Is the familiar Griffy in the official guide?
I swear I've browsed through the list of familiars and couldn't find him.

Also, can you have two similar familiars? Or does one have to evolve first before you could get the pre-evolved version?

Not in the guide or the Wizard's companion.

Holy crap, the amount of grinding I am doing for Errand 78 (part 2 of it) is driving me insane. I haven't even gotten 1 of the items in question for the formula after fighting the supposed correct mobs for like 2 hours now.

I saw that errand, read that someone leveled from 65 to 99 trying to farm up the items, and said to myself: No thanks.

Alchemy in general missed the mark for me this game. Item drops, even with the merit reward are just low enough for me to not want to bother with it. That and it makes no sense to me for alchemy formulas that are readily available in the Wizard's Companion to not show up in the alchemy interface.

I'm just so set on getting Platinum on this game. I just hope there's nothing after this errand that's even more ridiculous. I just hate alchemy stuff in games in general I guess.

The one errand where I have to bring a guy a small mechanical creature, a Cog creature, and a Large mechanical creature.... How do I catch one of those big ass Robots?

I'm past that part but its been nagging at the back of my head.

Same way you catch any other familiar. Just gotta get lucky and have the hearts appear for you to serenade. Good news is Tin-Man and his evolutions actually make for a pretty good tank familiar. Gave the one I caught just for that quest to Swaine and it ended up really working out.

I fought at least 100 of those things. I'm seriously overpowered right now. Enemy's in new areas are running away at the sight of my pecs.

Literally buying a new PS3 to replace my old ylod'd one to play this, Tales of Graces F and later, Tales of Xillia. Should be getting one next week, pretty goddamn hyped up. X360 just won't satisfy my JRPG cravings with shitty Lost Odyssei and Blue Dragons.

The game is finally starting to drag for me. I'm at
the ice village

Same here. I recommend going to
the vault of tears
. It's a pretty fun little dungeon and was a good break to the typical dungeon running you have been doing. After that I was reinvigorated and blasted through the
the ice village
really quickly.

I need to do an errand for a
fairy
that wants to me to find three sticks that bat monsters stole. But I am way overleveled and kill them in one hit, and I have to blind these monsters, which most of the time doesn't work. What do I do?

Finally got the game!

I'm currently 3 hours in and loving it so far.
The graphics are gorgeous, it feels like your playing a Ghibli film.
The battle system is pretty basic but it works well.
The story & characters are great, Drippy is annoying at first but he's growing on me.
I'm hoping things get more challenging soon, as the game does hold your hand early on..

Why does Drippy call me Bunting?

Question for anyone that ordered the strategy guide from Amazon.ca, did your copy come with the Gold Hurley DLC code packed in with the guide?

My copy should arrive tomorrow. Very exciting!

Interested to see if this will top Resonance of Fate as my favourite HD JRPG.

He called him Cry Baby Bunting first thing, and keeps suggesting he's a crybaby.

Set the AI to do nothing, blind, then attack. Note that if one of them gives you a capture opportunity, they are no longer blind so you'll have to blind them again before killing them.

Went to pick up a copy, city of totally sold out ( state capital) Guy at JB hifi told me they got 7 regular editions per store from Namco ( 3 stores in the city centre ) and only just had enough to cover pre-orders.

Course I didn't pre-order as I figured with the extra week Namco might ship more than a handful to an entire country. Eta now is another week.

My copy will arrive tomorrow aswell. Cant wait to dig into this game.
It reminds me in looks on the old greats like Grandia, Dragon Quest 8 etc.
Also the pokemonesc feature in interesting. On top of that I am a huge Ghibli fan so my hype level is massive.
I really hope i dont get dissapointed.

Reading the past few sites has kept my hopes fairly high though. Also Brad's (GB) love for the game was reassuring.

I beat the game, working on post game content. Here are my pros and cons.

+ The classic JRPG formula returns.
+ Beautiful world. Seriously. The world map is gorgeous, too. Exploring it like the good old days of JRPG goodness... I MISS THIS!
+ Amazing music. It could've used a few more themes but I'm satisfied with it. The English voice acting was great as well.
+ Incredibly fun combat system, great animations and I never thought I'd like another monster capturing game after Pokemon Red and Blue, but here I am loving another.
+ Perfect pacing. You're never in a dungeon for too long, hell, you're never in ANY place for too long. You're seeing new places all the time.
+ The puns. Oh god, the puns.

- Not enough voice acting. Plenty of scenes where it has some, and then randomly cuts back to text. This can get a little irritating.
- The dialogue does get really cheesy when it comes to the later parts of the story, to the point of being slightly cringe-worthy. But the game is for children, so I understand. Japanese people are hippies.
- The Casino cheats. I don't care what anyone says. FUCK THAT CASINO! It's no fun to play in! Graaaah!

Oh, meant to ask this: how's the story? I really like the way Ghibli movies are, usually optimistic but still have their melancholic, sometimes downright depressing moments. Tvtropes page of the game mentioned it being melancholic, and I really like me some tearjerkers.

