Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch |OT|

I've just got up to the bit where I can enter the
Casino, and I quickly won a couple of million chips on Platoon. I've bought everything from the prize exchange and bought enough medals to sell on to get the trophy for accumulating 500,000 Guilders. Is there anything worthwhile I can do with this money? Should I be buying everything for the sake of completion later on? Or is there something specific I should be concentrating on. Thanks!

You generally only need money for equipment and alchemy materials.

Some ending/post-game quests are just stupid. That Master Alchemist one... I think I enjoyed getting my Disgaea 3 platinum trophy more than I'm enjoying this.

Wonderful game, sucky post-game stuff. But at least it has some detailed stuff about the world and the story on those quests.

I am having an issue that is preventing me from enjoying the game fully and I figured you might have an idea what is wrong with my ps3:

It started a few months ago when I got Resident Evil 6 day one. Very strange lines would appear all over the place. It was so intense that I stopped playing the game after like an hour, totally failed to suspend my disbelief. Then I dealt with my Yakuza ( Yakuza 4 and dead souls) backlog and the same issue happened. I took a pic of the kind of issue I had. It would be as if the model had some sort of strange bug that made a line appear out of nowhere and stuck to it.

RE was the same thing as well, worse, on top of some weird shadows.

I endured it as it wasn't constant in Yakuza and would only go bad from time to time. But now on ni no Kuni, a new issue popped its ugly head and I now have to deal with very annoying flickering. I endured it for a while but the whole point of the game is to get immersed in its poetic environment and it`s quite challenging to do so with that kind of flickering. ( That green thingy on the right is a pretty good example)

So what`s wrong with my ps3 ? Is it dying or is it randomly developing an anti japanese developed game allergy? I played some other games in the meantime but none showcased those bugs.

I'm afraid my ps3 ( bought that 80 gb mgs 4 bundle day one) is simply getting old.

I'm sorry to say it, but pretty sure your PS3 is dying. Had those problems with polygons being stretched all over just before mine died and I remember seeing other people with the exact same.

I'll point you here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=150137&highlight=my+ps3+died

Back up your saves and stay safe, my friend.

Thanks for the link. I'll repost there. It's quite annoying that it's happening now as I was actually about to buy a 3ds for fire emblem and am not willing to buy a new ps3 now that the ps4 is gonna be announced in a week :(

As for backing up the saves, I just bought ps + a few weeks ago so it has been uploading my recent saves pretty diligently. Pretty sure that it hasn't uploaded the old ones though but well I guess that doesn't really matter anymore :(

I can't believe this. I've fought so many Tokos trying to catch one that I'm insanely over-leveled and nothing in this game will ever pose a challenge for me ever again and yet I still can't get one. Then I go and fight Tokotokos near Perdida to quickly level up familiars for the familiar gathering quest there, and on my second fight with one I catch it. This shit's crazy man.

Same here, but. I still can't catch one.

And then here I am hunting for the other starters and I tame the third toko I come across.

Don't worry guys the game's RNG has screwed me over in other areas.

Okay, I must have missed something because I'm suddenly lost plot-wise...

I'm in hamelin and I just went and grabbed the two princes. Why are they talking about time travel and returning to their own time all of a sudden? Haha. What the flippin heck did I miss,

Your party got thrown threw time to the past while you were in the castle. It was when a large room got foggy and these guards showed up.

I'm 20 hours or so in the game now and i have to say this games plot is awful. There is never a time Level 5 doesn't decide to throw the narrative off it's path for task after boring task. 20 hours in and almost everything i do is common. There is a White Witch that has been shown in the game for approximately 10 minutes in cut scenes, all i know about her is that she likes to wear a mask, cape, and laugh a lot. Everytime there is a plot advancement, Level 5 makes sure to make you do some fetching so you never feel like progress is being made.

Do you remember the part with the mist? Right before you got surrounded and talked to the emperor? That was you being sent back in time 10-20 years. Everyone should have been confused and talking about time travel since then. Maybe you skipped too fast through the cut scenes?

Haha! What! That's what that was?
Did they elaborate on that and I missed the dialogue? — OH WAIT. Okay. I get it. I was drawing the wroooong conclusions, haha. Thanks.

Does anyone else think the party AI is extremely annoying? Like I want Swain to keep his familiar out to fight and he just switches to use his gun! Its infuriating because he does this while he has full hp/mp and barely contributes to the fight.

Please if I am doing something wrong inform me! :(

I turned it on easy and it alleviated 75% of my anger. Also the Ray of Life spell that the evolved lemur and duck get help a lot too. Seeing Esther melee creatures for 1 dmg is not reassuring that my party wants to save the world.

Strangely the AI never truly bothers me except for few instances. I really appreciate Esther keep casting healing on me because most of the time I'm too busy defeating the enemies to remember to heal myself.

