NHL April |OT| The End

Also Marcus Motherfucking Foligno, just watched the highlights, this guy is a motherfucking beast, quickly becoming one of my favorites. I cant believe we passed up on him in the 4th round when we had his brother playing with us already, 4 picks later Buffalo picks him up. He looks like a better skater, bigger and actually uses his teammates unlike his brother.

Nick uses his teammates when he plays in the top-6, when he's in the bottom-6 he frequently decides to try and dangle through 3 opposing players and lose the puck.

I generally like his game this year, only negatives are he's really streaky and seems to be trying to set an NHL record for goalie interference penalties. 46 points(5th in team scoring).

We took Chris Wideman that round, he should be a pretty good player.

He's been a revelation. I'm super impressed and hope he can keep it up in the long term, because right now he's exactly what this team has been lacking.

After the Flyers game last night the only LOGICAL conclusion is there is some sort of sentient goalie improving parasite that is jumping from mediocre goaltender to mediocre goaltender and improving their play until moving onto its next host.

Burke --> Boucher --> Bryz --> Smith

My god... you're right. The only question is, who is patient zero?

He should be in the running for the Calder next season because he hasn't played 25 games yet.

Going to be a close race with Kuzentesov, Silfverberg, Huberdeau, Yakupov, Tarensenko etc.

Watched most of the Jets game from my parents place (the family dog is doing poorly, saying bye :( ) and when my dad wasn't manfully choking back tears thinking of putting Penny to sleep he kept believing the Jets could come back. I wasn't feeling it, but it was great to see them win in OT. Would have been easy to mail in the last few games after being eliminated, glad to see a road win. But wtf Pavs on the tying goal.

Yeah, sorry to hear about your dog.

I'm just upset that the Panthers could have clinched the division last night.

Oh well. Clinching against Washington would be great.

Burke will let anyone leave the organization if it's for a higher position somewhere else. Including Dallas Eakins.

Except Nonis. I remember earlier last year they denied it because he gets paid a significant amount more than a regular assistant GM or something like that.

Sorry about your dog :/.

I almost deleted the game right off my PVR without finishing it. I went and looked at nhl.com for the final score and saw we at least scored. Highly surprised when we won in OT. Agreed on that tying goal...should have been able to win it in regulation.

I got an awesome idea for the Phoenix situation.

Let whichever group that wants to buy it and take to Quebec, for next season take the team to the Colisée Pepsi arena which is the old arena of the Nordiques and currently the arena for the Ramparts, it seats about just over 15000 so its about the same as the Jets arena, use that arena for the single season until that the new arena is ready.

It only takes 15000 people, but its better than only filling an arena of 6000 for $20 ticket prices in the middle of the desert.

This is a terrible idea. Quebec is way too small to have an NHL team.

To be fair, the Colisée (15,176) actually seats more people than the MTS Centre (15,004), but only by a small bit.

I think it's still a terrible idea, though. There's still no solid group in Quebec who can take ownership of the Coyotes. Winnipeg already had their shit together when the NHL game them the Thrashers.

Isn't it Quebecor (Videotron) that wants a team? Or is that just the press assuming?

Quebecor is the group that would own the team.

The Colisee is a far better temporary venue than we've seen in the past. Cow Palace anyone?

Bolded is flat out wrong.

I thought it was the city, just like Glendale right now, thats why they are building a new arena.

NHL prohibits municipal ownership of team, as do all the other pro leagues.

City is paying half, province the other half. Quebecor has already bought the naming right and is managing the arena but the price they're paying depends on whether or not they can bring an NHL team in.

I remember during the trade deadline last year, there was a lot of talk about the Canucks acquiring Lapierre and how he was on his last ropes. There was a lot a doubt about his ability to buy into a system and being an effective player again. Boy did those people get proven wrong.

Basically... NHL in Canada will soon be mostly complete, outside of Hamilton (not a big deal)

The states side needs a bit of rearranging

The one city truly in need of a team is Seattle and maybe Houston (which can't happen legally at the moment thanks to the owner of the Houston AHL team)

NYI seems like the potential unfortunate mover since Columbus is now fixed with a casino deal and Florida being stuck on a 4 million year lease

If NYI moves into Barclays or to Seattle, I consider the NHL complete, for the most part, but I totally expect NHL to expand to 32 teams for some reason (Hamilton and Seattle) and probably have a 20 team playoff or something lol

How capable is Kansas City of supporting a team? Their name keeps popping up because of their old NHL team and the new Sprint Center.

