According to Giants' fans the team has next to no talent on defense with little in the pipeline, has had two back to back awful seasons (and is currently at .500 now) yet still has the same coach and GM?
Little in the pipeline is a little definitive. We have developing young DT's and a new safety who has a bright future. Big Hank is a good piece on the defensive line but he needs help. LInebacker is a lost cause for Giants fans. We haven't prioritized the position for years and we'll have to keep hoping that the 5th round picks we use on them work out as well as Kennard has and even then he's young and developing. We need pass rushers. We just IR'd Owa so there goes a promising rookie season.
Jerry Reese isn't going anywhere. Marc Ross and the scouting department? Yeah. Possibly there's a shake-up going to happen there is the near future but Rome wasn't built in a day. Ross is the VP of college scouting and player evaluation. Reese has a had in the process (primarily in the first round as Draxal noted) but Ross is primarily in charge of the process.
All of that having been said, we've gotten 7 starters out of the last 3 drafts. A vast majority of that has been on the offensive side of the ball (specifically at WR and OL). I mean, its hard to just wave that away and act like there's been no progress.
The Giants needs a good solid defensive draft or two under their belts for better or worse. Rebuilding the line has been the focus the last 2-3 years. The Osi's, Tucks and Strahan's of the world are long gone and we haven't replaced them yet. The one difference maker blew up his hand in the offseason.
I only included Coughlin because of the Lebeau dilemma. Coughlin is the oldest coach in the league. If this Giants team requires a full rebuild is Coughlin going to want to steer the ship through that?
He's said he has no interest in retiring so sure. Why not? If you get rid of Coughlin you're pretty much blowing the team up at that point for better or worse. There are arguments to be had for both of those scenarios playing out.
Lions house cleaning begins.
Wow!
