Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch |OT|

I also finished Ni no kuni earlier today and I had an absolute blast. The last third of the game was particularly fantastic as it propelled me towards the finish with great worldbuilding, twists, and revelations. Awesome game.

it felt a little rushed after the defeat of shadar
maybe i just didn't want it to end
all those zodiarchs and i didn't get to kick most of their asses
and that annoying parrot

goddamn it is so depressing when I've been using a familiar for so long and it's finally ready to evolve and I'm all "i...i don't know if I can, dude. you'll go back to level 1! level 1! You're like my go-to familiar. What? No I don't care about your life and what's best for you!"

Ha! I would feel the same way. But I'd always have another familiar that was just as strong so I could use that one while my favorite leveled up again.

you get 10% stat boost from affinity
Ah, I see. Starting stats for 3rd tier morph are only based on 2nd tier levels and not stats right? So I could still morph them to 3rd tier and give both dinoceros to Oliver for leveling and they would still come out the same regardless?

Most bosses can easily be beaten if you kill them with magic in the distance and constantly heal party members and refill you MP meter. I have more trouble with the regular enemies than I do the bosses.
true, I killed almost all the bosses with ORIBA casting shit on them without getting hit.

Start casting veil and hunt down Tokos then tbh :p
but Tokos are rare, really. couldn't find one in like 30 minutes, on that island.
maybe later on there are better places but that's pretty much late game.

Platoon is definitely broken. My first game I won 1.1 million chips or so, had 2.6 million after about half an hour.

i don't think it's directly based on level?
since the stats from tier1 influence tier3 stats too

looking at my tokos
a toko i evolved from toko(maxed) > tokotoko(maxed) > tokocold = mid 700s evasion with gears at lv 1
compared to another one that went from tokoto(maxed > tokocold = mid 500s/low600 evasion with gears at lv3

so the base stat from metamorphosis are either stat based, or the game keeps track of your levels from tier 1 also

So I could still give both dinoceros to Oliver for leveling and they would still come out the same regardless?
i think so, if all the conditions are the same?

Has anyone here played both the JPN and NA versions of the game? I'm wondering if you now have 2 sets of trophy lists in your profile. I wouldn't mind replaying this in the future for another platinum. I have to finish the NA version first of course. ;)

The stat boost is in effect only when they're equipped, switch their familiars and you'll see the stats change immediately.

I don't know what Tokos are or where they might be, so that would be difficult. Probably in some area too high for me at the moment! I just finish Hamelin.

I have other familiars that are strong, but not with his specific strengths. The other ones that could potentially be useful in that slot are being used by my allies. Anyway, I'm just fussin'... I know I'll metamorph his dumb ass as soon as he hits the right level to learn the last of his abilities in his second form. Just always find myself hesitating right before I do it. The worst is when all my best guys decide to be 'metamporph time' right at the same point, so then I have to decide who to do it to first :p

tokos are like the metal slimes of dragon quest
tends to run away upon encounter
gives 2000xp per kill

if u finished hamelin, u are definitly high enough to fight them
(they are on 3 islands NE of ding dong dell)

So I love how the game maker's philosphy on the final boss is "Forget everything you've done for the entire game, just go get some Demos and boost them to level 60, or else chaoschaoschoaschaoschaoschoaschaoschaoschoaschaoschaoschoaschaoschaoschoas".

That shit is lazy.

oh great metal slimes are the world's biggest headache causers for me. Probably make more exp just fighting normal battles then trying to chase after enemies who run away after five seconds into a fight :p

So, I'm like 20 hours in, currently
back in time
and while the difficulty feels right on, I'm not using a lot of familiars at all. I got Oliver's starting 2(mite and the cat), Esther's original familiar and the bonehead, all 2nd level. That's it! All these guys gaining levels and I never put them out there. Go to Esther's duck for magic and stick with the mite and the cat, that's been the strategy.

