Nexus 7 |OT| Google's $199 7-inch tablet by Asus

Ok so how does that translate from the phone to tablet? I don't see the UI connection to be honest. I thought it was just because they could use the same machines pumping out the old iPhone screens to just make the screens for the 7.85 iPad instead. i.e. it's a manufacturing, supply-chain decision not a UI decision.
The HIG recommends 44px minimum for interactive UI elements. 163ppi (points) translates to 7.85 if they were to use existing iPad apps.

N7 is the best 7" tablet available. :) The only thing other tablets may have over it is the back camera and SD card.

Not really even sure if I'd consider the lack of a back camera flaw really. I know you didn't call it one, but some others have. I just don't see the need for one on a tablet.

To be the person who holds it up at a concert to take pictures of course.

I went to the Cardinals World Series Celebration last year, and here comes 3 or 4 players with the iPad 2, taking photos. I thought to myself "Why would you use one of the worst camera's out there to take photos of this?"

Not at all related to this thread. But thanks for reading.

I think phones screens 4.7" and up are already too big for me for me to justify a 7" tablet.

I mean with my phone its with me 24/7 and its also compact enough that I can have it with me anywhere without a bag or cargo pants.

If you take the logical approach, it's not a flaw. But from a consumer point of view, it's probably a minus. I'm basing this off the surprisingly large number of people who use their iPads as a camera. Maybe it's "stupid" but it happens a lot.

I guess so. I'm just saying to the average consumer it serves no purpose, while on the other hand, you have a camera on the front just in case you wish to use it for a photo, or more likely what it's supposed to be for, which is Google + hangouts.

Having a back-camera is borderline useless. I mean it's taking something awkward and making it slightly less awkward. You can take picture with a front camera if you need. It's one of those things that you wouldn't ever turn down but it's not affecting anyone's purchase decision.

Good thing I decided to follow up on my 8GB cancellation, they didn't process it. I would have been charged for both.

If anyone else did the same, I highly recommend checking up on this. Google customer support appears very untrained.

I actually posted a bit earlier about my experience.

In case anyone is wondering about the process to change their order from the 8gb to the 16gb (or vice versa)...

I called Google and the lady was very nice( it took about 15 minutes on hold to get to a person). Since the order was placed more than an hour ago, level one support does not have the authority to cancel my order. She sent a request to a 'specialist' who will cancel the order in 1-2 business days. I got an e-mail saying that the request was sent. She said I was safe to make the order for the 16gb at any time and that the 8gb order would be cancelled as soon as a 'specialist' got to it.

Seems like Google needs some work on their online store, such as allowing users to cancel orders. I thought the whole point of me calling was to get them to change my order, but they can't do that either.

Either way, 16gb ordered and 8gb should be cancelled in a day or so.

You have my less confident that they will actually do it, lol.

I canceled within the hour, but the guy I spoke to didn't do anything. :/

I definitely got the impression that they are very new to customer support.

Also, the overall policies on the store need changed. Do I really need to call to modify/cancel a pre-order? That seems like a waste of my time and theirs.

Just sent a request to Google asking for a change in order from the 8GB version to 16GB. Even if it doesn't go through and I end up geting the 8GB version, I wouldn't really be too disappointed since I wouldn't really use it much for gaming or watching movies.

Can someone who has the Nexus 7 load up this thread for me:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=457378&page=127

Does it handle loading the entire page?
I don't have a Nexus 7 (yet) but I loaded it up in the default browser in the emulator (1 GB of device RAM) running Jelly Bean and it loaded. Note that it is using NeoGAF's mobile version of the page. It took a long time to load but the emulator is very slow on my ancient notebook.

I have no clue what will actually happen on a real Nexus 7. Don't make a purchase decision based on this emulator result.

Edit: I have to admit I didn't do a careful side-by-side check to make sure every image loaded. I just scrolled down the page to the bottom and saw lots of images along the way. They were all sized to fit the width of the display. At least the browser didn't crash.

Consider what you are doing with the thing. Do you want it just because it's new or shiny, or do you actively think the iPad 2 is too big and would prefer a smaller screen?

I think you'll be pretty disappointed at the usability of a 7 inch display, coming from an iPad. And the app selection is really not there yet, either.

I'd say 80% is browsing, 10% social networks. the other 10% split between other bits like playing the odd music and video here and there, Youtube etc. I very rarely play games on it nowadays.

I left my Kindle at work over the weekend and had to use my iPad for reading. Bloody hell, do people actually use the iPad as a book reader?! Felt uncomfortable to use due to the weight and size. The main thing that kept going through my head was "The N7 would be far better in this instance."

