Nexus 7 |OT| Google's $199 7-inch tablet by Asus

Anyone go through the experience of changing their order from the 8gb to the 16gb? If so, what do I need to do and how was the experience?
Probably just call 1-855-83-NEXUS with your order number or sign into Google play on your computer and scroll to the bottom to your orders and fill out the click to call section. Then just tell them to change your order to the 16GB.
Funny. I keep thinking about doing the same thing, just know that you will be spending right at $290 for a total of around 16GB whereas the 8GB was under $230. It's really hard to justify spending all that extra money for 8 more GB of storage even though it's still a great price for a great tablet.

My justification for the 8GB is this.
* My android phone is my point and shoot camera, mp3 player, fm radio, digital internet radio, phone, 3G Wifi hotspot, free tethering device(thanks T-mob), navigator, flashlight, DLNA media device, and has analog audio/video output to my TV. It also supports 64GB microsd cards and currently sports a 1900mhz Anker battery that lasts me a full 12+ hours on moderate usage.

Therefore, I think the 6GB of useable storage will work just fine for what I intend to use the device for.
*Android Development
*digital books and magazines
*internet (videos, neogaf, etc)
*the occasional high profile game like the current final fantasy III (Which is the only real issue I see with 6GB of storage)
Most of the other small games and apps I might use are small enough to fit without issue like TED and Flipboard or, are small enough to use cloud based storage with.

Glad to see it works. Thankfully you don't need to install a custom rom for stickmount, just needs root access.

Update on that USB storage thing. The user couldn't get the video files to play from the USB drive. Once they were copied over to the device they worked. So yeah :(

So when are they going to release a $300 10" tablet? 7" is just too small.

The OG Transformer is repeatedly at and below this price.

I want a tegra 3 minimum though.

Tend to agree on the 7" thing. I have a Nook Color (OG) and it works pretty well, but with phones hitting around 4.8" and fit in my front jean pocket, I think a 10" is what brings enough of a different experience.

That said this 7" tablet is really tempting...until I saw no microSD.

I'm in that same boat. I've owned 7" tablets and found them to be useless for almost everything I wanted to do with them.

current in that boat atm too, when I pulled out my illegal 4.7" GNex @ a verizon store comparing it to another 7" tablet on display

I scoffed @ the 7" tablet size

the 4.7" screen covered up about 70% of the 7" screen and I'm like (right then and there decided against buying a N7.)

the added size and weight of the tablet does not warrant the minimal 2 inches of barely noticeable screen space, no micro SD, 8-16 GB gimped space, no rear camera, no 4G/3G data, etc

basically what I am saying is if you have a phone 4.7" and up it makes getting a 7" tablet just redundant even more so if you have a G Note @ 5.3"

starting to wonder whats this for it if I already have a Ngex.... too big to carry around all the time, too small to be a full fledge PC.... /laptop and too small to even differentiate the screen size from my phone

I guess it's good for people wanting a kindle fire or ipod touch replacement.

Guess I'll just stick to my 4.7" Nexus mini 4.7" Tablet/phone

it would be nice if someone made a 8-10" tablet shell for my Galaxy nexus... though ala asus padphone

I guess I only have two usage scenarios to fulfill

@home - 14.1" Thinkpad T410 workhorse laptop all the way for srs internet and biz banking, stocks, stc

outside - 4.7" Gnex Smartphone for just about everything

I guess I use the phone on the shitter too....

it's nice

I don't have a smart phone I just want something that I can take with me when I'm out of the house. Also want something for messengers and email when around the house. ipad's are great but a bit too big and expensive for what I want.

Yes. Now I can stop pretending 8GB is enough.

When does this come out again? I want mine to ship already. Is there a date or is it mid july? Is mid july July 15th+ or could it be july 10th.

I'M BORED AND NEED NEW SHIT.

It's probably going to be fixed, so I'm not worried.

I was planning to upgrade from a measly LG Optimus One to either Galaxy Nexus or a Galaxy SIII, but this tablet is making me reconsider. It's less gimped than I thought it would be and it's only 200 freaking dollars.

oh I get your drift... I talk alot of shit about the tablet, then I remember it's only 2 hundie...

might just wander into Gamestop one day and pick it up the 8GB on a impulse buy

when it's actually on store shelves

only thing thats irking me is the 7" tablet seems a bit small compared to my 4.7" phone when comparing it to other 8-10" tabs

it's not the 7" tablets faults it's just that phones that are 4.7" and up are just barely approaching tablet territory.