What are some good familiars to level for where I am right now? I've captured a bunch, they all seem relatively inferior.

they are way easier to kill in this
esp if you sneak up on them

recommended Anglerfish before and i'm sticking to that
very good damage dealer until you get dinoceros (3 of them)
banana cat sucks after 2nd metamorph, only reason to keep it is for revive spell

I wouldn't give them both to Oliver simply because having two Dinoceros on the field at once would be much more advantageous. 10% isn't all that much where this creature is concerned anyway. He's ridiculously strong after a bit of leveling, and has sickeningly high defense. If you're looking to steamroll everything you come across, that's the ticket.

Having a large backlog = waiting for some price cuts for me. Besides the Wizard edition, the regular print isn't going to be difficult to find and eventually go on sale, right?

well it won't hurt to try, I s'pose. Off to Toko Island!

meh I'll farm Tokos when I get to a place where you don't 40 minutes to find one.

fight on this small island
they pop so often there
only 4 pop points all close to eachother
all you have to do is run up and down

you're awesome providing pictorial evidence

on the PS4, you'll be able to simply SHARE the evidence with me with the share button! *swoon*

Don't worry, you're not the only one. A lot of people were confused by that, myself included. It's just a poorly handled sequence.

It's pretty sudden (seriously, it happens in like 5 seconds) and I think that was kind of their intention to confuse people since even the party didn't really know how it happened despite it being kindasorta explained later.
(though it would have been a better idea to have the character acknowledge the human soldiers that weren't pigs anymore after everything getting foggy/misty... or at least I don't remember them wondering what was going on which was odd. It allowed for some nice reveals and character development though. The explanation is also pretty mysterious at that point in the game. ~_~)

After 20 hours finally got the ability to fast travel. Then barely an hour later I get the ability to fly. They definitely should've have given you Travel earlier. But now I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the side stuff I have access to. I made it a point to always do all the side stuff possible before proceeding with the story up to now but now it looks like that might be impossible.

Also, is there a consensus as to what the best familiars are? I've been rolling with the 6 familiars that you get as part of the story along with Griffy and have been immediately dumping everything I capture in the retreat. I also don't like how whenever you're ready to metamorphose to a familiar's final form you have to pick 1 of 2 choices. No matter what I end up picking I'm going to second guess myself as to whether I made the right decision or not. Right now Griffy is the only familiar I have that option for and I'm not sure which one to use.

so what to do at the casino, I just bought 2k chips and won 11k from platoon. how is this broken? To get 11k I had to won 3 games in a row and it's not easy at all. edit: k, you can abuse AI, going to try this now.

I think I had a lot of luck with Toko's, Tokotoko's and Tokotocold's

I've encountered them quite often. Especially the Tokotoko's. All my partymembers are at around lvl 82 thanks to the Toko family. I used the Toko's to lvl up familiars in a fast way.

The party members enjoyed the huge exp too, I guess.

So you guys, Imma watch some Ghibli movies tomorrow to prepare for monday. What do you recommend to get in that Ni No Kuni mood?

Like many people here, I love everything but the combat/AI which is starting to drag everything down with it. I'm beginning to wonder, should I kick the difficulty down to easy? It should make the shortcomings of combat less of an issue. Normal battles are already squash matches in my favor, unless I wander into the wrong neighborhood where it's a one-sided affair in their favor. Boss battles are currently tough, but mostly due to things outside my control like bad partner AI and animation priority making it hard to defend against big hits, which doesn't feel fair. And the sentiment on the forums here seems to be get dinos, farm tokos. On the other hand, I'm worried if the game is too easy, it could become a bore, though a very pretty bore.

Castle in the Sky is a classic kids-going-on-fantastic-adventures movie that fits this game's tone. Howl's Moving Castle has lots of wizards and magic and creatures which fits with the game's theme. And there's always Spirited Away, which is mother f'ing Spirited Away.

My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
Spirited Away

Thank me later.

There are of course many more amazing Studio Ghibli movies, but I think these most fit the "mood" of this game.

Forgetting Laputa, man! That one definitely fits the mood of the game too.

Edit: Beaten. Howl's Moving Castle is an adapted work, so not really a Ghibli original.

How does the EXP distribution work?
Oliver was ahead of Mitey for a while, but then I got a Game Over, and now Mitey's ahead of Oliver

I barely used Oliver prior to the latest Game Over, but he was still ahead.
After the Game Over, I've been using him more often, but he's still behind.
