Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch |OT|

Where in post game?

I think it's after a Derwin quest. (his final one which doesn't require you to bring him Familiars woo!)

I find that by giving the other party members strong physical damage Familiars helps with the MP-drain issue later on. Early on though when she just had her Drongo, Esther was just randomly casting Thunderspark or Healing Tear all the time, lol.

How do you guys cope with this catching system? Am I doing something wrong? I spend half hour trying to catch a familiar I want sometimes.

You're not doing anything wrong. You just need to get lucky. I don't really pay any mind to whether I tame something or not and at the moment I have about 100+~ unique Familiars. Some gave me issues though like Jabber/his second form. Sometimes I've had two tames in one battle! Haven't had enough luck to get three yet though, lol. Oh, one thing that bothers me is that sometimes I get the same Familiars with the hearts like 4 times in a row that I -don't need-. Like I'd be trying to get Toko and Thumbelemur wants me to tame it every single time!

At around 55~ hours with quite a lot to do still, but storywise I'm not sure.
Just assembled the Mornstar completely and can open purple chests... might backtrack
. From what I've seen, the story gets really good when it gets into 'endgame' mode.

Also,
I got the Jack of Hearts merit bonus and somehow I feel like it didn't help at all when it comes to taming, haha.

It doesn't need to be turn-based but any possible sequel needs to have a combat overhaul. There are some really good ideas in there it's just they're all hidden behind a giant wall of glaring flaws.

Yeah, no joke. That awkward moment when your pokemon is stuck behind another one endlessly trying to walk straight through it.

With all the positive reception (bar the Wizards Edition debacle) I have hopes that a sequel is a strong possibility.

Apparently all it does is make enemies more likely to succumb to serenade, which I have never seen one resisted....

Well, the actual effect from what I've seen is a 20% increase to the original capture rate. (not an additional 20% but 20% of the original rate)

From what I've seen though, it's not as effective as I'd like. I almost wish there was a bit of a percentage multiplier like FFXIII-2's system with the synch rate or whatever.

Has anyone successfully downloaded this from PSN?
I'm in the UK, have been trying all day - 5 failures for various reasons (2 download failed, 1 corrupt data when trying to install, 1 corrupt data after install, 1 install completed successfully but game nowhere to be found)

Am trying again now, but I can't see the problem - I have over 100GB free space on my HDD but no joy.

I have. Took a long time. Started it during the day yesterday and it was all done when I woke up this morning. Played for 5 hours today.

Not sure what the problem is for you- sorry. Maybe it's an EU thing? I'm in Canada.

So far it seems to be doing more than okay, if not beyond expectations for sure. Though if they do announce plans for a sequel... how long before we get it and what will it be on?

Here's hoping that we get a "Level-5 Announces Ni no Kuni Sequel" thread at some point in the next few months, lol.

I said turned based because I can't trust Level 5 to make a competent AI system.

I think the game is doing exceptionally well.

Seems to be #1 seller across all of Europe. Online sites have been sold out, stores have been sold out, it got good reviews, good word of mouth, and PSN is selling it online in their store.

It is probably doing WAYYYY better than Level 5 probably predicted.

I've seen a few people say that, but like, looking at IGN's walkthrough, for example, it states:
"Enemies are more susceptible to Esther's Serenade."

Fake edit: N/M, just checked the prima guide and you're right. But if it's on at 25% (the highest), it only increases to 30%, so 1% would increase to... 1.2%? Not that helpful.

The AI, as bad as it is, is only the tip of the iceberg. You do have a point, though.

I'm not sure what you would consider to be worse than the AI. There's Oliver's awful design, a typically generic story and some collision issues, but the AI is easily the most annoying aspect of the game. More like the largest portion of the iceberg. An iceberg that could sink a luxury cruiser.

What's the best way to make money in this game? I vaguely remember something to do with the casino, but honestly I'm not even sure what the trick is.

You play Platoon to get millions of chips and then buy the items from the Cashier to make tons of cash. It's pretty easy after a while, but it's annoying when the dealer beats you when you're just about to make 100-300k, lol. (But that's how gambling works so eh) Always play through a set of six games and you will be swimming in chips.

where do I reclaim the preorder bonus familiars??

Later on in the game after you get the ability to tame, I believe.

You know they're talking about the combat only, right? And Oliver's design imo is pretty fitting. He's a plain little boy in a pretty colorful but simple outfit. I'm not sure what you expected from him design-wise... and the story is pretty heartwarming. I love how it's been shaping up so far! The twists were seen from a mile away, but that's normally the case, lol.

The quest/bounty board has some nice cash (and weapon) rewards, I think. I just take all of them on in each new town and do them where I can.

No I'm talking about the sheer laundry list of problems strictly limited to the game's combat mechanics. Things like:

-Cooldown timers on defense actions vs. chain casting enemies
-Random things that cause spell intterrupts yet my MP is still consumed
-Buffs stunning allies when the spell goes into effect
-Juggling loops
-Defense not being instantanious
-All out defense only working on your companions
-All out defense causing party members to switch out familiars with a higher DEF causing them to not defend in time
-Pathing

These are all little issues that pile up to make one big mess.

3DS would be a safe bet
esp if they want to strike while the iron is still hot

nothing egregious with WKC's AI imo

Going back to handhelds would be kind of bleh... but it'd be okay if they went with a 3DS/PS3(PS4) deal like with the DS/PS3 thing they did this time around.