MY MAIN PROBLEM

As an owner of a Lumia 900, and an ex-iPad owner, I really want to mess around with Android again. Haven't been in that game since Froyo - and had a pretty shitty all around experience there. Jelly Bean looks like a beauty. I'm so damn close to just buying this tablet. It's even in Canada day and date with US, so that's awesome. I'm sure it will get hacked to shit, too, at that price point. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some crazy solder mods to increase the storage space via micro-sd or something.

Kind of sad that I won't be able to watch a lot of videos then on this thing...not sure if I'm still going to pick one up.

EDIT: I'm reading that Blip has a mobile site, and that there is a Blip HTML 5 browser, but I can't seem to figure out how to enable the HTML 5 player though. It says that their HTML 5 browser is standard on mobile devices like iPhone and Android. Not sure if it's not available to PC owners or what though.

7 inch tablets appeal to me way more than larger ones. I think 7 inches sounds perfect.

For certain use cases I agree with you. There are times when I will use a Tab2 or Fire instead of one of the iPads - but that's only when highly portable media consumption is the desired goal. When I'm really trying to get text entered or anything else creative, 7 inches quickly becomes epic fail compared to an iPad.

Dictation, yo.

I see where you're coming from though. I used to own an Acer 7" tablet, and an iPad, and I can see where certain screen sizes are preferable. My only real concern with getting the Nexus 7 is the same reason I returned the Acer after 3 days of use: a lack of tablet apps. I know most Android apps "scale", but I want them to take advantage of the screen real-estate better or I may as well just use a phone. I know this will only get better over time, and as more developers get their hands on Android tablets (especially likely since this one is so cheap).

I played around with a Galaxy Tab 2 the other day just to see how I would like the size. I actually think an 8 inch tablet would be perfect.

I'm on my galaxy tab 10.1 and compared to my wifes kindle fire it just feels bulky in the hand. 7 in tablets just feel better in the hand.

In case anyone is wondering about the process to change their order from the 8gb to the 16gb (or vice versa)...

I called Google and the lady was very nice( it took about 15 minutes on hold to get to a person). Since the order was placed more than an hour ago, level one support does not have the authority to cancel my order. She sent a request to a 'specialist' who will cancel the order in 1-2 business days. I got an e-mail saying that the request was sent. She said I was safe to make the order for the 16gb at any time and that the 8gb order would be cancelled as soon as a 'specialist' got to it.

Seems like Google needs some work on their online store, such as allowing users to cancel orders. I thought the whole point of me calling was to get them to change my order, but they can't do that either.

Either way, 16gb ordered and 8gb should be cancelled in a day or so.

I've read that Asus won't be making a docking keyboard, is it likely that there'll be 3rd party alternatives? Thinking this might replace my laptop in college lectures but obviously a keyboard is a must for note taking, so it's a bit of deal breaking for me.

If this thing sells like crack there will be third party keywords made. I'm sure there are blutooth keywords out now you can use with it.

This really won't be a very good tablet for work- or school-related tasks; it's more of a media consumption tablet.

I'd stick with the Transformer line. I think the Prime Infinity (which comes out in a few weeks) or the Transformer Pad (if you want a cheaper option) would be better suited for you.

Yeah, people saying that the 2.35" is a minor size increase are crazy. There is a huge difference between a Galaxy Nexus and a Nexus 7.

Yep, its more than twice the surface area. Significant difference, no question.

I would like to see a keyboard/cover in the style of the one MS has for their announced tablets.

Just watched the PhoneDog review, and I am really impressed. Great review, and good detail on what to expect with the tablet.

I know, but by the time I get it from Google Play and everything said and done, it'll likely be around 300$ already...

I had talked myself out of buying this, but after this Galaxy Nexus fiasco, I'm tempted to buy it just to show my support for AOSP devices - particularly ones branded Nexus.

I remember some here were wondering if John Gruber would put his thoughts out there on the Nexus 7 and he just called it the undisputed best 7 inch tablet on the market so there you go.

Yeah I might do that. Too bad it doesn't still come with all that free shit though.

Do you really need the Transformers movie and the Bourne book? The $25 for the store is nice but the vast majority of decent android apps are free.

I'm actually starting to have second thoughts about replacing my iPad 2 with a N7 now. Seeing far too many comments about poor quality Android apps for tablets.

I could sell my iPad 2 32GB for £250 maybe, and then it'd cost £199 for the N7 and then shipping (£10 I'm guessing?) ... so I'd be losing 32GB and losing app availability for the sake of £40-odd.

Decisions...

Edit: Losing 16GB I mean.

7" is a weird size that I think presents problems since phone-centric apps mostly work fine on a screen that size that making tablet-centric apps built for a 7" screen may not be worth the effort (in either the Android or iOS ecosystems) for developers. Of course, this is currently a bigger issue on Android since there are Android phones out there with much larger screens than anything available as a phone on iOS.
