NFLPA director: likelihood of a strike/lockout in 2021 "almost a virtual certainty"

It's been over six years since the NFL had to deal with a work stoppage of any sort, and unfortunately for the league, that's a streak that could be coming to an end soon, according to DeMaurice Smith.

Smith, who serves as the executive director of the NFLPA, believes there's going to be a work stoppage after the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) expires following the 2020 season.

"I think the likelihood of either a strike or a lockout in [2021] is almost a virtual certainty," Smith said this week during an interview with MMQB.com.

The last time the NFL had to cancel games due to a work stoppage came in 1987. This time around, Smith isn't quite sure yet if a work stoppage would lead to any canceled games, but he didn't sound optimistic.

"I don't know. Let's look at our history," Smith said.

The problem with negotiating a new CBA is that it sounds like the players don't really trust the owners right now.

"The owners do a deal in 2006 and opt out in 2008. We do a deal in 2011 with no opt outs because we like the benefits under the current deal and we didn't want to give the owners an opportunity to opt out and take back the games that we currently have," Smith said. "If there was no renegotiating of the collective bargaining agreement and we reach 2021, there is no uncapped year. The last time we went through it, we found out that the owners lied and cheated about the uncapped year, so why would I do that again?"

The seeds for the 2011 lockout were planted in 2008 when the NFL's 32 owners voted to opt out of a CBA that was supposed to run through 2012. When the league opted out, that meant an early end to the 2006 CBA agreement and left the league with an uncapped salary year in 2010.

According to Smith, the owners "colluded with each other" so that the players wouldn't be able to take advantage of the uncapped year.

"All the mutual benefits that were supposed to happened as result of the opt out didn't happen last time," Smith said. "Owners colluded with each other and we found out that they colluded with each other. All of the bad things that went to the players happened and none of the bad things that went to the owners happened. So we have a new deal that if it doesn't get fixed, you go into a certain Armageddon."

What this all means is that Smith is ready to take the NFLPA to battle with the NFL over the new CBA. The NFLPA is taking the possibility of a work stoppage so seriously that it warned players in May to start saving money.

If a work stoppage does happen, it wouldn't start for at least four more seasons. The current CBA runs through the 2020 season, which means any potential work stoppage wouldn't take place until the 2021 season.

NFL still wants 18 games but they also will end up talking about league punishments and concussion protocol with the long term disability impact.

It'll be a mess and I predict the owners winning again because 53 players across 32 teams means the star power is spread out unlike basketball.

Hopefully the NFLPA doesnt drop the ball again this time. Get the ambiguity out of the disciplinary process. Get these people proper care.

They need to. The owners have them raked over the coals. Hold out until you get the power the NBA players have.

The players will fold like chairs because their union is shit and they hate missing "game checks".

I feel zero pity for them.

The NFLPA will need to demand an independent body to handle punishment. Goodell is random af with how he deals these out.

The NFL has zero incentive to give that power up.

These players need to demand guaranteed contracts and post career medical benefits.

they need to band together better. part of the problem last time is some of the guys needed those game paychecks.

Not really possible as the NBA has far fewer players and the superstars are the most important asset the NBA has, this just isn't the case with the NFL.

The owners always win because of the nature of the sport. I predict a similar result this time around. Owners get 18 games, players get higher cap/ bigger piece of the pie and a third party to handle all disciplinary actions.

bullshit. they like money. They don't have money without players.

They will use replacement players. The NFL has no qualms doing so.

They'd have a better chance if the superstars already getting the big bucks stood by the rank and file guys that can't afford an injury, etc., but they won't. Too many people waiting in the wings to replace those low totem guys.

It's actually the opposite in the NFL. The rank and file do not want to miss any games because they want to be paid. One of the downsides of having a very short career.

Hahahahahaha the owners will never give them Guaranteed Contracts...they rather keep the gates close forever than do that...

Would be nice for NFL players to get guaranteed contracts like the other major pro sports. It's not like you'll be able to be gainfully employed after your playing career when you start having dementia in your 40s.

fans ain't watching that shit.

