preferably with some customization options, a kill-all-apps-at-once button and a numerical battery indicator.

Install xposed framework then Gravity Box and forget custom ROMs. The two options you listed and many more are available through that.

What does ART give me over the other option? What's the point of it?

It should make things speedier (apps launcher and general performance) because ART reads the app like a native language than converting it each time to something Android could read like what Dalvik does. And in a sense, it could lead to battery saving but probably only a minor change.

It's still not complete so you might experience apps not working with it and other inconveniences.

In real world use, app speed increases are debatable in ARTs current state. It will absolutely make apps run smoother, though your milage will vary per app.

Thank you, much appreciated.
Anyone on the fence about this phone, don't be. It's wonderful and quick, I'll never buy another android phone other than a nexus.

Just got home with my Nexus 5, feels like such a huge upgrade over the iPhone 4s.

Can you fine people please suggest some apps I should download? Or any tips to help conserve battery?

I wrote a article on good ways I found to save battery here:
http://androidprism.wordpress.com/2013/09/19/android-battery-tips/

I'm going to do a part 2 hopefully soon and will update that.

As for apps, there is an Android Apps OT in GAF located here:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=457282

You can also ask the Android OT in Community and see what apps they like to get more apps.

The biggest drain on battery is the radio (reception on non Wi-Fi) and screen on time. I'd consider switching data to 2g only when on long periods of standby, it'll make a huge difference to your battery. Or switch it off completely if it's not essential. You can tinker with screen brightness too. GPS tends to drain the battery quickly, so I'd you're using it in your car make sure you're using an in car charger. I can get between 4-5 hours screen on time in a given day and that's heavy use over Wi-Fi. When using the mobile networks performance suffers particularly if you are constantly going in and out of reception. Carry a spare charger if you can. There is a root app called Greenify which is supposed to help battery, but people I know who've used it haven't seen any marked difference.

As for apps, there are loads. I'm sure there's a thread for that. Android Police is the best specialist Android Website and regularly does app roundups.

A couple I use: (not necessarily free)

Safe In Cloud (awesome password manager), Expense Manager, Dashlight (torch app), Pocketcasts (podcasts), Tune In Radio. All the Google Apps are awesome too but they're pre installed. If you get really advanced Tasker can automate your phone but it isn't noob or user friendly.

You can find it in the settings. AFAIR in the mobile data area.

I use Power Toggles to access it much faster over my homescreen. One of my most important apps on Android.

What is the best way to set up contacts on an Android phone?

Does it just take your contacts list from your Gmail account? If so, does it automatically add ones that perviously exist (such as an email contact or Google+ contact)? I don't really want it to do this, I'd rather set up a clean set of phone contacts if possible.

Also, I am coming from iPhone but I am happy to add contacts manually if there isn't a transfer solution.

Sorry, I know this isn't specifically an Android thread :)

It syncs to your Gmail account. Everything from contacts, calender, etc will be pulled over. If you add new numbers to your phone, they will be added to your gmail so everything is synced together. Get a new phone, and all you do is put your email address in and everything comes back. Simple as that.

Thanks. I guess what I am wondering more specifically is will my contacts list on my phone have all my Google+ contacts in, or can it just show contacts with phone numbers in if I want it to. You can create Groups on iPhone so you can separate different types of contact out. I guess really so its more of a visual thing in the phones contact list, so it's not filled with Google+ Circle contacts and old email contacts I might have in my Gmail account :)

In my Gmail contacts, it has "Most Contacted" and "Other Contacts". Some of those are years old (and some not), but none of them are really phone contacts as such, just email addresses. Some of them I'd like to turn into a phone contact, but not all.

Would it be best to goto the "My Contacts" root at the top and create all new contacts in there? That is currently empty.

You can customize what contacts you display so if you don't want G+ contacts to show up, they won't.

Yeah I'd do exactly what you're describing above. You can then just select that contact and ignore the other groups.

To edit which contact groups you want to see People > Three dot menu > Contacts to Display > Customize

Can't wait to get mines hopefully ill be ordering mines the end of this month. Wife wants to replace her cracked Galaxy Nexus so ill give her my N4 already brought a rugged case :)

So what the negatives on the phone? I heard the latest update fixed the camera issues. I'm not expecting it to be better than the Note 3 Camera but as long as its better than the N4 im cool can't argue with the value in hardware and price.

The camera is definitely better than the N4. It has actually impressed me in very dark rooms with flash. The pictures it takes in that situation are very good.

Google sent me a shipment notification on Monday afternoon and I paid for 2 day shipping.

Technically, that means I could get it today (2 business days since Monday) but my tracking number hasn't updated past 'shipping label created'. Ah! The wait is killing me.

Nice to hear. I had the S3 on VZ before I jumped ship to TMobile and got the N4 so I came into the game late and I am really happy with the N4. I would probally keep it if it wasn't for my wife needing a phone lol.