They have a nice area, that's about it. I don't think there's any local ownership group interested. If I recall correctly they had a preseason game there a few years and almost no one showed up.

Kansas mayor doesn't want an nhl team

And I'd say it's not a good choice, area appears to be in a rather large decline

So it really just comes down to Quebec and Seattle then. I can't think of any other city that'd be capable and interested in supporting a team.

That group of Nordiques fans that travels around attending games in other arenas buys more tickets than anyone in Phoenix ever will.
Pretty much. They're even willing to sit in Nassau to see games!

I still think a 2 team expansion happens in the next decade or so. 32 teams allows for the 4-conference setup. Seattle and Houston are the two best cities without teams in the US right now. Hamilton is the best option left in Canada and has the potential to bring in a ton of money to the NHL.

As far as Houston goes, Les Alexander (part owner of the Aeros, owner of the Houston Rockets) has an agreement with the city that if an NHL team does comes to Houston, he has to own it. He tried to buy the Oilers in the late 90s and move them to Houston. So until he decides he wants a team again, dies, or gets out of the sports ownership game, there won't be a team in Houston. I think the rivalry with Dallas would help both teams a great deal.

Islanders are not moving away from the NYC area.

Columbus is nowhere near fixed. They don't have to pay rent (which was $9.5M) at their arena anymore but they're losing more than that each year. It helps but they're not out of the hole yet.

You recall incorrectly.

Exhibition at Sprint Center sets attendance mark for NHL preseason games played at neutral site

Dopey is correct about the mayor's statements. On top of that, the group that runs the arena has stated that the arena is more profitable without a pro sports team than if they had one.

Seattle isn't anywhere near ready. Quebec is the only city that has all 3 things needed: a viable temporary venue, an ownership group, and an approved future arena.

Well, he was actually right, in a way. It's just that they had another game since that was successful.

Of course the other problem is AEG ownership
Shit. Completely forgot about that game. You can't really blame KC for that game though. Why the hell would people from halfway across the country want to watch the Islanders play when people in NY don't even want to watch them?
EDIT: wow, The Nordiques owner really did want them out of town. Those proposed 95-96 uniforms are terrible
About the only bright spot of the Nordiques moving is that those jerseys never made it on the ice.

Just awful. They look like the shitty create-a-team jerseys you'd see in a video game.

I agree, Quebec is by far in the best position to get a team, but Seattle does seem like the most viable option for the next team that's forced to move. At this point, it's should almost be a foregone conclusion that the Nordiques could be back as soon as this fall.

Quebecor is going to launch a new network like RDS with the Nordiques as the main feature.
How is a Chicago fan so well informed about the situation in QC? I'm curious.

But yeah, pretty much everything said here was true, apart from the future tense for this new network. It already exists since last year ; it's called TVA Sports.

If Seattle had an ownership group and an arena plan in place, they'd be first in line without a doubt. Quebec City, much like Winnipeg, will win out only because they are the only player with all the ducks in a row. Given the almost zero possibilty of an owner stepping in to save the Coyotes and the outbursts in the Glendale meeting, it's almost a sure thing that the Nordiques will be back next season.

I spend a LOT of time researching the business side of sports. Kind of a hobby I guess.

My bad on the TV network. I remembering reading awhile back that the network would be launched when the team got there. Didn't realize it was already going.

Mainly because Wang was hatching a scheme to move the team and make some real estate money, I guess.

But really, it's the timberwolves. May as well just put Poochy on there

The NHL can reject Wang moving the team much like they did with the Blues potential move to Saskatoon in the 80's.

The Coyotes should have had Poochie on their jerseys.

A wonderful combination of two things nobody wants.

Wikipedia has both the home and away pics. Its bad

edit: oh wow, 95-96 was an all time failure year in terms of jersey design

-disney's "let's draw a third jersey"
-canucks pointless first shot at a red jersey
-"Burger" Kings
-Yogi Yellow Bruins
-Islanders Fishsticks
-the original photoshop that was the Lightning's original logo
