Class averages are usually in the 70's which is a C. though grading scale has nothing to do with class averages.
Who cares about undergrad? I'm talking graduate level classes Smelly.

Is that universal? I figured if 89.5% only gave him a B the class average must've been really high. But if that's just how the scale works everywhere, then ouch.

Teachers usually round up after .6. Some will at .5 if you talk to them.
But those are the "official" ones. Teachers can curve to where if 48% is the average, that essentially becomes the 70%, but most don't.

Science classes are generally the ones that grade the way you're thinking because of low averages. That's called curving the grade. Depends on the teacher. Some do because a bunch of students failing would reflect horribly on them.

Yeah I was replying to Fata's "scale is universal and has nothing to do with class averages", when the scale can obviously change based on class averages. At least that's what I'm assuming, because no prof will fail 80% of his class.
I mean, apparently 40% of all grades given are now A's. Which is super high. That was my point about "easy" schools.

A 40 would still be failing, often a D is also failing, when a teacher scales a test it's the grade the score that goes up, the scale doesn't really change. I don't know how Canadian grading works so I'm not sure if this is clear.
