its an interesting point, being raised in a capitalist culture is going to ingrain some respect/desire for great wealth that could instill some 'right wing' views.... but im sure you can see the slip when it comes to dealing with a group of millionaires playing a game to factory workers making 10$/hr to survive.

The point of a union is to leverage the collective value of the workforce. How much the individuals make is irrelevant. I've been saying for YEARS now that videogame devs should be unionizing to end some of the shitty practices found in the industry, but there's the view that they shouldn't because they're "professionals." It's a symptom of mentality that unions are something that they really aren't. People just think they're trying to "steal" from their employers, but in reality it's just an effort to equalize bargaining power by preventing an employer from fracturing a workforce.

Damn right they need unions. I've worked in both video game production and animation and both industries get majorly fucking jipped for working standards and fair work conditions simply because they're "fun/creative" industries.
Unfortunately it's also the reason why video game industries in Australia get shafted... Nobody wants to pay the high wages and rewards (4 weeks leave etc) that comes with full time work in Australia.

Actually pro sports are in a bit reversed in this sense. Right now you see more "right wing" people as being pro union in this matter because things like a salary cap, revenue sharing are not a "free market" and the league is more socialist for imposing these regulations and trying to spread the wealth of bigger markets.
There is however, a two way street when it comes to unions. Unions are not only to give bargaining power to workers but to help in the long term job stability if its members. A good union has to keep the company health in its negotiations to enure jobs for its members. That's why with the American auto industry the UAW's concessions were integral to company health and recovery. You cannot be an effective union when your members are laid off.

Salary cap is perfectly fine within a free market as long as it is bargained for in a competitive marketplace. The problem with the NHL isn't the cap it's that there's no competitors.

With no cap you might as regress into an 8 team league as only those teams could even remotely compete financially. The rest would fold.
And lots of players would lose jobs.
Salary cap has been good for most of the players.
