What to watch for
Jacksonville Jaguars
Overview
2013 was a painful year for the Jaguars and their fans. After starting the season 0-8 it could have been argued that the Jaguars were the worst team in NFL history. Gus Bradley promised his players that if they go out everyday and try to be better that things will get better and they did with the team winning 4 out of the next 5 games.
2014 will still have its ups and downs, but there is a lot to be excited for. The amount of roster turnover from 2 years ago is astonishing. The team is faster, stronger and a little more experienced which should translate to a few more wins. The Jaguars play a favorable schedule this year and I think a 8-8 record is not out of the question.
Key Losses:
HB Maurice Jones-Drew (Oakland)
C Brad Meester (Retirement)

Key Additions:
G Zane Beadles (Denver)
DE Red Bryant (Seattle)
DE Chris Clemons (Seattle)
HB Toby Gerhart (Minnesota)
DT Ziggy Hood (Pittsburgh)
LB Dekoda Watson (Tampa Bay)
Offense 2013 Rankings: YPG - 293.8(31st), PPG - 15.4(32nd)
Quarterback -
Chad Henne, Blake Bortles, Ricki Stanzi, Stephen Morris
Henne will start 2014 while the Jaguars work on getting Bortles ready for 2015. Henne has shown that he can be average and that is what the team is hoping for. Bortles will be the back up and if everything goes to plan, he won't sniff the field in 2014.
Camp Battle - Stanzi and Morris will be fighting for the 3rd QB spot. Morris played for Jedd Fisch in Miami and I suspect him to make the roster.
Running Back -
Toby Gerhart, Jordan Todman, Denard Robinson, Storm Johnson, Will Ta'ufo'ou
The Jaguars signed Toby Gerhart to be the workhorse. The Jags like the fact that he has experience, but not a lot of miles. Robinson was one of a handful of players that Gus praised during the off-season. Robinson put on almost 20 lbs since last season and is expected to be that offensive weapon they hoped he was last year. Johnson fits the style the coaching staff is looking for and he could start if Gerhart gets hurt.
Camp Battle - Todman, Robinson and Johnson will be battling for who comes on the field to spell Gerhart.
Wide Receiver -
Cecil Shorts,
Marquise Lee,
Allen Robinson, Ace Sanders, Tandon Doss, Mike Brown, Kerry Taylor, Allen Hurns, Damian Copeland
Cecil Shorts has proven that he can be a No. 1 receiver when he is healthy. He of course is injured and will miss the first couple weeks of camp. Lee and Robinson or "Fire and Ice" have been injured since the rookie mini-camp so this will be the first time they both will be on the field. Despite having a productive rookie year with 51 catches, Sanders only real chance of making the team was as a punt returner. His suspension has opened the door for Doss to return punts and maybe a rookie to take his roster spot.
Camp Battle - Mike Brown, Kerry Taylor, Allen Hurns and Damian Copeland will be fighting for the last 2 roster spots. Brown is smart and reliable, while Taylor flashed promise late season. Hurns and Copeland were the standouts during the OTA's.
Tight End -
Marcedes Lewis, Clay Harbor, Marcel Jensen
Lewis is entrenched as the starter. He should have a productive season with the improvements made to the WR position.
Camp Battle - Harbor and Jensen will be playing for the backup role. Harbor was injured during the fourth practice of training camp and will miss some time. Jensen is undrafted free agent from Fresno State. He is big and athletic and really turned some heads during the OTA's.
Offensive Line -
LT Luke Joeckel, LG Zane Beadles, C Mike Brewster, RG Brandon Linder, RT Austin Pasztor, Luke Bowanko, Jacques McClendon, Josh Wells
OL is by far the biggest concern heading into 2014. Joeckel is coming off a injured rookie campaign so the jury is still out on him. The word on Beadles has been mixed after the Jaguars signed him from Denver. Brewster bulked up during the off-season hoping the claim the starting C position. Pasztor is the only returning starter and has been a pleasant surprise.
Camp Battle - Starting RG will come down to Brandon Linder and Jacques McClendon. The Jaguars might have reached when they moved up into the 3rd round to pick Linder, but they saw his tape against Aaron Donald and came away believing he could be a fixture at RG.
Defense 2013 Rankings: YPG - 379.4(27th), PPG - 28.1(28th)
Defensive Line -
DE Tyson Alualu, DT Roy Miller, DT Sen'Derrick Marks, DE Red Bryant, DE Chris Clemons, DE Andre Branch, DT Ziggy Hood, DT Abry Jones, DE Ryan Davis, DE Chris Smith
DL has quickly became the strength of the team. Alualu and Bryant will eat up blockers on running downs allowing the fast LB group to make plays. Marks was rewarded with a new contract after a great 2013 campaign. He played over 80% of the plays and the team hopes to get that down closer to 60% this year. Clemons, Branch and Hood will play predominantly on passing downs. Branch had 5 sacks in the last 6 games and you can not find another player praised more in the off-season by Gus. Hood will move back to the 3 technique and has shown the promise that made him a 1st round pick.
Camp Battle - The DL is pretty much set. This could potentially be one of the best defensive lines in the league.
Linebacker -
OLB Dekoda Watson, MLB Paul Posluszny, OLB Geno Hayes, OLB Telvin Smith, MLB Nathan Stupar, OLB JT Thomas, MLB LaRoy Reynolds
Speed, speed and more speed. Watson was brought in to rush the QB and even had a position made for him called the OTTO. He had surgery during the off-season and might miss the first few games of the season. Posluszny is a tackling machine, and his job was made easier with the big men added up front. Smith has the speed and athleticism to rush the QB or cover the slot on 3rd down.
Camp Battle - The only real battle is for back-up MLB between Stupar and Reynolds. Reynolds had a great off-season and is expected to back up Poz.
Cornerback -
Dwayne Gratz, Alan Ball, Will Blackmon, Demetrius McCray, Mike Harris
Dwayne Gratz quickly claimed the starting CB job last year, but injuries plagued his rookie campaign. Ball was a surprise last year and was one of the better players on defense.
Camp Battle - Blackmon is the favorite to play the nickle, but McCray could put up a fight for the position.
Safety -
Johnathan Cyprien, Josh Evans, Winston Guy, Chris Prosinski, Craig Loston
Cyprien was able to turn in a solid 2nd half after looking lost the 1st half last year. Josh Evans is expected to start at FS, but this is clearly the weakest position on the defense.
Camp Battle - Evans and Guy will be battling out for starting FS, however I think Loston could come in and steal it away from them.
Kicker -
Josh Scobee
Not much to say. One of the most reliable kickers in the game.
Punter -
Bryan Anger
Still can't believe Gene Smith used a 3rd round pick on a punter.
Final Thought
Things are finally starting to look up in Jacksonville. The team is young and fast. Dave Caldwell has put together 2 good draft classes while adding key free agents on defense that fit the system Gus likes to run. There was always talk of the Jaguars moving, but since Khad bought the team, he has shown that he is committed to stay in Jacksonville.
