The only timing based thing you want to look for is when to defend. Any time the enemy is casting a spell you want to cancel out of whatever you're doing and pick the defense option. That's how you get gold glims. And only use Oliver to cast spells or use items. What else? If you find yourself in the middle of the battle, taking the brunt of the damage, you probably want to switch back to Oliver(from the familiar) quickly to just get out of there. There's a good chance he's somewhere else on the map. If you've got a slow and ponderous pokemon, pick the enemy closest to you to attack, because the AI is clumsy and you won't have direct control once you pick attack.
That's about it early on, assuming you're still without party members. Oh, you're also going to notice the points for when you inflict damage are different colors. Blue means you're at a disadvantage, orange means you're dealing extra damage. It's not enough to make me switch pokemon, but obviously you want to attack the enemy that you're better against first.
