on one hand, the phrasing in that quote could also mean he was talking to both the boys and girls and saying they can do anything, and he was simply pointing out the societal double standard of how women are told to be silent while men are supposed to be strong, not that he specifically supports that.

That's how I initially read it.

Seems all sorts of weird since the girls were actually seated and there was no report of him having the girls stand up and whatnot...

EDIT: lol, never mind. Just watched the video.

As someone who lived through the farce of Winston's "innocence" wrt sexual assault, I can say with all certainty that you have no earthly idea what you're talking about, especially considering that he was never brought before a court to adjudicate guilt or innocence. But you keep capin' for your heroes, bruh.

He's not my hero m8. Just saying there are huge issues with the veracity of her testimony:

First story she was hit over the head and woke up with a black guy on top of her.
Second story she was blackout drunk and didn't recall how she got the the place of the incident or how she met her attacker. Someone "Indian" offered her a shot and then she doesn't remember anything. Then her friend's testimony shows her giving her number to one of the men, showing her friend a text from the guy asking did she want to leave and asking her friend is it okay if she left. Toxicology reports show she had no drugs in her system with a .048 BA level. She also deleted phone calls from her phone showing that she rang her friend twice. Winston's story includes the accuser performing oral sex which she denies ever happening but the sexual assault nurse found indications that it could have. She identified him a month after the incident after seeing him in class, although originally she claimed the suspect was 6 inches shorter than him. She deleted social media evidence of her being a "cleat chaser", which makes the fact that she somehow didn't know who he was a lot more unbelievable.

She said she'd never sleep with a "black boy", even though her boyfriend was black and she attempt to hide that from prosecutors and her own attorney, who was her aunt. Her attorney coached two witnesses and her team were consistently delaying proceedings, which they portrayed as being done by Winston's legal team.

Sorry, I shouldn't have said proven not guilty as it pertains to the alleged sexual assault. Apologies for that. I don't think it's fair at all to call him a rapist though.

Tampa radio is super pissed at ESPN for blowing this out of proportion. Now Jameis will never have the courage to talk to students again and the students will suffer because of it.

Maybe he shouldn't be speaking to students if he is speaking from a place of deep-rooted ignorance and sexism.

I don't understand why you have him speaking to school kids anyway. Outside of being famous and being good at football what possible insight could he have for a group of kids?

Any person that gives kids hope that they can be something better than their current situation dictates is always a good thing. Except when they shout down and silence an entire group based on their gender.

I get that a lot of athletes come from nothing, but it's just so weird that they are so often treated like defacto role models. Like, "hey kids if you are lucky enough to fall into the smallest percentile of human beings with the physical traits and abilities to play professional football, you too can be a millionaire at 23!" I mean, if you are going to get a pro athlete at least maybe try and find one with some life experience. Jameis is a relative baby and his career is just starting, hence him saying stupid shit.

Someone who is only famous for something completely worthless says stupid things. And someone with a history of sexual assault says misogynistic things.

Edit: Just saw that local sports radio is trying to make it go away. Just the fucking worst.

Is this the new inclusive marketing strategy for the NFL? It's like the SNL skit where the men are watching the game while the spouses make out in the kitchen cooking.

He's such a piece of shit. And local sports radio is always filled with the dumbest, most tribal idiots.

It does suck and Viceland just ran a story on just how pervasive football is seen as the only viable out from crappy neighborhoods in Florida (Miami in particular). So it is unfortunately not all that shocking how any pro footballer becomes the default role model, and less shocking that Jameis decided he only really needed to talk to the boys for his pep talk.

Sit down and shut up for the girls, and toxic masculinity for the boys. Nice old-school gender stereotyping, asshole. Please don't put this idiot in front of students ever again.

Yeah I agree that sports figures shouldn't be held to the role model standard. There's far more examples of them being exactly what you don't want your kids to be than the other way around. But it's the unfortunate world we live in that props up sports stars and Hollywood stars up on a pedestal.

How had I never seen that before? That's not quite at the butt fumble level, but it's not too far away.

I'm still shocked that Geno's "switch hands on the goal line behind your back" fumble has not overtaken the butt fumble in NY/Jets lore.

It was possibly the worst decision I have ever seen a player make during a game. (Palace incident excluded)

The butt fumble was a legit accident.

Sure, but its not going away.

Barkleys famous rant about this, was what, 20 years ago?

He tells the women to be silent, and then directly after that, unironically, goes back to saying that the guys can do whatever they want.

Just what.

i think this was just Jameis not speaking properly.... He has always come across to me as someone that speaks with a lot of emotion, but does not have a great grasp on how to say exactly what he means. Where the normal person will think before they speak, he gets emotional and sort of blurts out his thoughts without realizing how it will sound. A person with his past should be ready to talk publicly about anything that deals with gender. This is unfortunate.

Yeah this guy is a literal flaming piece of human excrement.

Also this guy was an absolute moron like 4 or 5 years ago. It is hard to blame his stupidity solely on football.

It is hilariously pathetic how Winston threw some kid under the bus as an excuse for why he said what he did. He is literally blaming a child for him saying women are supposed to be silent.
