Nexus 6 |OT| Moto takes the L

I imported a Galaxy S5 LTE-A instead. Nexus 6 was just too big for me to replace my Nexus 5. I think if you're going AMOLED as well Samsung really do it best.

So far it looks like what I'd expect from Moto. Seems a decent device, but the pricing and size compared to older Nexus devices make it a bit more specialised. I think some Nexus fans will force themselves to like the device, and that's coming from a huge Nexus fan.

That was a very insightful review. Interesting to see that the pink display is not intentional, just screwed up calibration. Battery is also disappointing =/. Hopefully Google releases an update that fixes battery optimization because this is a poor showing for Project Volta. Software optimization also needs to be fixed for some slowness of the ui. The Nexus should be faster than nearly every phone currently with that snapdragon 805 processor.

Overall though, I am excited for the Nexus 6. The reviews this week did not inspire much confidence for me. I may wait for Gaf and reddit impressions first before plunging in.

Biggest thing as I'm using my nexus 4 is not having the ambient notifications is a big deal a la moto x active display. Seems like this is Google's own take on this which is another great reason to own this phone.

It really does just boil down to Stock vs TouchWiz.... but we all know the reigning champion ;)

I don't even understand these tests. How the hell do you get 9 hours of battery life when browsing on any normal phone? Is this done with the screen turned off or something? How do you browse without a screen?

Maybe I should actually read some of these reviews to understand what's going on.

The phone loads web pages at a regular interval with the screen set to 200nits brightness until it runs out of power.

The test would be invalid if some phones didn't have time to load the web page and ended up doing less work so the wait time between web pages has to be a bit long on fast devices. It also doesn't scroll pages which I think stress the CPU and GPU a lot and explains why the battery life is so high compared to real life.

I think it does an ok job by showing the difference in battery life while doing the same amount of work and how efficient the CPU, GPU and radios are. Something that stressed the phones more could be great, but it's hard to avoid throttling the device. Benchmarks do a poor job reflecting battery life since phones that aggressively throttle have way higher longevity and much worse performance. Getting great benchmarks of any performance from a phone is hard due to the amount of variables. A phone that seems really snappy might start chugging when hot or storage space is low.

Did you order yours yet? I ordered mine Todd. The destiny app will be glorious on that huge screen

No, I wasn't able to. I want a white model unlocked so I pretty much have to order through google play. I was at work Wednesday when they replenished the stock online. It sells out to fast before I get a chance to order haha. I will try again this coming Wednesday. I need someone to text me or something so I can go to the bathroom and order real quick lol.

Why do you people keep doing this to yourselves?

I bought a white and a black case. I like being able to mix it up. If the one I ordered turns out to be locked, I'll be returning it. I could always flash it to the unlocked version though. That'll likely be my plan because I don't want to miss out on the constant updates directly from Google.

Anyone that is looking for cases can find some pretty nice ones on Amazon right now. One case and some screen protectors arrived yesterday.

The salmon color mkb was referring to isn't the same thing as in the ars tecnica review right? In the video when he talked about it the room wasn't dark enough for it to activate.

Please don't buy something based on what it could be. Buy it because of what it is today. I'm tired of these rushed releases. All tech companies practice it and I can't stand it.

Found it funny that people are basically buying the phone and posting that they hope Google will someday fix the screen, battery life, performance - or pretty much every major aspect of the phone.

Got my Spigen slim fit case today from amazon. Laid my Nexus 5 in it to look at size difference. I said damn.

On the plus side, fits nicely in my pocket. Now I just need a phone to put in it.

...... didn't you just reference a Note 4 benchmark from one of those "weird places"?
You tell me if this is good battery life.

Mind you, this is a forum filled with tech enthusiasts, many into video games (and we've had some doozies this holiday season when it comes to games that weren't ready day one.) For better or worse (mostly worse), these kind of expectations are the new normal.

Having just said that, the reported 4-5 hours of SOT people are getting from the N9 is atrocious. Hopefully there's a lot of optimization they can pull off there.

now that I have it in permanent Airplane mode, my Note II gets like 7h screen on time.

