NFL QB Jameis Winston tells classroom that girls "[a]re supposed to be silent"

I took that as "society tells you to be one way but you can do what you want!" sorta statement.

Not offensively.

How willfully ignorant do you have to be to read it that way? He specifically excluded the girls and told them to sit down while he spoke to the boys about how girls are meant to be quiet but they (the boys, who he was speaking to) can do whatever they want.

Like, I'm hoping he meant to say something along the lines of "Men are supposed to be strong and women are supposed to be silent, fuck that, you can be whatever you want"

I hope

I think the whole quote makes it pretty clear he didn't mean that.

If you actually believe he's that dumb to go into an elementary school and preach that rhetoric, then sure.

don't answer that, I know you do lol

Its really hard to know just seeing that quote, but I can imagine he was attempting to say something like:

"Men are SUPPOSED to be strong and loud - why am I not hearing you? Society says women are SUPPOSED to be quiet, but it doesn't have to be like that - you can be whatever you want to be so let me all hear you scream."

That's not a great thing to say either, but I don't take what he said to mean "I believe women should be silent."

I don't know anything about the dude so maybe I'm giving him too much of a benefit of the doubt.

You can watch the video in the link.

Kinda crazy that the boys weren't paying attention to the starting quarterback for the local team.

If Paul Molitor or Robin Yount from the Brewers came to speak at my elementary school in Milwaukee, we would have been on the edge of our seats.

Obviously the comments he made were pretty awful but it's just a weird situation unless he read the room wrong.

Innocent until proven guilty, except when it's sexual assault and then it's guilty after proven not guilty.

As someone who lived through the farce of Winston's "innocence" wrt sexual assault, I can say with all certainty that you have no earthly idea what you're talking about, especially considering that he was never brought before a court to adjudicate guilt or innocence. But you keep capin' for your heroes, bruh.

He definitely meant well but didn't convey his message correctly, mostly because he's an idiot. What can you expect from face snacking university. People should be more concerned with the message that you don't need to learn anything and accomplish anything as long as you have raw talent.

We prefer Free Shoes University.

Then don't tell the girls to sit down. Otherwise if men should be strong and women silent, is he telling the guys they shouldn't be strong?

on one hand, the phrasing in that quote could also mean he was talking to both the boys and girls and saying they can do anything, and he was simply pointing out the societal double standard of how women are told to be silent while men are supposed to be strong, not that he specifically supports that.

on the other hand, it's Jameis Winston.
I want to believe

Poor choice of words, he had no harmful intent at all.
Alot of tone deaf gaffers ITT.

That man is clearly trying to bludgen these kids with an outdated and harmful message. Video is clear as day. I know he won some games for you but this shit is reprehensible

This is a nonevent imo. Poor choice of words, he even said as much himself. I mean, he's not a trained public speaker or a politician so yeah, people are bound to say dumb sounding things off-script. Moving on

Yeah from the video he's not saying it in the context of unfair expectations on women. He just says it matter-of-factly, like there's nothing wrong about the quiet, docile female in a classroom.

Maybe later, not on the video, he invites the girls in the class to stand up and do what the boys could only barely do, but the optics of this given him skating on rape charges, are the worst.

Yeah, I was only going by the written quote at first, but the video finally loaded and it definitely supports the "It's Jameis Winston" position, haha.

I don't think he's a bad guy, and I agree that his intentions weren't harmful.. but that "choice of words" is indicative of a belief system and an attitude about the way different genders should behave that is problematic.

He's rightly catching flack for this. As someone who works with kids, I could very easily lose my job for saying something like this to a group of girls.

you can tell he was pissed that nerd that doesn't watch football in the back of the class was non plussed about the appearance of the god prince QB touching down in his own city

What a piece of shit thing to say. We've told young women for decades that they're not worth our effort. I hope every girl in that class comes out of that experience more empowered and in defiance of the bullshit he's peddling.

Tampa radio is super pissed at ESPN for blowing this out of proportion. "Now Jameis will never have the courage to talk to students again and the students will suffer because of it"

Not just a poor choice of words. Why is he even discussing gender differences to a group of boys and girls? Women can't be strong? Women can't do anything they put their minds to? Terrible message overall.

Who vetted this speech anyway? Does the school administrator just rubber stamp any pro athlete that wants to come speak to the students? The content of the speech doesn't matter?

Nah, pretty sure they won't.

I don't understand why you have him speaking to school kids anyway. Outside of being famous and being good at football what possible insight could he have for a group of kids?

There are 53 players on the roster at all times. I'm sure the kids would be cool with any other player coming in

Regardless, it was a pretty stupid thing to say/do, and Jameis has no shortage of pretty short-sighted moments. I don't think him saying this makes him a monster, but I think it was incredibly stupid, and it's not like the sentiment behind it is anything special. "Boys, you can do anything. Girls, sit down". Like, if you're bringing in Jameis just to say "You can do anything", any other player who isn't gonna screw it up is a better option for 'someone who made it'

Being famous and good at football is enough, especially in Florida. The teachers and administration were probably just excited to meet a football player.