An NFL team owner has PLENTY of money without the NFL team. They didn't get there by being poor.
no shit sherlock, you know what rich people like more than money? More fucking money.

if they start getting guaranteed contracts the players are going to start getting paid way less than they already do IMO. too much risk.

also the MLB brings in $4+ billion less than the NFL, but the average MLB player gets like $3m more/year... NFL has 12 players $20m/year, MLB has 38, and that will like double in the next few years as all these young studs get out of arbitration

Good. Stop being cowards and budget yourselves for a shutdown year. You need a full stoppage to actually like.

Leverage shit

But they won't, they'll buckle the minute they risk losing a single game check and the owners will get everything they want again.

Calm your tits, dude. What I'm saying is that they have ALL of the leverage in any sort of negotiation because if the NFL doesn't have games, they're still (mostly) billionaires while the mid to low-paid players in the NFL are scrambling for cash. Tom Brady would be fine. Defensive Lineman #407 would be screwed hardcore.

Fans watch college football in droves. The NFL is not a star based league.

not necessary but many fans watch for fantasy football and they draft those star players.

the quality will be terrible. Every year you have teams going 2-14, there literally isn't enough quality quarterbacks to man 32 teams, amongst other players. You think they're magically going to find a bunch of replacement players to put on quality games.

Easier said than done. For every Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers that are set for life and can afford to take a stand, there are 20-30 guys just trying to catch on and make a living, who are getting paid the minimum and who have a 3-4 year shelf life during which to make that living.

Players won't be able to holdout for that long because they need the money. There is a reason why Smith has been encouraging player to save up in anticipation of a possible lockout.

They will get no guaranteed contracts and if they lock out it won't be for long, the owners have all the power, players are just pwns, also the NFL owners are filthy rich without football....

Couple that with the ones that are living well beyond their means or have made bad business decisions that make earning that weekly check a necessity.

Yup. Keep in mind a lot of these guys are victims of this country's toxic football culture. They are told from the time they are 13 or 14 to focus on nothing but football, at the expense of school, at the expense of other sports, then they get to college and are encouraged by asshole coaches to take Mickey Mouse classes just to stay eligible and earn a worthless degree, then they are fortunate enough to catch on in the NFL and they are making league minimum non-guaranteed money, with a potential 3 or 4 year career before injuries or age end that dream, they have zero employable skills to fall back on, and you are asking them to sit out? Potentially for a year or more? And do what exactly?

People saying they'll fold because the players need money.. Dude is basically giving a 3-year heads up so if they can't save up then fuck em.

Most players don't earn that much, especially when you consider that the money isn't guaranteed and basically has to last them the rest of their lives because their maximum earning potential is such a small window. Like if you had to make all of the money you were going to make for your entire life by the time you were 30 would you willingly give one or two of those years up?

The average NFL career is 3 years. The vast majority of these guys need to make their money and make it ASAP. Very few NFL players can afford to sacrifice a significant amount of pay when their careers are so limited. Even if they save up now. Missing out on real games, and losing real money can be devastating to their post-NFL lives.

Most of the these players come from poor families, you think they know how to save properly? it's the reason why you hear stories of players filing for bankruptcy, Terrell Owens made $80m while playing, now he's broke..

Good for the players and the future of the league. Now if the players can start planning NOW for that eventuality and save/conserve their funds.

Yeah, that guaranteed money ship sailed a long time ago. The owners are NEVER signing up for that shit. Signing bonuses is the closest we will see to guaranteed money in the NFL.

The players will fold because the average career is so short. You're asking guys to take a stand for players in the future when the vast majority of said players will no longer be in the league.

The issue I have is with guaranteed contracts is that you will have some players who suck and don't deserve the pay they're getting. Someone like Pablo Sandoval is getting $50M for being terrible. I do understand the need to get some money because of a career ending injury. Most of us work under pay for performance. Why should sports be any different?
