NHL November 2016 |OT| #MakeOilersGreatAgain.

It's telling when more Rangers fans post here during the game than Canucks fans.

Calgary is a young team that overachieved one year, but it doesn't help that Elliott is being outplayed by his backup and their best players are slumping. I wonder if they regret firing Hartley.

What's the general date when teams more or less can guess if they make the playoffs by the end of the year? Was it by the end of November?

As in the top 8 usually stay in the top 8.

The bubble teams are hard to predict naturally but by the Christmas break you can make solid guesses and usually only be wrong on maybe one of them. For the bad teams, you know much earlier - Friedman points out that teams 4 or more points out of a playoff spot on November 1st almost never make it.

It's one thing to be riding PDO when CF is relatively solid, as it was through October. It's another thing when possession is tilted solidly against you.

The "good" news is that slide does coincide with some key injuries, so the hope would be that a returning Kreider and Buchnevich would help.

The problem with that is that the Rangers are clearly being obtuse about whatever Kreider's issue is, and that's rarely a good thing. If it's a concussion, it must have been something he played with because there was no obvious cause for him to be out. And that's worrisome.

Yes, these are both troubling things. As great as we are offensively and along with Hank finding his normal form and Raanta being a boss, we've been playing sloppy and the D is still a very real concern that can and will cost us games against better teams. We aren't putting up 5 on everyone all season. Our weaknesses will show soon. Pens and Habs are the scary teams in the East to me. Caps always because of our relationship. I won't take any Devils or Flyers games for granted either. Lot of tests coming up, and we wont win them all.

Kreider being out so long is starting to really suck. Both him and Buch being out twice now... both cause for concern. Especially since Kreider started off in beast mode, hitting that next level like Hayes and Miller possibly, and Buch was coming along real nicely on his last games. Lingering back spasms can't be good. Plus whatever it is Kreider has. Leaving Edmonton was a bad sign. Where'd he go? Vancouver for a top specialist? They didn't say back to NY. Give us something! I get why they don't but it's stressful, lol.

Buch's back spasms coinciding with our only Russian speaker's injuries. Hmmmmmm. =P

McDavid hasn't scored in a while. When he slumps so too do the Oilers.
McDavid is more of a set up guy but he should shoot more. Too often he's looking for that pretty pass when he's already in a decent shooting spot. Especially if they want to have a rowdy like Lucic or Maroon playing with him who can head to the net and get some garbage goals. Just shoot Connor.

He also needs to get better on faceoffs but that's just not being physically mature yet. Can't expect a teenager to be as strong as the other vet centers.

This is what I'm talking about with regards to how the Rangers are playing lately, with roughly the same results, compared to how they were playing earlier in the season:

some intriguing updates on the Olympics coming out now

apparently the NHL has offered to OK PyeongChang if the NHLPA agrees to extend the CBA

on the other hand the IIHF still doesn't seem optimistic about the NHL attending at this point

There are what, 100 to 120 NHL players that would the the Olympics ? Why would the other 600 players care about the NHL proposal ?

Anyway, the NHL is just using the Olympics as leverage (some would say blackmail), which is a bit disgusting.

It impacts money for everyone, but regardless the scrubs who stay behind care A LOT about a 2-3 week vacay in the middle of the season. ;)
And they tend to care about it like fans would regardless

It is a bit greasy to use Oly participation as a carrot to extend the CBA, but the PA has been using the IOC and IIHF as leverage to get the NHL to participate knowing full well that it negatively impacts the league far more than it helps them.

No one would say blackmail. Because it isn't. It's leverage for the NHL, as otherwise they see more risk than benefit.

in my headcanon, the Penguins will quip back "Enjoy hosting Donald for the next 4 years."

Then the Capitals will say, "At least D.C. didn't vote for him, unlike Pennsylvania"

Then the Pens will throw back "At least Pennsylvania can vote!"

It's the players who want to go the olympics. There is really no benefit for owners to agree to the olympics unless they work out some sort of a side deal. They're paying the players to play in their local markets, not risk injury and disrupt the NHL schedule to go have fun on the other side of the globe.

How long of an extension to the CBA is the NHL looking for?

There's 6 years left right now.

Isn't that already built-in to the CBA? Like I think that there's an option where if both sides agree, they can extend the CBA for 1 or 2 years.

Whatever the deal, it's a surprise turnaround. Over the last couple of days the media was convinced that the NHL in 2018 olympics was not going to happen. The owners really didn't want it.

I still don't think the owners want it, but they just want to pass the buck onto the PA so that if/when they don't end up going, they can blame the players.

I figured it was, wasn't sure on how long an extension would be allowed.

If letting them frolic in South Korea for a couple of weeks means they get an extra year or two of the current CBA, and a better chance of avoiding work stoppage, I guess it ain't too bad. Injury risk is the big hurdle though.

I wonder how much player revolt played a factor in the olympic decision. When guys like Ovechkin says he's playing in the olympics no matter what, that potentially opens a huge can of worms. He's going to ignore his contractual obligation and leave? What happens if lots of others followed? Owners finally agreeing to go to the olympics could be to avoid a lot of owner/player conflict.

I cant help but feel that the NHL are just trying to squeeze out as much as possible from the leverage they have. The Olympics might be a terrible deal short term. But it is essential for the growth of the sport, especially when the next two games are in Asia.

is nhl 17 worth buying for to be a pro mode?

BAP is fun, but it's not to the level of detail in Road to the Show on MLB: The Show or MyCareer on NBA 2k.

I wouldn't buy it for that solely, and definitely not at full price. That being said, Franchise mode got a huge upgrade, and EASHL is a thing people play too. lol

The NHL can opt out in 2019. What they're offering isn't so much of an "extension" as it is a "we won't bail on the CBA early" sort of thing.

This is a thing.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is going medieval as part of a new marketing campaign for the free-to-play mobile strategy game "Throne: Kingdom at War."

Ovechkin is one of four internationally renowned athletes who are joining together to promote the player-vs.-player combat game. Also part of the medieval-themed "Brotherhood of the Wolf" are Tony Parker of the NBA's San Antonio Spurs, former mixed martial arts middleweight champion Anderson Silva and Spanish professional soccer player Fernando Torres of Atletico Madrid.