I got an N9 hoping the battery would be better than my N10. It's not. I also got it due to ram refreshes. It still has them. Ugh.

Just got my Note 4 yesterday and I'm loving it a lot. Anyone get a Nexus 6 yet? Curious to see if people are finding battery life an issue or not. I almost decided on the Nexus 6 but maybe on my next upgrade.

Wait, wait..... when did being optimistic (about something that is entirely possible) start making others think that you're as terrible as an Apple fanboy?

You tell me if this is good battery life.

That's terrible battery life. And the Nexus 4 has terrible battery life. So that's an accurate benchmark. I don't see your point.

So my 2300mah battery One M7 has the same battery life as this? Lulz.

According to a lab-tested benchmark on a site that conflicts other lab-tested benchmarks, yes.

It's all bullshit really. No one is going to really know until members here start reporting in. I think it'll definitely be higher than the Anand benchmark, but not as high as the highest benchmarks.

Should last through a day of heavy use though and that's all that matters. Turbo charger is a cherry on top :p

Nexus 4 has higher brightness than most phones. Battery life is bad, but not that bad unless you constantly use it in under the sun. It might actually still be better because the sun would throttle it :p

So random people's subjective analysis is the most valid? MKBHD has already said it is worse than other phones with batteries that big. He says 1440p is the reason, but not why that doesn't happen on the Note 4 *cough*old screen tech*cough*.

We have two lab tests that agree with each other (Ars and Anand) and one lab test we know isn't super useful because they standardize brightness as 50% and this phone has a much dimmer screen than other phones so with comparable brightness settings it will do worse.

Again, lab tested benchmarks vs real world use. I'll gladly take the average of a dozen peoples reportings, considering everyone uses their phone differently, over something synthetic.

And again, it should last through a heavy day of use easily.

It's not even just benchmarks though, reviewers who have put the phone through real world use say that the battery is pretty average. Marques said that his SOT was 3-3.5hrs, which I'm guessing is with heavy use, and I wouldn't say this would be enough to "easily" last a whole day.

People still trying to justify $649 for a shit phone. I must admit I expected the battery life to take a hit compared to the N4 considering the 10% increase in real estate and the last gen amoled display, but damn. #projectvolta #bugfixes #updates #lollipop #stock

It's a disappointing phone but i wouldn't call it a shit phone.

Nah it's a shit phone. At $400 you could make compromises, but when you step in to the big boy ball park you should come correct. @649 it's a huge disappointment. It's almost as bad as the Moto X.

Is it really shit though? One could say disappointing, but a shit phone is a tad bit extreme.

It's like an agressive meltdown. You know what your getting with the Nexus 6. Quad HD display, average battery life, decent camera, and stock Android. If that sounds bad to you, you have a ton of other options. However, calling a phone "shit", because it doesn't live up to some lofty expectations you is premature.

What the hell is happening in this thread?

Anyway, got my Spigen Neo Hybrid case today and it seems nice. Hopefully its sturdy enough to protect the phone. I hear UAG is making cases for Nexus 6 so can't wait for it as I love the one I have on my Note II.

How dare people expect a $650 phone to have the performance to match!

Ugh, I keep getting this thread confused with the Android OT. Sorry for calling the N6 a shit phone here guys. I'll continue to bitch about it in the Android thread. Happy Lollipopping.

products need to be priced competitively, and most people agree this phone is overpriced for what's in it, so it's fair enough if people are disapointed

if this didn't have stock android + latest releases then no one would give a damn, google are charging a premium for that, which is ridiculous

I wish every phone had an option to revert to stock android

I don't think most people think that at all, it is slightly cheaper than the note 4 and it is slightly worse in display/battery/camera. The N4 and N5 had insane value and were underpriced for what was there. The N6 being priced more similar to the competition doesn't suddenly make it overpriced.

oh come on, you wouldn't pay the extra $50 for the display/battery/camera improvements? and there's the pen. nexus obviously has some differences which you may prefer (stock, bigger screen, speakers), but there's no way the nexus hardware is priced as competitively as the note 4.
