I was able to get the plat at 88:50 hours. Thanks for the suggestions about not going for the harder formulas that needed the rare ingredients. Saved me some headaches. :D

So I think I'm having the opposite problem then most people...

Oliver seems to die more in boss fights then Esther or Swaine. :S

So far enjoying the game but man does Mr. Drippy say "Tidy" a lot.
Wish the actual anime footage had more frames though.

So how do you get mana in this game? There is no mana regen...

I reached a door in the dungeon, but it requires the candles to be lit, I only have 2 mana left and 4 is required to light them up... there are 3 candles in all.

You can use either Save points, try to fight more enemies hoping that they would drop some blue glimmers, or use coffee on your characters.

I presume that you're in Ding Dong Well. You can try to backtrack out and sleep at the inn.

Are you controlling Oliver in these boss fights? If so, are you using a familiar that doesn't have Defend/Evade? I ask because I found it very hard to die if you defended/evaded all of the bosses major attacks and also I'm curious if Oliver's AI is bad.

casinos are killing me. i always spend too much time in there.

Always play Platoon. Learn the rules, and first try to earn your first 5000 chips. Then for subsequent sessions, try to aim at winning all 6 rounds, most of the time that will net you more than 100000 chips.

You can roughly win a platoon game 1 out of 4 times, but since you're just betting 200, and the payout is way higher, it's worth the grind. Always stack Jokers with low cards such as Bishop (Ace ?) or 2s.

If you want gilders, exchange the chips with the medal item for 5000 chips and sell it for around 2800 gilders at shops.

I don't know, because I didn't do everything yet. Aside from getting a platinum, I kind of doubt it.

Not sure about doing everything again, but there's a small post end game story, that can be completed by taking a sub quest from a certain character. That part of the story is interesting and weird considering that Ni No Kuni is targeted at children

Yeah I control him, I just lose track of his health in boss fights. I focus too much on knowing when to defend. I then look up and realize my health is almost gone.

Just started playing this today. Charming game. Perhaps a little too light and child orientated, but I'm guessing it will get more complex and deep as it unfolds. Amazing visuals and world thus far. VA is actually really good as well which took me by surprise. Whilst Oliver is a bit typical, Drippy's Welsh persona is spot on.

I seem to be missing the tenth(?) story. I did all the errands, bounties, etc. Aside from capturing them all, I have all the post-game stuff done. I'm not sure where it is.

Damn, I just got raped twice in a row in the grotto by regular mob: turban legend guys kept going all snow storm on me and pwned me. It was actually fairly straightforward till now. What's up with the sudden difficulty jump.

What tickled me most about the AI in this game, is that, no matter the strength of the characters compared to weak enemies, they would ALWAYS try to cast a strong spell.

For instance, I'm fighting enemies in the Tombstone Trail. I switch over to Swaine to mug the gold mobs for some rare items. If I don't have Oliver on "Don't use abilites", he would immediately start to cast
Astra
. Why? Or if Esther get hit for 10 points of damage, she'd use one of her most powerful healing spells to get those points back...

Damn those Beachheads to hell...trying to do that side mission and they need to drop some gumblesomething...I think I killed 15 now and nothing,I even captured one lol...and 2 fights on the ship against the ones in the water around Skull mountain and I have to travel inside to refill,Esther and Swaine are out of mana and one of them is at 1 HP because they died... ;)

You can also get them from Major Byrdes around Skull Mountain. The good thing about targeting them instead of Beachheads like the quest suggests is that not only can you tell what you're going to fight (unlike water enemies) but you can steal gustplumes from them as well.

You might want to try changing Esther's Tactics to "Keep us Healthy". I rarely had to heal myself except when both my teammates were out of mana (and even then they'd seek out blue glims and heal me).

A good habit to get into, is when you're getting hit by a big attack and you're defending, to stare at your life bar for a couple seconds, it's too much to watch it the whole battle but since you're just sitting there it's worth a quick glance. That way you know if you need to fire off a quick heal spell after.

Best of luck!

Ah,that's good to know thanks...and I never think of using Swaine to steal...? I never switch to Swaine in combat...

So, I completed this game today, and I plan on taking my time to work my way to getting the Platinum... hopefully. This game, from the beginning to the end, was just flat out awesome. I loved the characters, the world, and the music. It all blended together so amazingly well. I haven't played much RPGs, just mainly Final Fantasy since 8, and a few other ones, but Ni no Kuni is definitely the best RPG I've played. Now, I hope getting the rest of the trophies won't be a pain. Not really looking forward to the whole Alchemy thing. I think Alchemy is the one thing I really hate about this game. Anyways, I just wanted to come in here and praise the game. I'm seriously glad I got it. I knew I would like it, but I didn't know I would like it as much as I do. Hopefully, there will be another Ni no Kuni game on a Playstation console in the future.

I'm really struggling to resist an avatar quote.

But get used to using Swaine's stealing. You'll need it for several quests and trophies.

In addition to what Sub 0 said, you get more mana when you level Oliver up.

Been slowly learning to spam all defense everytime i see a heart lol

I do too but the Draco must have got the move in before I pressed it because he still cast it :(

I still have yet to be able to heart another golden draggy since, so I banished that particular Draco out of my party and exchanged him for some weak pitiable Ruffian or some shit to shame him into obeying me

Ugh, I'm so close to this plat, but farming in this game sucks so much. I'm at 86% alchemy completion, and I really don't feel like farming for the rare stuffs...

Yeah finished the main story, now
clearing up on the extra quests and FINAL boss,
then I will make a decision on the farming of Alchemy and Familiars.

Bioware tried doing it in Dragon Age and failed miserably at it, yet NNK is even worse. The system in FFXII seems like a pretty simple list of "If, then" checks, and they work. Why don't more developers go this route instead of trying to overcomplicate it to the point of not even working (Dragon Age) or too simplistic and general (NNK)? It wouldn't even need to be as "boring" as what's in FFXII either, but that game is still a masterwork in design by comparison to the AI in the other similar games. I personally still prefer turn-based combat, simply because you are on total control of what your party is doing. Some games can do real-time okay (Xenoblade), but if a developer insists on real-time where you only control one character at a time, then they better make sure the damn AI is up to snuff.

thought i was the only one to think that nnk battle system is WAY, WAY too simplicistic for my enjoyment...

Alrighty, Esther joined. When will I get the ability to obtain new familiars, and when can I get a Dinoceros or whatever that super-powerful familiar was called again.

I've just got to the Miasma Marshes, how long have I got left?

Finally finished that sidequest 74 I think it is, one where you need 3 fully evolved familiars. I seriously hope that's the last capture familiar quest lol.

49 Familiars away from the Platinum Trophy, clocking in at over a hundred hours now, but about 30 hours of that was grinding while watching House of Cards on Netflix.

Hmm, maybe I'm doing something wrong but it seems like Esther is always out of mana and casts the most stupid of spells. What's the best thing to have her set as in the tactics menu?

I'm around 20ish hours in.
Just got the boat

You can tell her to not use any abilities at all. Other than that she will just waste her MP like it's the greatest thing ever. It's less than ideal.

Just finished
Peridia, got the Mornstar
, almost lvl 50.

Now where can I find the dino whatever familiars everyone's talking about? I saw one on the northern cliffs at the desert once, and when I finally gained access to that area, none in sight. Are they just so rare or am I just at the wrong location?