Platoon is the way to go. You might lose a few, but I built up over 100k coins in about an hour. That game is addictive, as well. You have to turn the sound, off, though... stupid repeated use of voices :(

I don't know why people keep saying this. The battle system alone would turn most children off to this game and was absolutely not designed for them in mind.

It's nothing too heavy. There's only one part so far that seemed a little heavy and that was dealing with an older sibling making a pretty big sacrifice fro a younger sibling.

Well then they missed the mark. I would see most children struggling against the combat in this game.

Maybe. Kids are pretty good at games, though. I beat Megaman 2 when I was 4 years old. Regardless, this game felt like it was made for people like me who missed playing classic JRPGs. I'm not bothered if they developed it with children in mind.

Alright, thanks. Should be great nonetheless. I really, really liked the scope of DQ8's world and the feeling of adventure, from reading the posts here I assume I can expect the same kind of stuff with Ni no Kuni.

Is there a point at which this game really picks up? I've just reached Al Mamoon and while I love the visuals and the soundtrack (and have enjoyed pursuing sidequests) but I'm not really feeling the game so far (it doesn't help that Oliver is just a bit too twee for my tastes, I'm already sick of him shouting "NEATOOOO" after every battle :p ).

Am I missing something? The battle system really isn't doing anything for me so far. I take it it'll get better once a character or two join my party.

Does the AI tactics reset on every battle?

They aren't supposed to but I have seen them reset. Don't know what caused that.

The game takes FOREVER to get going but you're amlost there. I started enjoying it not much farther from where you are.

You haven't seen anything yet, man. The game only gets bigger and more things come into play as it progresses.

Decided to replay with japanese dub. Is there some missable things in

?
Havent catched any monsters there in first playthrough.

Cleared out all of the bounties as soon as I got on board the ship, but man, after defeating that Rock monster/Column thing that guards that archway? The enemies beyond were damn near kicking my ass. I can see what you all were saying about the difficulty spike. Either that or I need some better weapons or armor.

When is everyone upgrading their Griffy to the final form? I think he can do it at lvl 15, but I'm concerned I will miss a spell if I do it at that lvl.

Pretty sure I morphed him to a Griffigerator (Ice magic obviously) around 18 or 19. I wanted to make sure his lvl 2 had all abilities unlocked beforehand. That's what I'm doing with all of my Fams before I morph them. I try to make pit stops every handful of battles to fill em all up with treats as well.

I always forget to give them treats. As for the lvl I did some research and their are some familiars that get their last ability in the mid to late 20's

Alright, so it should first be said that I'm loving this game; the story, the characters, and, my god, those graphics, are all top notch, but I'm getting very frustrated with the combat.

The typical combat experience is actually pretty enjoyable. I like the semi-RT feel and all, and switching between familiars, figuring out which is best against your enemy, etc, but the bosses are where the issues really come to light. Having entered the fourth city, I've noticed that Oliver has soloed the last 4 bosses (at least). I'll be the first to admit that it could be my problem, but I've tried different tactics, switched familiars between characters, read for some tips, and nothing seems to help. From much of what I've read, I'm actually a few levels (2-4) higher than many are when they're traversing the same areas.

I know that none of this information is new, but I feel the need to vent. When going through the tutorials, I felt that it was explained that general combat worked something like this:

Oliver casts spells. Different familiars can fill different roles: defense, physical attacks, magical attacks, etc. (I know it's more involved than this, but for the sake of simplicity...) During combat, as I understood it, you should be switching from familiar to familiar to character for attacks, support, and defense; however, if you see a big attack coming, I've found that you have barely enough time to switch familiars, let alone switch and go defensive. On top of that, your companions don't defend either, so are you expected to manage all of them in a pseudo-RT combat system?

Speaking of companions, the AI is atrocious. Again, I've tried different tactics, swapping familiars, and a few other tips I've found online, and the companions continue to do the same thing: blow their mana pool and then run up to melee range of the boss. Like I said, at least the last 4 bosses have been beaten by Oliver/Mitey with Mitey punching and defending, and Oliver healing. These make for slow fights.

I know there are things I've not tried, but the fact is, it shouldn't be such a pain. I'm either overlooking something painfully obvious, or the combat system is, frankly, terrible. I love this game- It's an early contender for my GotY, but this is starting to ruin it. I can only imagine it getting harder as levels go up.

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions

The only things missable are bestiary entries. (and they are very minimal, 2 locations).
-Overworld path from Perdia to Miasma Marshes.
-Mobs in the 3 major towns.
2 other locations become off limits until post game, but you can eventually come back.

One of the things I love about the game, so nice to not use a guide and still get a plat. Not that it's easy either way, lol.

I'm missing spell #25 and #51, where are they? I'm in the last dungeon. And can you ever get back to
Nevermore? After beating Shadar his castle turns green with a lake on it, and its not raining, but I can't land nor teleport there.

Use L2/R2 to pick your actions in combat instead of the D-pad.

Another trick that I've learned, that everyone else may have figured out a long time ago, is that you can press down on the d-pad during combat to instantly switch back to Oliver/Esther/Swaine, and up to switch back to their last dispatched familiar. Pretty useful, but I might be the last to know.
