NFL Offseason Thread - Who cares who won we got a draft to prepare for!

The o-line made him incredibly difficult to evaluate. You can pin-point a few areas that need improvement: pocket footwork and mobility, decision making, deep ball accuracy, but other than that it's just a muddy mess.

yeah I've been watching last years games on game rewind and even mobility and decision making are tough because of the terrible line and play calling. Oh well we'll see what lazor can do with him. I would love to see a big jump in him but I'm afraid that might lead to keeping Philbin around longer :/

PFFs website is fucken horrible I can't find anything on that site.

I think JA was a terrible general manager, but I don't know how much blame he deserves compared with Lovie Smith. From what I understand, Lovie had a ton of influence over the draft process after getting to the Super Bowl in 2006. Lovie also managed to run Chico out of town as the defensive coordinator in 2006 for his buddy Bob Babich. Defense regressed like hell in 2007, 2008, and 2009.

That analysis is so stupid it makes you wonder if internet Monday morning GMs could really actually manage a franchise better than the worst ranked teams.

No idea what you guys are gonna do next year. With the restructures they already made this year, the Panthers have 102 mil to their 2015 cap but only 29 players under contract.

So basically all those players are going to parlay an overachieving season into a fat contract elsewhere.

Cant believe we are stuck with this asshole for maybe 4 more years.

Terrell Suggs held a bottle of bleach over his then girlfriend's head as she held their infant son and dared her to move. Later on he dragged the same woman by the hair as he drove a car with their two children inside. When she got a restraining order against him he had to surrender his AK47 and a bunch of other guns

Ray Rice is on video knocking out his girlfriend and dragging her through a hotel/casino.

Is that worse, or is that better?

Here's the list I really wanted to post earlier.

Lots of great names could get moved around!

Jimmy Graham heads top 101 NFL free agents for 2014

8 safeties on that list, but Delmas is the 4th best. Not looking good.

Worse. They all sound like really shitty people, at least Suggs is good at his job though. Cooper has had 4 years in the NFL, and 47 catches for 800 yards is his best year.

I can stand ignorant racists on my team as long as they aren't going around proclaiming it, but once it gets into women beating/drunk driving etc basically anything that endangers other people, fuck them they can go play in Canada.

Jon Asamoah, Zane Beadles and Geoff Schwartz are the most likely targets for the Giants in free agency. They want a guard prior to the draft coming and they all should come at a relatively decent price with Beadles likely commanding the most of the bunch.

Depending on what happens with Baas, Evan Dietrich-Smith is another likely target. Especially given the McAdoo connection.

True story. After his wife separated from him over that, she left her car at my friend's mom house for safe keeping. It was a big white escalade.

I didn't mean to be that rude about it. I just get sick of the media letting guys slip on all the awful things they do but hand wringing over bullying/Michael Sam/Riley Cooper

I hate they way the media gloss over the terrible things players do. Suggs should be in jail along with a bunch of other guys. Doesn't make what Cooper did any better though.

More from NFL-GAF's favorite ex-GM. I agree with this sentiment. It's easy to say pass on a QB in the draft, but it's very hard to propose a decent alternative for QB needy teams.

I recently listened to Ron Jaworski provide his evaluation of Johnny Manziel. I respect Ron very much, but he fails to see or talk about a key point: If you don’t have a quarterback, what do you do?

He said Manziel is a big a project and saw him more like a third-round pick. He validated his opinion by saying to play quarterback in the NFL, you have to be a pocket passer and Manziel is a very different from that.

I certainly would agree that Manziel isn’t your traditional quarterback. But he is no different from Robert Griffin when he came out of Baylor. He wasn’t a polished, prototype either. They were different in some ways, but neither fit the mold of an orthodox NFL quarterback.

Here are the options teams without a quarterback are facing:
1. Do nothing and go with what you have.
2. Sign the best veteran free agent quarterback available.
3. Draft a QB in later rounds and work with him for the future and go with a marginal veteran QB in the time being.
4. If there is a good young QB on somebody’s roster as a back up, trade for him.

The chances of any of those options working out versus drafting one of the premiere college prospects is much less.

There is no Andrew Luck in this crop of college quarterbacks, but this class of college prospects are the best options for NFL teams that have a real need at the position. It’s a matter of getting the one that closest fits your system.

Last year’s trade for Alex Smith was a very smart move by the Chiefs, but that was an aberration. Rarely does a starter, who is in his prime, come available. I can’t think of any young QB a team could trade for and feel he’s better or as good as this year’s class of signal callers.

If you had to come with some names of younger quarterbacks who are on rosters as back-ups, here are two names: Chase Daniels (KC), Thad Lewis (Bills). The name Kirk Cousins (Washington) keeps popping up, but he’s no sure thing. He was fourth-round draft pick three years ago. He threw for four touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2013 and had a 52% completion percentage. I saw him coming out of college, and he has all the intangibles for the position, but he doesn’t have enough arm talent to start. He’s a career backup.

It is impossible to know exactly how the draft will shake out but everyone seems to be saying how deep this draft is for WR, so hopefully one of the bigger WRs will still be around at 22. I agree that the defense could be upgraded at every spot, but some spots are way more in need of help then others. The safeties last year couldnt cover and couldnt tackle and their sucking forced the corners to play so far off the line. If they get even average safeties then the CBs can come up and play more physical, which is what Davis has said he wants. Improving the safeties will have a profound affect on the defense, much more then a DE or LB would have.

Safety is by and far the highest need area. Thats even if all 4 guys they rotated in and out last year were all coming back. And they aren't.