2. The DS version didn't sell very well as far as I know. So I hope not. DAT PS4 grafix!!!1

500,000 copies sold according to Level-5. It did pretty well, but as far as I know, it sold a lot partly because stores discounted the DS one severely because it was so huge and wasn't selling that fast. But keep in mind that there are also a TON of DS owners out there in Japan compared to PS3. T_T

I stand corrected. Still, please God no handhelds. Level 5 seems to have a fantastic new IP on their hands. Hate for it to go strictly handhelds.

As with most Level 5 games.... the story isn't good, and that is the problem. I enjoyed the gameplay, though.

Hah, ain't that the truth.

The post I was replying to didn't appear to be talking about combat only, because "tip of the iceberg" implies a multitude of issues beyond a few minor annoyances on top of the awful AI. I just read their next post, with the list and those issues. While annoying, they are nowhere near as outright fun killing as the AI is. I don't disagree with the list, although I've never been hit with a juggle loop, nor have I ever found defense or all out defense to not be instant. The issue is when a non boss enemy starts up their casting animation. Often hitting a defense option doesn't work, because you're beyond that window. The biggest flaw with attack and defense is the whole crap scrolling menu. Unless that's what was being mentioned?

I'd also add the inability to switch directly to another character's familiar that is already in play. Instead, you have to switch to that character after the familiar is sent back, only to send it back out again.

Oliver's design is terrible. He's supposed to be 13 (lol?!!), yet is drawn like an eight year old and has the mentality to match. His clothing isn't the only thing that makes up his design...

Platoon in the casino is easily the best way to make quick cash. I made well over 700,000 gilders just from the winnings of one lucky six game streak (so an initial stake of only 200 casino coins). You have to buy items with the casino coins and then sell them to vendors for gilders but it's well worth the effort of both learning Platoon and selling the booty.

What's the best item to buy from the casino in order to sell back to someone?

The post I was replying to couldn't have simply been talking about combat only, because "tip of the iceberg" implies a multitude of issues. And there really aren't that many combat problems aside from a few minor annoyances and the huge AI problem.

They provided you with a list of combat issues and the discussion was talking about combat only. They weren't really talking about the game in general.

When you're talking 'design', usually that involves hair/eye color/clothing. He seems 13 to me. He's not as tall as Phil but when compared to the other adults in the game who are also kind of Ghiblisquished, he just seems slightly small for his age. (I mean really, it's not that unbelievable) I find he has a lot of growth throughout the game which may be why he sort of started out so slow and prone to Drippy cursing him out, lol.

I was editing my post while you ninja replied. :(
Oliver isn't just slightly shorter than Phil. Have him stand next to a fire hydrant or some random woman for that matter. Most women TOWER over him.

And sorry, but character design is not simply the way a character looks. Characterization is a part of character design.

Wait, so if the rate is 5%, it won't go to 25% but rather 6%? Yea, that'll do fuck-all when it comes to Tokos. Great...

Yes, something like that. It's even more insane with Tokotokos and the other forms.

Toko 2%
Toko Golden 2%
Tokotocold 1%
Tokotocold Golden 1%
Tokotoko 1.6%
Tokotoko Golden 1.6%

Okay, but when most people refer to character design, it's not really in that sense.

And so what? I know guys who are short. What do you want from him? He's not going to be as tall as a grown woman... he's 13!

This game is beautiful. I just got to the forest.

It gets more beautiful when you start getting to towns and other modes of transportation. I love the attention to detail in this game.

I wish they did more installments of Hotroit Stories. It looked pretty interesting. After the first part was released in 2010, they just stopped making new ones. :(

The 'Medal of Agility'. They cost 5000 casino coins each and sell for ~2000 gilders to a vendor. 99 (the max you can carry) nets you nearly 250,000 gilders.

You can also triple what you pay in coins, and triple what you get back (6000 guilders) and get the great sage's secret (total of 594,000 guilders per 99 (1,485,000 coins)). Or spend 2500 coins, get back 1500 guilders per sprite dew (total of 148,500 guilders per 99 (247,500 coins)).

Ugh I went the whole game without freezes and now in post game it froze 3 times already. Shit's getting annoying and I don't want to have to save every 2 minutes.

Beat it! What an amazing game. Loved the ending and stuff leading up to it, even if it was pretty damn cliche.

2013 is off to a fantastic start. Now onto the post game!

Very good. They are fast, powerful, and their stats are all fairly even across the board. Definitely recommended.

There really needs to be a disclaimer when the Naja is recommended. You really need some other tanky (Yoo-Hoo) familiar out on the field to actually use the Naja prior to it's third form. It has a very good attack and attack speed, but it takes damage like a wet paper bag until very late into the game. It might even be smart to feed it a bunch of defense food as well since that's it's largest weakness. I wouldn't consider having 225 attack with 90 defense as "fairly even" either. It's worth grabbing, but it will mostly be an experience dump until you're close to finishing the game.

And so what? I know guys who are short. What do you want from him? He's not going to be as tall as a grown woman... he's 13!

The average height for a 13 year old boy is 5'2. The average height of most women is 5'3.

Does this game even use standard heights? I mean, this IS a game based in fantasy where you talk to animals and dead people... among other things.

Edit: Also, Mite has lower defense numbers than Naja across all forms... I mean, it's all up to what you want to do, really. Obviously, the higher leveled the familiar, the better its skills.

I get that, but even in it's skewed dimensions it should remain consistent with itself. Esther is practically a giant compared to Oliver, and she's what, 16? That little kid that's running around Al-Mamoon looks like he's 5-7 and he's not that much smaller than Oliver.
