Just did a radio interview...he said he didn't know which way the ball was bouncing and he misjudged it.

Has Matthew Stafford been better without a healthy Calvin Johnson?

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- This might sound blasphemous, but Matthew Stafford might have actually benefited from Calvin Johnson being less than fully healthy.

Johnson is the best receiver in the game and attracts more attention than most receivers, which opens up the entire offense. Yet Stafford's statistical rate saw an uptick the past two weeks.

Stafford had a higher passer rating in Week 4 against the Jets (116.4) and Week 5 against the Bills (78.8) than he did against either the Panthers or Packers. He had more yards per attempt, per dropback and per completion in Weeks 4 and 5 than he did in Weeks 2 and 3.

Consider also that Stafford's completion percentage was higher the past two weeks (64.6) than it was during the first three weeks of the season (62.3). Same for his touchdown percentage -- 4.6 the last two weeks to 2.6 the first three weeks. His interception percentage of 1.5 was lower the past two weeks than in his first three weeks (2.6).

Stafford has also cut down his average time before pass the past two weeks -- under 2.35 seconds the past two weeks -- meaning he is making faster decisions. Interestingly, his sack percentage per dropback has skyrocketed the past two weeks, going from single digits in each of the first three weeks to 10.3 percent in Week 4 and 15.4 percent in Week 5.

"There are some pass concepts that we have that take three steps, there's some that we get the ball in our hand and get it out right away, quickly, even before a step is taken and just getting your feet underneath your body," Lions coach Jim Caldwell said. "There's some where we take five steps, there's some where we take seven and some were we take a little bit more. So there may be a few more of play-action passes that require holding the ball a little bit longer to make certain that we get the proper depth of the route for the timing. So some of those things are there and in place, but it's a variety of things, I think, so we're crossing the entire gamut in that regard.

"Now, every game is different. Some games we feel, depending on who we're playing, that we may limit some of that some plays, and other games we feel like that's a great way to get a little cushion out away from the immediate rush and be able to buy a little bit more time. We evaluate it all."

The easy evaluation is the Lions would be better off with a healthy Calvin Johnson -- and that's true -- but just because Johnson may not be healthy doesn't mean Stafford is not having statistical success on his own.

Trent Richardson is the third worst player in NFL history in terms of YPC for backs with at least 500 carries. The only two guys he's ahead of were full backs.

The Buccaneers are officially unhappy with their middle linebacker play. So much so that middle linebacker Dane Fletcher has been stripped of play-calling duties.

Subbing for the injured Mason Foster, Fletcher has not played well in pass coverage or in run fits in his starts at Atlanta, Pittsburgh and New Orleans. The Bucs defense has surrendered 103 points combined over the last three weeks, an average of 34.3 points per game.

Last week at New Orleans, Fletcher had several missed tackles and only five stops, while weakside linebacker Lavonte David posted a game-high 14 and strongside linebacker Danny Lansanah had a career-high 10 tackles against the Saints. Tampa Bay defensive tackle Gerald McCoy revealed that David is now calling plays as he did a year ago, and he feels David’s experience at that will help aid the defensive line in getting set and lined up faster.

...why the fuck was Lavonte stripped of play calling duties after dominating last season? Why the fuck was Dane Fletcher given play calling duties?

God damn it Lovie.

Things that disgust and intrigue me in equal measure:

Having your flatmate and his friends come home at 4:30 AM, then waking up to find your toilet blarry'd without a single sheet of toilet paper to be seen.

I like this short CBS feature on NFL team flight travelling and preparations. Wish this kind of stuff was more detailed and explored in some show. Hard knocks is just training camp.

Hopkins said:
“That was a long game,” Hopkins said. “There is about an hour or 60 minutes in a game and I don’t think that five seconds or however long decided the outcome of the game. We had a lot of turnovers and they had turnovers. It’s football.”

Had a nerve racking moment this morning when my car randomly shut off while waiting at a red light =/ Guess I'll make an unplanned visit to the mechanic this evening.
