NFL Week 8 |OT| Take A Chill Pill

Hmm, Nelson downgraded to out of practice today. I'd actually really love to see him miss this weekend's game to truly get a chance to see Cobb in the spotlight; I have a feeling he really is worth all the hype the last couple weeks.

I'm not sure Pack fans would even care, I mean it's the Jags.

Jones would fill that role and Driver would probably be the #2. They still want to move Cobb around as much as possible. I doubt you'll see him as a traditional #1. He's Welker-esque

No no I don't mean playing the outside, I mean just a guaranteed 10-15 targets in the game.

Though who knows, with how he's been playing that could be the case regardless now anyways.

Have you seen him play this year? No way he's better at the 1 or 2 than he is the way the Packers have him moving around.

You feelin' good about the game this Sunday? I think it's a toss up, honestly.

Here's the more appropriate picture, though:

Well he was featured in week one and that didn't work out at all. We ran cobra 15 times that game. Since then it's never been more than six. That's him in the backfield in shotgun. They've been slowly bringing it back though. Last week it was like 6.

It'll be interesting to see what they do in these next two games and then after the bye. I'm guessing he will get back to a more prominent role.

Giants practice report:

C David Baas - Practiced - (Ankle) Coughlin said Baas should be available for Sunday's game in Dallas.
S Kenny Phillips - Limited Practice - (Knee) No word if he'll play yet but he's close!
RB Ahmad Bradshaw - Did not practice - (Foot) Second day in a row. Coughlin hopes he can practice tomorrow. May see a heavy dose of Brown/Wilson though Bradshaw says this was precautionary and he will play.
LB Jacquain Williams - Did not practice - (Knee) He's all but been ruled out. Coughlin predicts he'll be back next week.
DT Rocky Bernard - Limited Practice - (Quad) - Also being worked back in slowly. No word if he'll play or not.

...and that's it. Quite literally everyone else is off of the injury report. Hakeem Nicks has practiced three days in a row and the buzz is this week has been the best he's looked since before the foot surgery.

EDIT: Also:

@JennyVrentas: Diehl said he's not sure if he'll get his starting job back He wants to but said he'll do what team needs. Diehl=1st class

Do they not know the difference between guaranteed and nonguaranteed money? Eagles can cut Vick the day the season ends and not owe him another cent.

What a fucking idiotic exercise. Totally useless without knowing how much of that money is guaranteed.

It was some overall feature they did. NBA and MLB there also. As only a casual follower of NBA I'm surprised at how much money some guys I've never heard of make.

edit: As meh as I was on all of Apple's announcements this year, I kind of am excited for this Windows RT. It's clearly different. I really don't need a 10 inch tab, and I wonder if the UI isn't as well suited for smaller screens.

Glad you asked. It was sort of why I posted it as there are plenty of contract details to go over to determine the validity of the list:

Chris Johnson

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/09/08/the-full-chris-johnson-contract-breakdown/

Per a source with knowledge of the deal, Johnson received a $10 million signing bonus, along with a $3 million fully guaranteed base salary in 2011.

In 2012, Johnson will receive a base salary of $8 million. The base salary is guaranteed for injury only at the time of signing. It becomes fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2012 League Year.

The base salary reduces by $250,000 if Johnson doesn’t participate in the team’s offseason workout program. It drops by another $300,000 if he doesn’t rush for 1,000 yards in 2011.

In 2013, Johnson’s salary is $10 million, $9 million of which is guaranteed for injury only now. It becomes fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2013 League Year. The salary drops by $250,000 if he fails to complete the offseason workout program.

In 2014, Johnson’s salary is $8 million, with the same $250,000 de-escalator. Ditto for 2015.

In the final year of the deal, Johnson’s salary will be $7 million, with a $2 million roster bonus due on the seventh day of the 2016 League Year. The base salary can drop by up to $2 million based on rushing yards, along with a potential $250,000 reduction based on participation in offseason workouts.

It works out to a be a six-year, $56 million deal. That’s an average of $9.3 million.

Cap hit:

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/tennessee-titans/chris-johnson/

Michael Vick

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/30/more-vick-contract-details/

Vick’s $20 million compensation for 2011 comes from a $7 million signing bonus, a $10 million guaranteed base salary, and a $3 million roster bonus. His cap number is $14.4 million, which created $1.8 million in additional cap room for the team.

In 2012, Vick earns a guaranteed base salary of $12.5 million. His cap number is $13.9 million.

In 2013, Vick’s base salary is $16.5 million, but it has a $1 million de-escalator, which would drop the salary to $15.5 million. (The specific event that would drop his salary isn’t known.) Only $3 million of the amount is guaranteed, for injury only. The cap number is $16.9 million.

For 2014, Vick’s base salary of $12.5 million can escalate to $15 million. He also has a $3 million roster bonus, and a cap number of $19.4 million.

For 2015, Vick has a base salary of $14.5 million, with a roster bonus of $2 million. The cap number is $17.9 million.

After year two, when all of the fully guaranteed money has been paid, it will be easy for the Eagles to walk away.

