NHL February |OT| FIRE ALL THE THINGS

At this point are any Leafs fan thinking that no matter who is to blame for the losing streak, Burke is looking like a questionable GM? If the coach isn't the issue, then the players that Burke has assembled aren't good enough, and that's on Burke. If the coach is the issue, then Burke has held on to Wilson for far too long, and that's on Burke too.

And a question like this arises from more than just the latest collapse. Burke is finishing up his 4th year as a GM (he started in November of 2008) and the Leafs just look bad. The prospect pool has taken an almost godlike overhaul but regardless the actual NHL squad is still just bad. Why can Tallon in Florida turn his squad around in one year while it takes Burke more than 4 years to even attempt to make the playoffs?

If no one minds, I've pretty much got next month's OT pretty much taken care of.

I was going to jump in simply because it's the 1st of March here and it was driving me crazy, but all I had was the idea of spamming that carter_coke.jpg that Relevant made earlier in the month.

Please do it, I'd love to see what you got in mind.

Indeed he is but sometimes he does stuff like this:

Now if only he could do that every game.....

Tallon HAD to spend $30M in the offseason so he had no choice but to bring in a bunch of talent. Florida already had some decent players(Weiss, etc) and adding so many solid veterans around them only made the team better. Toronto hasn't had the flexibility of $30M to spend in the offseason.

Burke could have done an offer sheet for Stamkos. Instead we get Little Tim and a Wilson extension.

Well I don't think Stamkos would've signed an offer sheet. And even if he was willing to sign one, Yzerman thought he was worth at least $7.5million. You want Stamkos on the roster for how much? $11 million? $12 million? An offersheet only works if the salary on the contract is more than Yzerman is willing to pay. That's too much cap space for any one player. And if Stamkos would've signed an offer sheet, and Yzerman was unable to match, do you think Yzerman and Burke could ever be trading partners ever again? There's no Keith Aulie for Carter Ashton deal in that scenario (a great trade for both teams). You risk pissing off your fellow GM when you poach a player of that calibre via an offer sheet. And again, even if Stamkos would've signed, remember that the dollar amount that it would've taken to acquire him would cost us four 1st-round picks in compensation to the Lightning. Does a team that lost the right to draft Seguin really want to give away their next four 1st rounders? Many of which could end up as lottery picks? Because hell, Stamkos is quite an amazing player, and yet Tampa Bay is still awful this year. It takes more than one good player to fix a mess like the Leafs.

I think it was the right decision to not even contemplate signing Stamkos to an offersheet, which I commend Burke for. I'm not talking about backing off. I'm talking about the thought not even crossing Burke's mind. And that's how it should be.

Also, yeah, signing Tim Connolly was a fucking dumb move, and so was extending Wilson. I used to defend the Connolly signing as a low risk, high reward move. But damn, when Connolly busts, he busts HARD. We wanted a stop gap number one centre. This guy can't even outplay Bozak for the number one centre job. That's not a knock against Bozak. I love the way Bozie has been able to admirably slot in between Lupul and Kessel. But Connolly should be ashamed that he has underperformed so spectacularly as to be relegated to our third line.

I forgot how to spell your name and I'm slyly posting at work. At least you actually ARE relevant though!

I have a feeling this game is going to look like the peewee hockey game from South Park. Players falling down, nobody doing anything, children crying, someone crapping their pants, etc.

Bleeding kids etc

You'd be paying him out the ass and would lose four 1st round picks.

Funny to think that Kessel has had such a strong season (at least offensively), but the Leafs would still be in a better position with Seguin/Hamilton in their system, instead. At least in my opinion.

:lol I was about to say it sucks you're at work until my brain outran my stupid to remember that would make sense. What do you do anyway. I mean you worked in Vancouver, but I can't remember what it was you were doing. I'm sure you mentioned it, it's eluding me though.

I await someone to wind up for a slapshot then trip over their feet and do a vaudeville style fall onto the ice.

Good point.

Duthie says: "Not a lot of scoreboard watching for either team."

REALLY?

We've got Edmonton vs. St. Louis and Buffalo vs. Anaheim. Toronto hopes Buffalo wins in overtime and gives Anaheim a point. Toronto doesn't care how Edmonton wins but we'd like the Oilers to get a victory.

^_^

That hit wasn't quite as bad as it looked at first glance.
