NFL 2012 Conference Championship |OT| My Brother's Kaeper

How about a thread where we isolate all the Patriot fans? I can see it now:

Patriots GAF |OT| It's Okay we lost to Baltimore, Tom Dreamboat Brady is still the Handsomest QB Offseason Thread 2013

As a German, I can totally see what you're doing here. Should we also put a star in our avatar too?

:p

Seriously. The first owner this city has had that actually gives a shit since Ted Turner.
Yep. Except Blank is even better than Turner because he's not a drunk that sets the owner's box on fire.

But, then again, Ted Turner did challenge Rupert Murdoch to a fist fight.

So I'm posting this up to actually gauge real interest in an "advanced" football thread. I've been talking with chuckddd, squicken and LJ to get their opinions and here's the basics about the thread:

- Advanced and even novice talk on football: Schemes, football 101, film study/breakdown. Specific team strategy is fine as well. If you want to get into why you think your coordinator sucks that's fine but give specific examples/analysis that goes outside of "Dude doesn't make good half time adjustments!" Really? Why? Prove it!
- All-22 film breakdown ties into that. Posting articles/links doing the same is fine as well and can be discussed.
- Typical weekly thread memes are out. Not saying a little ribbing here and there is bad (and we certainly want to keep it fun) but we have plenty of that in main weekly threads already so keeping it a bit more focused is the goal. No Gatas, you people, freeman taco jokes etc. and all of that shit.
- Conversation can be as simple as "What is a 3-4" and that's ok. If it's something that folks are interested in, we can do a simple FAQ on football basics that answer such questions (I'm glad to write it and it can be added to) for newbies.
- General team or NFL related news like FA signings, GM/coach changes etc should be in the weekly or offseason threads as normal
- Draft analysis and prospect analysis is fine!

Thoughts? If there's really no interest in it, then that's fine. It doesn't hurt and if the answer is a resounding no I won't bother putting the work into it.

I still like the idea of this. Sometimes I'm just in awe at how people can watch the plays live and diagnose who was responsible for what. I've gotten better over the years but I still get lost at times!

Why not set the rules for these threads? Two threads is overkill, no?

Haven't you done enough damage? God damn.

At least one of the ideas was to use that thread for more in-depth draft stuff, and that will probably have to include CFB stuff. That thread will have much less traffic than the main NFL thread. Things just move to fast here to sustain any sort of conversation on a topic. It's not going to be a splinter thread. All the socializing (movies, games, scat porn) and Adam Schefter news will stay in the main community thread.

I just think the important thing is to keep it accessible, and not criticize people for asking basic question. If someone wants to know why the Saints D is so awful, but can't really be correct with terminology, it shouldn't provoke "L-O-L"

Guess an item of discussion is things like stats and grades from PFF, for instance. Do we keep those discussions in the primary or the Professor Football thread?
Well, I think some of us (eznark and I at least) don't think the advanced stats ratings really are valuable considering the unbalanced schedule, tiny sample size, roster shakeup, etc....but you and I have this conversation every two weeks.
Who are you talking to? What are you talking about?

I would learn how to make gifs for that thread. Well.....only if Buckethead refused to keep making them for me.

It is like the easiest thing in the world. I have zero experience in photo and video editing and it took like 10 minutes to figure out. Does help to have a PC with decent RAM and CPU

Right, and so that's why it maybe shouldn't go. But like a few days ago, the Dallas News came out with their lost starts to injury. So if we do a review/grades for a game or something, pointing out the injury situation and snaps count would have use

I guess the thing we don't want is "this guy is elite and this one isn't here's a USA Today list"

I may have you and Dutch confused. At one point earlier in the season he started talking about his other "favorite" teams that he'd root for if the Pats got knocked out.

No, that might've been me. What's wrong with having a ranking of likeability? There's definitely a difference between the Falcons and the Ravens.

I like the Bengals.

Great idea and it sounds like alot of fun but who is going to moderate it? You know, to make sure it doesn't just turn into another version of this thread? Politely asking people who are shitting up the thread to leave doesn't work if there is no bite to your bark.

Thanks, squicken and DK. I'll give it a whirl this weekend.

Good question. I'd like to think we can self regulate for most anything but I don't know the answer to the mod question. Who's the usual mod in the NFL threads?

I think the "advanced" thread ought to be about scheme and legit talent evaluation. I.e. coach and gm stuff, not stupid fan stuff. Most of the advanced stats fall in the latter category, alas. College and even HS games would be fair game. "HoFinley sucks" would not, even if it's true!

Also, there should always be a link to the professor thread in the first post of the main NFL thread.

Every single mod on the planet appears to be from Seattle. So all of them...if Seattle is playing. I think you could get rid of 99.9 percent of the trash posts by shaming the people that do it. If that doesn't work, you can message a mod. Once people see someone pay the ultimate price for thread-shitting, you take care of the other .1 percent.

Alright so I'll start working on the thread this week with an aim to have it up either by the weekend or Monday at the latest (Monday might be best as its after the big games). I might have to hit someone up for a graphic or two though. I'll try to PM Buckethead to see if he can lend his talents. It won't be as intensive as the regular weekly threads.

Ill also take a first run at the FAQ I mentioned and send it off to the "core" group who I think will participate and see if you guys think it's enough or if more needs to be added.

Also, I think the thread would turn out much better than expected. I think a lot of people don't partake in some of the more advanced stuff in this thread(myself included) because we don't know as much as some and don't feel like getting out shit picked apart. I mean it would still ge picked apart in the other thread but in a nicer way! This thread, I think we'd all agree, is filled with assholes ;)

What if you could scientifically prove he sucks via all-22 footage?

Just gonna pop in to say the following:

To the Buffalo Bills: THANK YOU!

Thank you for doing what the Lions organization could not, and get one of our bum-ass coordinators out of this city. I am in your debt.

You mind taking Schwartz and Mayhew along with Crossman? Seriously, buy one coordinator, get a GM and head coach free! It's a great deal. Call me!

I don't think we have any now that hito isn't a mod. Maybe he could eyeball the thread and if someone gets out of line let one of his moderator/admin buddies know? Just spitballing right now...

This, pretty much.

Doesn't hurt to learn things either.

All of this sounds good to me.

That's a big thing for me is that people shouldn't get "shit on" for not being as knowledgeable. I hate to use the world inclusive but its apt. That's why I want to get a pretty hefty FAQ up that at least explains the fundamentals! At least you can come into it with that and go from there.

I also think the other thread will see a lot of traffic during games from people that don't enjoy the level of douchebaggery that we engage in here. I'm guilty of it too, and I'm sure its rather jarring to members of GAF who like their teams and merely want to pop in and talk about a game/team, only to be greeted by "Who are you?" or "Your team <insult>".

So are the Pats trying to get the band back together in regards to their coaching staff? Besides Mangini of course.

Referring to Daboll or someone else?

Yeah, Daboll.

I want Crenell back too.

The first thing in the FAQ should be a youtube/equivalent link to They Call It Pro Football, assuming that's ok (don't know its copyright status). 50 years old, almost completely on the mark to this day.

Neat, I have something to check out this weekend.

This weekend will be a good time to launch it, as SuperBowl week(s) ramps up. More lifelongs and newbies may have questions.

I think the people with all-22 access should begin a break down of the SB teams starting next Monday. Then we can transition to the draft, aka Browns Super Bowl.

As far as the faq, leave it loose. We can amend it as it goes along. Just start with the basic rules and positions.

Also, I can make a quick header graphic, if bucket doesn't want to.

I don't think a second thread is worth it, because that stuff is boring. Most of us here watch football to see grown ass men dance.