Cap hit:

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/michael-vick/

Mark Sanchez

Sanchez will get $27M guaranteed over next two years. Means he ain't going anywhere for a while. #Jets

Cap hit:

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-jets/mark-sanchez/

Kevin Kolb

http://www.azcentral.com/sports/car...lary-cap-costs-kevin-kolb.html?nclick_check=1

According to salary information I have, Kolb received a $10 million signing bonus. For cap purposes, that amount is prorated over the life of the contract. So last season Kolb had a cap number of $4 million ($2 million salary, $2 million signing bonus).

Assuming the Cardinals pay the $7 million bonus, Kolb's cap number this year will be $10.5 million ($7 million roster bonus, $2 million signing bonus, $1 million salary, $500,000 workout bonus).

If the Cardinals don't pay the signing bonus, Kolb will still cost them $8 million against the cap, the unprorated portion of his signing bonus.

His deal was 21 million of guaranteed money.

Cap hit:

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/arizona-cardinals/kevin-kolb/

Matt Cassel

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4327067

Cassel and the Chiefs worked out a six-year deal that will pay him in excess of $10 million a season, according to a source. The contract will keep Cassel with the Chiefs until 2014.

The deal is for $63 million, with $28 million guaranteed, according to a source. He's going to make $40.5 million in the first three years of his contract.

I'll dig up the last 5 here in a bit.

Except all contracts aren't equal. MLB contracts are guaranteed. NFL contracts generally are not. No one gives a fuck about the NBA.

The only part of any contract that matters is the guaranteed money and in the NFL, that generally means your bonus plus the most current season.

DeAngelo Williams

(tough to find a good yearly breakdown for him but)

DeAngelo Williams signed a mega 5 year $43 million contract with Carolina on July 29. The details that stood out to many people in NFL circles were the $21 million in guarantees that Williams received as well as the $16 million bonus.

Cap Hit:

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/deangelo-williams/

Tyson Jackson

$31 milllion guaranteed
2012 Option Bonus: $12.5 million
2011 Incentive: $7.05 million
2012-13 Workout Bonus: $250,000

You can see cap hit here:

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/tyson-jackson/

Will Smith

$25 million guaranteed
2009 Roster Bonus: $5.45 million
2010 Roster Bonus: $5.55 million
2012 Restructure Bonus: $6.175 million
2012 Option Bonus: $1 million
2013-14 Roster Bonus: $1 million
2009-14 Workout Bonus: $150,000
Incentives: $3 million
2012: Suspended 4 games

You can see cap hit here:

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/will-smith/

Doug Free

$17 million guaranteed
Signing Bonus: $10.3 million
2012 Restucture Bonus: $4.8 million

You can see cap hit here:

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/doug-free/

(amusingly, I found this article from ESPN saying how great a deal his contract was when he signed it :jnc

http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/post/_/id/4680782/doug-free-contract-a-great-deal-for-dallas )

Carson Palmer

Honestly can't find a breakdown with guaranteed money outside of the cap hit per year:

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/oakland-raiders/carson-palmer/

He did apparently take a 5 million pay cut this season to help the Raiders with their cap situation.

Yeah, it is. Easily the worst of the bunch from what I've seen.

I updated the first five with links to the cap hit per year.

The Panthers spent a buttload that year on nobodies. He's not even the worst contract. Why you would pay 2 RBs that much money when neither of them produce is beyond me. They didn't even do it back when they were doing well. I guess they figured two injury prone backs = 1 amazing one.

I think Williams is meh, but Stewart is pretty good. Not worth what they paid him, but he'd be a top 10 RB in a non-moronic offense

+ this (J. Stewart)

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/jonathan-stewart/

$23 million guaranteed
2014 Option Bonus: $9 million
$6 million is available through incentives based on 1,200-yard rushing seasons and 1,600 all-purpose yard seasons.

tho he'll probably be cut in '13 (w/ that huge increase)

It says $23m guaranteed, but he's never seeing $23m because as you pointed out, it'd be best to cut him before the option bonus kicks in. They'll save 100k, which isn't much considering they also have to replace him, but if they keep him on the roster they'll have to wait until after the '15 season if my math is correct.

He's often injured. They're both good, but they're not used properly and there's no need for both on the roster. They should have just signed Stewart and kept Goodson to back him up.

DeAngelo's contract is by far the worst in the league right now, and I'm sure was Exhibit A on the Panther's GM being fired this week.

He's gone next year though, his $21m guaranteed was all tied up in a $16m signing bonus he got last year, and his salary this year. Nothing beyond that is guaranteed.

He made out like a bandit.

You think he's gone before the 13 season? That's a pretty big hit.

Edit: Guess they can cut him late and split the hit into two years, or they can just keep him because they won't save any money by dropping him unless they split it into two years.

Holy shit @ that Tyson Jackson contract. I remember when he was drafted 3rd by KC there was hype of him being a Richard Seymour type 3-4 DE. What a bust he has been.

That pick and the Matt Cassell signing should have been enough to fire Scott Pioli last year.