I would rather they take a shot at both Ward and Byrd and at least land one. This way they can still develop Wolff (last years rookie who already looks better than Chung, Coleman, and Allen), and still draft a guy or two from rounds 2-5. Its going to take a combination of players anyway. To me this would be ideal but of course if they can't sign a top FA S, I am not going to be angry that they take the best safety available in the first round unless its a total reach.

WR is like priority # 6 especially after resigning Cooper and rumors of Maclin also coming back. Not saying Cooper and Maclin 1 year removed from an ACL tear is the best WR group but its already better than what we had last year and since it is a deep draft you can take someone later.

To me ideally the first round guy can't be a reach just because it fits a position of need but someone who is going to be talented enough to start day 1 and make an impact. If it happens to be a WR who drops then ok but really don't see that as a need or impact position. Yes a bigger taller guy helps in the redzone but this offense was prolific enough last year and I'd rather have a better D on the field first.

hmmm.

Terrible idea or the best idea ever?

Curious to see what the numbers are for Cooper and Maclin. Chip seems quite content with Reid's players running his offense

Why wouldn't he be? Reid actually succeeded in drafting guys like Maclin, DJAX, and especially McCoy. He even was hell bent on improving the OLINE. In his last year the OLINE was decimated by injuries and the offense overall was hampered NOT by the players/talent but by the scheme Reid ran. No matter what he had on offense Reid always ran the PASS PASS PASS offense which as we now see under Chip, did not suit the offense at all.

Really glad Chip didn't come in like a lot of coaches would have with wanting to get rid of everyone regardless of fit or talent.

There ain't no GM in the league who is going to bank on Chase Daniel or Thad Lewis.

I think he's just listing those guys as stop-gaps. His central premise is that the best way to solve a QB problem is through an early round selection in the draft. The other options might work but are much less likely to

e:

I know what Houston could do.

Draft Clowney.
Trade for Charlie Whitehurst.

He's good luck!

Teams around the league have been dreaming of using the Andy Reid strategy of flipping developmental QBs for picks for years. But I think the league is now wise to trading for the Kolb's of the game. Mallett won't ever get what Pats fans hope he is worth

NEW ORLEANS —New Orleans police issued an arrest warrant for former New Orleans Saints safety Darren Sharper on two charges of aggravated rape.

An arrest warrant was also issued for Sharper's acquaintance, 26-year-old Erik Nunez, on charges of aggravated rapes of two women in New Orleans last September. Sharper, 38, and Nunez each face two counts of aggravated rape.

Last week, investigators learned that two women were allegedly sexually assaulted by Sharper in the same apartment the night of Sept. 23. New information uncovered also indicates that Nunez also allegedly raped both women that night at the same location.
In total, Sharper is now being investigated in eight cases in five states on accusations of sexual crimes.

Effzee I don't see how you can say we is #6 biggest need. The D had that great stretch of holding teams to 21 or less and was good in playoffs until the last drive. Eagles get tons of yards but had trouble scoring against the Cowboys and Saints at the end of the year. If the come back with the same offense I predict a really down your. Their schedule is already to hard.

We can just do 5 at a time or so. Is it what we think they should do? What we think the GMs want to do? Or what we think will happen?

It should be the opposite of what the main mock draft will be. The mock is usually what we want to happen, so this should be what we think will happen.

The D only looked better against teams which were terrible or playing without their starting QB. Rodgers would have ripped this team apart. Eli was in a funk. They did stop Romo twice and the Bears offense and that was impressive. But other games included the blizzard game against the Lions, Redskins, Giants, Packers, Raiders, and the Vikings who for some reason tore them a new one.

I am not saying it didn't improve but our D needs are all over from S, LBs, to DEs, and CBs. Where as on offense if you really had to point at a weakness its the size of the WRs not even necessarily the talent of the WRs.

They can draft a WR in the 2nd, 3rd, 4rth, or 5th round for all I care. With Maclin back (fingers crossed) and fully recovered (fingers crossed) we have another dynamic play maker. Someone who can move into the slot or allow DJAX to play the slot with Cooper playing the #2 role.

Lets also not forget that Ertz will be in season #2 and he should be developing into the #1 redzone/endzone target for this team. He has the size and speed and was picked in the 2nd round for a reason. I expect big things from him. You can't have it all on offense but if we have Foles playing at a similar level, Chip being Chip, McCoy behind that great oline, and these set of WRs/TEs I am more than fine with not even drafting an offensive player until much later.

Of course all of this is predicated on the BPA available and if that happens to be a defensive player. Overall I see the Eagles strategy to be sign 2nd and 3rd tier FAs to make sure they have starters in place and then be free to select the BPA without worrying about "need". It back fired last year with the safeties they brought in as FAs. Lets hope they land Ward and Byrd. Or one of the two.

Eagles fans, Jeff Mclaine posted a bunch of Eagles news today. Main things are, they are trying to trade Bryce Brown, they are going to cut Avant.

I will be sad to see Bryce go since I like him better then Polk. I am so happy about Avant getting cut though. He was by far the worst slot WR in the NFL last year.

Sad to see Avant go. Don't get your dislike for him. He was never a speedster but he is a great locker room leader and had the best hands on the team. He was never supposed to be the #3-4 guy. He can also run block and was never afraid to go across the middle.

I wouldn't mind if he took less money to stay on.

Bryce Brown I am puzzled by. He is really good and really young. Why in the world he didn't get more carries? We could have used him to spell McCoy at times or to use both on the field at once. Seemed like a missed opportunity.
