Sports questions: Would you rather have a largely free marketplace in place sans cap a la the EPL (ignoring the "nationals" rule that's...vaguely enforced) and La Liga or the cabal-like system of the american sports leagues like the NFL and the NBA?
The cap is a necessary requirement when it comes to my enjoyment of a sport. I tried caring about the EPL at one time but I just couldn't get over how much the money influenced everything.

I am pretty sure I still have the my original Earthbound SNES cart laying somewhere around the house. Still have the playguide that came with it too.
Me too. I found one at a Gamestop a few years ago and snagged it.

Need to buy a used SNES.

P.S. What's this I hear about the Browns potentially looking at Tavon Austin? I'd love that pick.

Who would want the soccer system? And soccer is a cabal as well. It's not like there can really be any new entrants on the club side.

thats like an al davis contract. is he really worth that much?

Have you seen the guaranteed money?

It's a five year extension with a total of $66m in new money so he'll be playing under a 6 year, $70m contract. Seems reasonable to me. I'm guessing $40m guaranteed.

List of players that visited the Pats before the draft:

The Patriots have a pair of players in for visits on Wednesday, one of which is Alabama running back Eddie Lacy, regarded by many as the top back in this class.

In addition, the Patriots hosted Cal's Keenan Allen on Monday, considered by many to be one of -- if not the -- top wide receivers available. ESPN's NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported on Monday that Allen had been red-flagged for a drug test during the NFL Combine in February.

Other Monday visitors included Nevada safety Duke Williams, LSU running back Spencer Ware, UCLA defensive end Datone Jones and Azusa-Pacific offensive tackle Luke Marquardt.

Other pre-draft visits for the Patriots confirmed by ESPNBoston.com from earlier in the process:

LB Kiko Alonso (Oregon)
WR Josh Boyce (TCU)
OT Chris Faulk (LSU)
RB Marcus Lattimore (South Carolina)
CB Tyrann Mathieu (LSU)
WR Kenny Stills (Oklahoma)
G Dallas Thomas (Tennessee)
WR Robert Woods (Southern Cal)
WR Markus Wheaton (Oregon State)

Well, actually, the clubs are more egalitarian, since the bottom X (typically three in the major leagues) are replaced with the top three of the next level.

You have clubs like Swansea that only made it up to the EPL in 2011, and they've been punching about their class for a tiny club.

The American model is more competitive at the top level, where as the European leagues are incredibly top heavy. Swansea will never, ever, ever make the Champions League.

Good players get paid. It happens. Rodgers is the best at his position and Matthews is one of the best at his, so they've earned their paydays.

Gotta pay the cost. Wouldn't want to lose the only decent player you have.

Highest paid LB and highest paid QB (soon). Doesn't seem like a good idea to me. GB stock holders, time to sell!
If Rodgers keeps throwing TDs and Mathews keeps getting sacks then they are worth it. There is a reason elite players for those positions get paid the most money.

The question is whether they will keep up this level of production. More likely for Fraudgers, less likely for Clay. Roids can only get you so far. He looks like he will make a great pro wrestler though so he should be ok.

NFL needs to increase the cap. They used to be able to budget these big time deals into the increases in the cap and after 3 years they would look like a bargain. But these days the cap has been pretty static.

Jay has numbers ... RT @JayGlazer: New 5 year extension for @ClayMatthews52 for a bit north of $13 million per.
Wow. I shudder to think what JPP is going to cost us if he puts up another 16+ sack season or two.

Luckily JPP and Von Miller will probably be getting paid around the time the new TV money starts pouring in.

Also, Margus Hunt is almost 26, has barely played football, and is considered worthy of a first round pick? He's the defensive version of Brandon Weeden. I don't see how any team could draft him that high unless it's the 49ers, who could afford to redshirt him a year.

People are misreporting it a bit. It's an extension. So he still has one year at $3.77. The reality is his contract now is 6 year roughly $69m. So $11.5m a year.

Ah, understood. Thanks for the clarification.

James Harrison rode them for 9 years, I don't see why Clay can't do the same. Especially since he doesn't spear everyone.
Why can't Clay be as good as Harrison? Because black don't crack and white is whack.

Harrison was a better player in his prime. He was not just a sack specialist. He was also great at stopping the run, severely injuring other players and insulting both the commissioner of Football and President of the United States. Clay's only other talent other than sacks is making shitty commercials for shampoo and insurance companies. A nice skill to have, but I am not so sure it translates onto the football field or is worthy of a better contract.

Clay deserves to be paid. Only player on our current D that has been Great/Very good for consecutive years

As much as I love your posts, the fallacies must be corrected.

Clay Matthews single handedly contained opponent's run games last year in multiple games when they ran his way. Of course that's relative to the rest of our defense which was dogshit against the run. Was really impressive.

The rest can stand.

I guess it comes down to how a fan likes the game. Do the bottom third of the EPL, fans of teams that know they can never win a title, and will always lose most of their games, still have fun? Is success that once or twice a decade they beat a top squad? Or a rivalry match against a fellow team from the bottom third?

Soccer, to me, seems setup for the casual fan. Like the NBA. People who only know the names of the stars and top teams. So a non-competitive 60% doesn't matter. I guess the difference is that no one goes to the bad teams games in the US, but those owners still make money. I think all the bad soccer teams lose money

How does Clay Matthews' contract line up with somebody like Demarcus Ware? In actual money and not funny money anyway.

I know they're hip with the brothers but it'd be nice if the NFL offered something besides the fitted flat brim hats.

Big sellers in Wisconsin, are they?
