? On a lot of the boss fights, you have to wait until Drippy pops in and tells you their weakness before it even has any effect, even if you already know what it is.

Its just a regular enemy on the field just north of Ding Dong Dell, you have to fly to get there.
Cant miss it, its the largest enemy Iv seen in the game. Taller than the damn trees. Big antlers, soul-less eyes.
it reminds me of a certain boss from FF that takes hours to beat....
Ok good, I have recruited a couple of familiars just doing some battles, I think I'm not gonna obsess over it and move on. Too bad one of the subquest requires me to catch that...cactus..banana...thing and is one of the few that I'm missing.
So I'm 13 hours in (taking my time, just about to get the boat) and pretty much breezed until I did a random hunt and got my ass handed to me. I was forced to really explore my familiars' tricks, etc., take advantage of switching leaders and read through the creatures section of the wizard's companion. I officially love this game.
Question about familiar strategy early on(like on the way to the third city early). I like Esther's original familiar, the go-go ducky thing. It's the only caster I have that's viable in terms of pedestrian physical attack and defense to go along with some nice spells. Problem, as anyone else who made it to Esther knows, is that she's hopeless at using him. I resigned her to "cast no abilities" duty, which makes him useless. Do I just take him away from her? On the other hand, Oliver is a caster as well. I'd like to get better use out of the duck, basically.
Yeah, I just recently unlocked this. I imagine it will help a bit, but it won't even things out. I'll repost after I've gotten pretty competent with that ability.
indeed, I wanted to 100% this game but I'm not sure anymore. I stayed like 30 minutes in the desert trying to tame one of those fucking mobs full of banana.
As I posted before, they especially suck when you get the hearts on the very first one you kill, switch to Esther, and Oliver proceeds to cast fucking Cloudburst.
it happened to me only one time, switched to Esther but Oliver used a miracle move - raged after. I don't think I have Cloudburst tho, if it gets like that I'm going to say "fuck off" to those quests and trophies.
-tank mobs instead of sending in familiars that can actually do something.
-actually switch from a tanky familiar to themselves just so that they can use their own weak attacks.
-either not heal at all (when you have it set to keep us healthy), or blow through mana to heal non stop every time you are missing any health.
so true. thought there was some tactic or something to fix this, come on game.
I also don't understand why I can't change tactics in the main menu but only during the battle. maybe I didn't see the option in the menu, at least I hope so.
here's a big problem, can't catch those enemies 'cause they are so fucking fast. seriously, where is that spell and when do I get it.
right now I'm trying to farm an item for a quest but it's hard as hell since they keep running and they are a lot faster than me.
Yeah I read how strong he was, I really dont want to break the game like that even though I like how cool he is. Guess that means damn near free game instead.

The reason it never evens out is because sometimes bosses use abilities sooner than the all out defense option cooldown is up. It also doesn't work with whoever you're controlling. For big area attacks, you have to quickly hit "defend" on the character you're controlling and then hit square and hope that you did it in time (or hit square and then cycle to defend...). It also is not very useful for familiars that use evade.
The most unforgivable thing about the combat though is the fact that when you want to switch to a new leader, it doesn't allow you to automatically switch to the familiar they are using. It sends them back, only for you to have to send them back out again. Being able to jump directly to a familiar in play would have gone a very long way to fixing a lot of the problem.
I also don't see what the problem is with Griffy. That's something that kind of helps with the horribad AI. It's no autocorrect, but it helps. Griffy is also not an isolated case since the Dino familiars are similar or better in their own ways. Griffy is just early-mid broken.

I keep thinking "why is this happening?" every time I read this, but I realized that I had Oliver's AI set to not use abilities since the beginning of the game, because I always wanted to be the one managing his MP.

Yeah, I was so happy doing all the sidequests... and then this one shows up. Now I depend on random chance?
Apart from that thingie that improves your chances catching familiars, are there any other solid tips? My hat is off to the guy who got the platinum on this thread.

So, I'm trying to figure out which of the final evolutions to take for my Wattee (electric fish thing). They seem to be roughly equivalent in stats, but there seems to be a pretty big difference in the tricks they learn, and I'm not sure if any of them can be made up for with gems.
About catching familiars and moving on; there are some familiars that you might want to be on the lookout for early on--this is an outlier case though. There's a quest much later on that wants
fully evolved versions of the basic Honker, Small Fry (I think that's the name; it's the baby troll looking thing with rocks around Old Smokey) and a Wisp.
Unless you want to spend time backtracking later on, as well as about an hour leveling them up, you might want to get those out of the way.
Griffy, Dino, Dino (or three Dinos) FTW. If you're still struggling, grind a bit until a fully evolved Dino is level 24 I think, and you'll be able to hit it for 1200+ damage if you picked the red version. It also helps if Oliver has the last merit award (not all of them, just the last one).

Turn off the in game sound and start listening to your favorite music. As far as a plat goes, I have no idea how anyone does that, especially because of how awful making everything from Alchemy is (it's also inexcusable that the recipie does not appear after you've done a mix and match discovery). I'm also not sure exactly what the taming award is supposed to grant, but the bonus doesn't even seem like it really does anything at all. So you had a 5% chance to tame something? Now you have a 6%!

I'm just over 8 hours in and just about to enter the volcano with all available sidequests done. I can't wait to start catching familiars and customizing my team. Thanks to the posters above for all advice on feeding and growth. Now I just need to figure out the best way to farm stat items so I'm ready to stuff my guys full as soon as I catch them.
Now, I haven't had too much time to full delve into combat with more than one party member, but I have to say that so far I don't understand everyone's complaints about Esther and party AI. So far all she does in battle is send out her default familiar who then proceeds to beat face and heal every so often. The only time she died was during the final trial, and that was when I was controlling her and didn't heal in time. Maybe the flaws will show after I've used her more or get into more difficult battles, but so far I have no real complaints.

4 hours in and I'm feeling that the game would be better without the familiar's shit and with other combat system, only Oliver like a Wizard and the other companions with another classes the game would be much better. I'm loving Ni no Kuni, but I cannot evade this fact.

The basic snacks seem so inefficient. I'm thinking more about the 2 square ones. I'll have to spend some time with the guide looking at forage points and monster drops.

That's just it though. The time you spend hunting for those rarer foods may as well be spent on just giving them the basic stuff. You can also make carrot cakes from store bought items. I think you might be able to make most of the other similar second tier stat boosters that way too.

Where I am at now,it's 12 all together,it can get pretty hectic hehe...
Not crazy about the part I am in right now,the area is cool but the quest they make you do is kinda meaningless and drags on a bit...I want to head back to the Cove and talk to Horace now that I saw the back of the instruction manual, like someone told me the other day but thought he meant the WC...
I just haven't played many RPGs, or at least JRPGs, over the last few years and I hadn't really given this game much thought at all. But I think I'm going to have to pick it up, the word of mouth is excellent.