It has everything I was looking for in a new phone though

5inch screen (missed my 4.8 on my S3)
1080p Screen
Better Camera (as long as its better than S3 and N4 im good)

I think the only thing im torn between is either 16 or 32. I know its just 50 bucks more but im really ok with just 16gb I don't store much of anything local. And any movies I put on my N7 2013 and watch there via OTG or on board so only really do music(google music, but to cache songs I only ever need like 2gb of music IF that) and tons of photos/videos of my kids

The camera is really good and HDR+ has consistently impressed me, just wish it was faster to take/process.

Excited, wasn't supposed to ship until Monday but it went out today. Should be here by Wednesday.

I'll have to make a list of apps to get.

Hmm.. well this sucks. Lightflow just doesnt seem to want to work consistently now, at least with Whatsapp anyway. the other stuff I use it for is harder to test :p

Nexus already has different colour leds for different apps notifications. Does light flow do something different?

Finally getting a new phone and had decided on the nexus 5, but I've heard really terrifying thing about the screen and battery.

The screen is so delecate that it can crack just wearing it in your pants wtf? I beat the everliving shit out of my galaxy note 1/old iphone and never had a screen problem. Is this isolated or a large issue?

I'm thinking isolated or extreme circumstances (like him going from very hot to very cold or vice versa).

I've had my Nexus 5 for close to two months now and it's looking as solid as any other smartphone I've had, if not more. I also tend to treat my phones a bit harshly too, so it's not just me having been extra careful and I'm not using a case. My brother managed to knock it off a 4-5 foot table recently and that didn't even put a dent in it.

The battery is a bit so and so. 4 hours of screentime with full brightness appears to be it for my phone. It's perfectly sufficient for a normal workday but maybe not the phone of choice for a hiking trip, although the standby time seems fine with everything except 2G off.

EDIT: By that I mean that it pulls pretty much 25% battery per hour of screentime. When the screen isn't on it pulls less than 5% per hour, this is with 4G/LTE on, so on a normal day for me with 1-2 hours of screentime I typically have at least 30-40 % left when I get home after 8-9 hours or so. Once or twice I've managed to run out, but that's more down to poor planning than anything else (browsing GAF in bed and forgetting to charge it :p). With everything off except 2G , "dumb-phone mode" so to say, it would probably last days. I just haven't had any reason to actually test this.

Well before the latest update it used to be a LOT slower, so there is that :) Supposedly they are working on another camera patch for a later update of Android that will make the camera even faster/better, but more importantly I think this is a clear sign to Google to not make the camera of the Nexus devices so "average". We're willing to pay more money for quality optics on the damn thing - just do it!

Jumped from AT&T to TMobile yesterday and bought a Nexus 5. First android phone since g1. Loving it so far. Selling my unlocked 4S on CL. Is there a quick scrolling app for chrome? So far that is the one feature I miss on iOS. Tapping the top or bottom of a page and immediately going there is missing for me.

Got one because I lost sound on my last phone (a fairly old iPhone 3). Can't complain yet - while Android and Google seems a lot more free form where Apple, iTunes were rigid - it's a tough (relatively speaking) adjustment so far. I do like it though.

Wow what the hell. My phone is only a couple months old and now the main speaker doesnt work. Can only get sound through headphones. WTF? Im wondering if this is because of the latest Franco kernel or if its the phone itself. :/

I get way better battery life than that and it just keeps getting better.

December 31 - January 1 over 35 hours off charger with over 3 hours of screen on time. LTE enabled the entire time, totally stock just using ART:

I8AmdbQ.png

Right now 29 hours of charger and 60% battery left but just over an hour screen time:

My battery life just keeps getting better and better every day and now I often don't even charge my phone overnight because for my usage I can easily get two days of a charge.

EDIT: I am also using Lux Lite to control my auto screen brightness and have it set to +15% which is very bright in all light conditions. Great app!

The only thing holding me back from a Nexus 5 is my long term relationship with Verizon... but I am on the verge of saying fuck Verizon, and moving to AT&T.

So I'm still a bit new to all of this awesome Android stuff.. I have a couple of questions regarding music volume:

1. Is there a way to turn off the "high volume" warning? It's especially annoying when you've got your screen locked, turn down the volume to hear something, but then go to turn it back up but it won't because you need to unlock the screen and say "OK" to the prompt..

2. Is it normal for the volume of songs to fade out a bit whenever you get a text - even when it's on vibrate only? I could understand this being a thing if you have your ringer set to ring.. but mine does this even when it's set to vibrate.

I'm testing out Lux Lite, never used it before. Can you recommend what settings I should keep it at?

Right now I have

Adjust: On Wake
Profile: Day

There's so many options and settings I have no idea where to begin.

Jesús Christ, how the hell are you getting that long on stock? That's a poor dream to me.

My stock Nexus 5 has ~740mb of RAM in use with just a Facebook process and the usual Google/Qualcomm stuff, is that normal? That number feels quite high to me.