Part of it is definitely shiny shiny new but then I do think it's probably more practical for my needs. Apps I'm not overly fussed about as I'd be using Chrome, Twitter and Facebook for the most part.

Yeah, I don't see the need for a camera back there either. I mean if your living in the modern world, surely your phone has a decent camera. Mine actually has a camera button, no need to even unlock the phone just point and shoot which is much easier than holding up a large brick with one hand and fiddle with the screen on the other, in my humble opinion of course.

So, being an iOS user so far (no jalibreak), how suitable will the N7 be for all the emulator goodness you can't get on legit iOS?

I see people saying their andriod device is perfect for this but do they require an SD card for example?

I would've thought that you'd just need to root the N7 (kinda like jailbreak) and then you'd just copy the roms over to your N7 as you would anything else. Not even sure if you'd need root access, might work out of the box.

You don't need root access, as long as you can get the roms onto the device you'll be fine. Personally I throw them on Box.net on the PC then download on the Android app.

Ah so I could use google drive or dropbox for that?

Joypad support sounds amazing but how to you interface? miniUSB? Bluetooth?

So is the Nexus 7 just a competitor to the Kindle Fire and Galaxy Tab?

Is google not interested in 10 inch+ to rival the ipads?

Pretty interesting product to say the least. I'm wondering when they'll release this in non-English speaking countries :/
It sucks that you can't expand the storage via micro SD though.

If recent reports are to be believed, there's a Nexus 10 on the way.

That would be pretty awesome, although I'd assume that at best we'd be looking at something like $299 for 8GB and $349 for 16GB price-wise. Still a pretty significant undercutting of iPad prices, but out of impulse-buy territory for the mass market. I think launching with a 7-inch first was the right choice.

Google really wants to use this to push their Play Store it seems, so I'd imagine the foreign rollout is going to be fairly minimal, basically at the speed they can acquire the rights to this kind of content in foreign marketplaces. :/ Unfortunate, really, as is the obsession with no SD card slots on Nexus devices.

Would like to get a tablet for my parents, cannot decide between one of these or a used iPad 2.

Nexus 7
+ Newer technology, fantastic screen, fast CPU, solid OS, would be brand new

iPad 2
+ More polished OS, maybe more intuitive/user friendly, bigger screen

I'm tempted by a Nexus 7 but I don't know if that's almost because I'm curious myself to see how it stacks up against my iPad and have a play around with Android, but I need to think what's best for them - any suggestions please GAF?

Tell your folks to try out some 7" tabs @ a store see if they like the size first

Its a personal preference but 7" might be too small for some people but its great to carry around on the go

To me the lack of a back camera is not a loss. I think its pretty ridiculous personally when I see someone take pictures with a tablet in public. The no sd slot is what makes me hesitate. If it had one I would have already pre-ordered. Still on the fence...I'm sure once its widely available it would be harder to resist.

I didn't even think of the emulator route. So what would be the best controller to use? Wii-Mote + Classic Controller?

Thanks Emily, tempting to do that, but I was hoping to get them one as a surprise! I haven't used a 7" tablet myself, but a 10" one feels about right to be used in place of a laptop (they have a desktop but would like something more practical and portable)

Agreed about the rear camera by the way, I've only used it a few times on my iPad (when for whatever reason my phone isn't to hand) but really don't think I would miss it at all if it wasn't there

I'd lean toward the iPad, especially if they won't be traveling much with it (they'd probably appreciate the extra screen size). I love Android (just loaded Jellybean on my Gnex yesterday), but I'd never saddle my poor parents with an Android device, it's a bit beyond them especially when something goes wrong.

That said, this opinion is skewed because my parents aren't at all tech-savvy. YMMV.

Well thats true

my 2 cents

iOS - anyone over 35-40 yr old

Android - anyone under

WP7-8 - feels metro man

it's just that most of the things that make each OS special and unique would be lost to them

TBQH the back camera on my iPad is used primarily for being able to show the person I'm video chatting with the room that I'm in while being able to see what they're seeing. I agree that taking photos with a tablet is pretty absurd.

Damn it. I thought I was fine with my Kindle Fire, but after seeing the Verge review, time to sell my Fire to someone and pick up one of these.

It's good if the tablet is being used in a business setting. I take reference pictures all the time to email. Saves me the hassle of having to dump from camera to email.

I guess for me there's no time that I have a tablet but not a phone on me, and the phone's camera is better, and the phone also has my email setup :p