Also, how many rounds of straight Platoon games have you guys played? I can only do 6-7 rounds at a time. More than that, I'm afraid I'll lose all of the money.

Seems to be whatever familiar I give them they just switch to themselves (which is really annoying in the
Shaadar fight
I am currently on)

It's a decent alternative to a Bonehead for Swaine. A little slower, though, and you don't have access to them until much later in the game.

I just got one. Already have a Bone Baron. I just wanted something tough, almost as tough as my Dino.

Lol, I just played that part as well and got a bit confused as well. The writing there could have been done better.

The dealer will end the game if you win 7 rounds in a row. TBH you really only need to win 2-3 7round games to be set on cash for the game (at least until post game, idk if I need more chips then). Winning 3 full games netted me ~1.5mil chips and buying sage secrets and selling them for 6k at a time was more than enough money. Was so happy to finally have money to splurge of MP items

Aah, that explains why I got booted out of the game that one time I won 7 rounds. I thought it was weird that the game ended suddenly without my prompt.

Waiiit. Tell me more. How does this work? So you have your 1.5 mill chips and you exchanged it with Sage Secrets? And then you sell that item to whom? Those people in the market?

Just beat the game, my thoughts:

Fun story, but the combat is maddening. Especially the last boss. I beat the game at around level 53 with the same familiars I got at the start, except for a Puss in Bouts I leveled up along the way. The last fight was a little rough, but it basically came down to a lot of provisions and kiting. All in all, a pretty good game, but nothing mind blowing. I saw some people that grinded all the way up to 80 and they were still having issues with the end? I am wondering what the problem was, since I treated it like pretty much every other boss fight in the game.

How do you do that? Can you increase the bet some way?

What's the easiest way to get crystals? I'm kind of stuck trying to get the 250 familiar trophy because I just keep running out of jumbo drops and I don't have enough crystals to keep making more

Take your chips to the cashier and redeem them for Sage Secrets (only 1 at a time :/), they go for 6k at any vendor. An alternative is selling the medals of agility but I think Sage Secrets net you more money, so less time sitting there buying em 1 at a time. I think your inventory can hold a max of 99 at a time

Uh Jumbos go for 3k chips each at the casino. Go make a ton of chips playing platoon and just buy the jumbo drops you need, tho they only show up postgame

Np, go play Platoon, its definitely the easiest game to break (AI is super predicable) and if you need help, found a great guide breaking down what the AI does in Platoon.http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps3/998014-ni-no-kuni-wrath-of-the-white-witch/faqs/65908

How do you do that? Can you increase the bet some way?

essentially you try to keep winning games especially with the pile you marked as a winner (red flag) and avoid letting the AI win with their marked pile (blue flag). Everytime you successfully win with a red flagged hand, 1/2 of what you're betting gets thrown onto of the pot (starting bet=200, winning a red flagged hand = +100 more into the pot). If the AI chooses correctly and wins with a blue flagged hand wins, the pot gets cut in half. So if you can sucessfully win 7 games in a row and pick the winning hands, the payout can break 1 mil chips (my personal best was 800k after a 7game round)

Horace's riddles would be okay if I had the physical book with me. Otherwise it's just a tedious thing to do using only the in game companion.

And recipes I discover in the book and use don't get put in the recipe list for easy access. Garbage.

I know that one of the criticisms about this game was that there's a lot of grinding, but i've actually found that to be quite a bit of fun. Mostly be cause it's really easy. The Toko's just allow you to grind without much of a threat. My party currently looks like this

Oliver (99) | Puss in Boats (99) | Mahanaja (87) | Catastroceros (27)
Esther (99) | Fluorongo (99) | Greater Naiad (99) | Nightcap (58)
Swaine (99) | Bone Baron (99) | Aye-Aye Catcher (99) | Beam-Man (53)

I'm pretty much done grinding at this point. I've got to get back to the story stuff.
I'm about head out to complete the Mornstar missions.

And so my beautiful journey comes to an end. I've done all that I'm willing with the game. A solid 60+ hours in and enjoyed every minute.

9/10, one of the best RPGs ever and contender for GOTY.

I'll miss playing it now :(

The game got 100% better when I got the
Flying mount
and found the
Toko Island to grind a few levels
. The metamorphed (?) familiars are underwhelming unfortunately. I had hoped that they would start out small and end up huge (like Digimon, back in the day).

I was hoping for more of a changed in metamorphed familiars as well. Found that quite disappointing.

GRRR. That lady @ the Platoon table can be so infuriating with her little commentary and smirk when I lose.

But I got the last laugh because the last time we face off, I won 46,500 in one go. AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Ah, thank you! I'll give that a try once I have enough money.
